In short, this game is a bit tragic. The combat has a lot of depth and it feels really rewarding even if you win or lose. The open world nature of the game also allows for a lot of flexibility and it really feels like you are exploring while you build out a network of farms, plantations and mines. The issue is the general instability because the devs can't make up their mind. If you like boats, I would recommend to check it out but go with caution.

I bought this game all the way back when it released on steam, even back then it had a pretty painful grind, especially for a game that wasn't free to play. The combat was amazing but the grind pushed me away and I've never come back to it. It always felt like a potentially incredible game held down by an atrocious grind and scammy devs.

I played Naval Action in 2017 and 2018 before I discovered DCS. I put in a lot of hours (it is a time consuming game) and had fun. Once I found DCS I had to give up NA because I didn't have time for both and I like planes more than ships. The combat in naval action is outstanding and exciting.

This really is the worst of the worst, though. Don't mind so bad when devs disregard much of community feed back, there's a lot of solid research that shows that consumers can often be the worst people to talk to about what consumers actually want. However, these devs are outright antagonistic to their customers, and at the same time they put together dominatingly the best ship combat "sim" in any era that I'm aware of they are absolutely awful game developers. I have to give them some credit for at least trying to be game devs though, something the likes of which DCS, Il-2, and war thunder actively avoid. Think about it, without folks like enigmas team and Finnish (and some other really great ones), we wouldn't really have "games" at all, just really flipping fancy digital toy models that "light up and sound like the real thing when you press the button!"

NA veteran here! Played from early access on. I think your video nails it on the head. The DLCs are worth dwelling on as obvious cash grabs that really make this game pay-to-win. The fact that you can print ships of just about every class daily for triple-a prices is deeply depressing.
There is some incredible developer lore here. If you want to go on a wild ride, look up Banished Privateer and the antics surrounding his one-man war against the developers.
The game is definitely at its best when you play in a clan. The grind is brutal, but manageable if you pool resources. And my fondest memories come from clan activities. Props to you for, in my view, playing the game the best way!
I would log on and give your clan all of my stuff, but I suspect my hoard was wiped.

    Hi
I played this game from early access til now, on and off. Over 2500 hours in game and that’s a very low number compared to many.
Your analysis was very spot on. I still play on occasion. It’s a love hate relationship… I’ve not played on the new server that wipes regularly. No American nation, no play.
Game was way better long ago. But even with all its flaws it is still a beautiful game to play.
BTW you need to work on that sail management!! You’ll run into a veteran someday that’ll eat your lunch. If that pirate had been a real veteran you would’ve lost most your ships in that battle… they’re some scary skilled dudes playing this game… or at least used too…
Also a fan of your DCS content!!! Great stuff!!!

Great video, and its been really fun to play this game! Hopefully this video draws some more attention to it, because I genuinely have a lot of fun playing Naval Action and it's only better with the clan we've formed. Many (seems like all) disagree with developer decisions, but finding the fun in the game despite the heavy-handed approaches to balance is not hard. Lately, with the dev putting out polls, actively developing and pushing patches frequently, I think there's a chance for significant improvements in the areas that could use it.
With a wipe approaching soon, there's no better time to start and get familiar with the game.

I played this back close to the very beginning, well before the open world was around. I think this was like 15-16 or so. At that time the community was small but tight and the game was an absolute blast. Still sim in the air with some of those virtual captains! The battles if I remember correct were up to around 60 ships with 2 teams. There was a lobby and a usualy no more than 1-5 matches to choose from. We all exitedly anticipated the open world game play, but then when it landed it was just so awful, and at the same time we completely lost those glorious battles we had all enjoyed for so many hundreds of hours. They remained for awhile in some form, but nothing like our Trafalgar-esque epics repeated every couple of hours. I wouldn't find that kind of enjoyment again until a few years later when I really started to dig into IL2, and now these days also helos in DCS. I have come back to NA a few times over the years, but that juice just is not worth the squeeze by a long shot anymore. One sad thing is the combat and mechanics are very much as they were, the principals of energy and wind/sail were the keys to success. It's hard to know the greatness of the game is still there, with all the fun hidden away. Still miss this game so very much when I see it in my stream game list. Ask me about the time I one v oned a Santissima in a snow... and sank that that turkey! (Took over an HOUR and a half, i was genuinely spent in the end). It's the pilot not the plane indeed maverick.

The grind really is abysmal. Going from fifth rates (what i was sailing in that big fight, which put me squarely in the "baby ships" category) to fourth rates is going to cost me 400xp. You get maybe 20xp per fight if you tackle somebody who actually stands a chance of sinking you, and more like 10xp if you just bully smaller boats. Even a relatively one-sided fight can extend on past ten minutes when you're talking fifth rate vs. sixth rate because you just don't have the broadside weight to sink the enemy quickly. So worst case scenario you're looking at a double digit number of hours spent grinding just to go from a small ship to a somewhat less small ship.
The grind is also brutal starting out. The ship you start with is effectively worthless, IMO- terrible piddly guns, tiny crew, paper-thin planking, and you don't even have the cargo space to do trading stuff. Once you graduate into a "proper" ship it's better, but man the new player experience is rough.

This game very much resembles Sea Dogs and Sea Dogs 2 to me. Rare and completely forgotten sailing games. They were both by a defunct Russian developer-Akella, the original makers of Postal-and they were both also highly dysfunctional games with many technical and stability problems. Nonetheless, they were ALSO a pair of very unique and original games with lots of well thought out multi-layered meta similar to to this game's. A functioning trade economy, automatic time compression for sailing, etc. Other than Naval Action literally nothing like them has emerged in over 20 years.

They would add one or two cool things but in the same release totaly spin the whole freaking table about the nature of the game in a half thought out mess. They would constantly try to tweak the game for better griefing. Our clan kept busting the number of players that could be in a clan. It was funny.

I've played the game in small doses for maybe 3 years now. Since Pirates of the Burning Sea died off I've looked for a decent age of sail sim/game. It is a very fun game in many aspects. I really fell into the rabbithole of mixing wood types when building ships for changing performance aspects. But I only play like a week or two at a time then leave for a month or two, then return too get my fix lol. I think if I found a clan I would really get into it. As a solo player, it's pretty empty and feels like a single player game.

I played NA in closed alpha/beta, then during open beta through release. I was very active in the forums at that time. I can say the downfall of this game is 100% the devs. They are utterly toxic in to the community in a way I've never seen with a game. They had a great game as a battle arena in Alpha. Battles were FANTASTIC! Amazing combat and strategy. The problems started when they decided to go Open World, and it was clear from the start that they had zero clue how to do an Open World game. They would institute a change people wouldn't like, tell the whole community how dumb and wrong we were, then change it again 3 months later. It was just relentlessly toxic, and like mentioned by Enigma, constantly changing so you couldn't get into and learn the mechanics of the game because they're constantly changing, yet the game was a MASSIVE grind.
It's really sad. I was so hyped for this game early. Best combat for an age of sail game I've ever played.

i played the hell out of this game back when it was in EA. In those days it was a world of tanks style 10v10(or was it more?) MMO. Not that that was their dev goal, it was just a way of play testing ships and mechanics. I can confirm the devs for this game are HORRIBLE. The development was extremely slow as well because they spent like a year alone just changing game engines. I stopped playing when it went open world, then got back in like a year later to find basically the same game. The combat and ship modeling is really good, its just the direction the game has taken as an MMO is not what we all wanted. Not to mention it's taken way to long.

When you buy a DLC ship, you can redeem it for use immediately. However, YOU MUST have enough XP to have enough crew to use it. And DLC ships are NON REFUNDABLE. So if you buy one, find out how long it will take to rank up to use it and decide nah, you can't refund the ship. This is the summy part of ship DLC and new players.
You used to be able to undercrew ships, so it was possible to use larger ships early, but they removed that, and now you must have full crew to use. Another part of the devs forcing players to play how the devs want.

I really enjoyed this game back in the day but the time sink was too much. The video mentioned the grind but also some of the flaws were not probably expounded upon well enough in the video.
It’s not a game where you can chose to play a twenty minute instance like warthunder or WoS and its over after 20 minutes. You have to enter the open world look for a fight and come back to port before you log and can often get pulled into battles against your will. It essentially can make logging OFF a chore at times.
Essentially, Players can tag your ship which pulls you into an instance. While you can run away in the instance, often his buddy is waiting outside to tag you all over again which prevents players from leaving a lopsided battle by chain tagging other players. There are often many tools for veteran players that are used to keep you locked down in the instance and unable to leave. The community in general loves to gank players.
Because many of these ships represent hours upon hours of investment you stand to lose it all if they keep capture or sink your ship.
Its a huge cat and mouse game to tag while you have the advantage and avoid being tagged while your weaker. You usually get tagged when you don’t want to like when returning to port or full of loot from clan activities and need to log for the day. And some dude just is camping outside your port, tags your ship, and pulls you into an instance on your way back to port. If you got RL obligations they have to wait, each time you get tagged could last up to 1-2 hours.
It was the inability to put the game down when I wanted to night after night that made me walk away. Still dabble on the PvE server at times but I can’t commit the kind of time it takes to excel at this game. It’s a shame because the combat is excellent.

Good review. The golden age of this game has been and gone. The combat mechanics and tactical depth were once a thing of beauty and it had the potential to become a genuine classic in computer gaming. Two patches in the last 2 years have radically altered the combat. It's now a joyless parody of what it once was. Such a shame and so easy to fix. The lead developer (as well as being unstable and prone to crazy rants) has done what he thought would best maximise profit but in the process sucked out everything that made it great. If the new owners can get rid of him, perhaps it could be resurrected.

You know what is misrepresented? Real history. Is there anything more cliché than naming the Spanish Armada as a notable moment? In reality, it was defeated by the elements, as Felipe II stated at that time, due to an actual storm. However, it seems that everyone prefers to say that the British defeated it. Probably, if that hadn't happened, Jacob II would have become the new king of England. Why not highlight other notable events? For example, the attempt of the British crown to conquer Lisbon and crown Antonio de Crato as the King of Portugal (at that time, Portugal was part of the Spanish Empire). Antonio de Crato offered the British crown numerous possessions and gold. They created a "Contra-Armada," which was humiliated by the Spanish. However, due to British, especially Anglican, manipulation of history, we often only hear the cliché description of this era. They can make movies about their few victories while ignoring countless other defeats. We could make thousands of movies about how "El Glorioso" humilliated 12 British ships while they were trying to capture it or the popular siege of Cartagena de Indias, where Blas de Lezo humiliated Vernon. Anyway, I recommend reading about these events. You will be pleasantly surprised and learn more about history beyond the "glorious victories of the British everywhere. Had to comment on this because I see it all the times and is very boring and tiring, rest of the video was good 👍 (except for the ganking againts 1 ship as a big group, no honor on that, you should play British and roleplay as Drake)

    • @Enigma89
      @Enigma89  ปีที่แล้ว

They were examples used to highlight a very famous period. Whether it is true or not is not relevant as they are commonly believed and pointed to as big moments of that period. The point of bringing it up was to contrast it with WWII which gets a lot of love in games but the Age of Sail does not.
