  • On September 26, 2023, I was bitten on the hand by a western diamondback rattlesnake. It was one of the scariest things that ever happened to me, and definitely the most painful. This is my story detailing exactly what the experience was like, as well as some footage from the hospital.

My mother taught me to carry a long switch on desert hikes and sweep the area in front of me. Amazing how many dive away from the hiking path.
She also successfully removed a timber rattler from my twin brother’s sleeping bag while he slept. What a woman she was.

I heard the rattler and she took large rocks and placed on the bag, sectioning off the snake from my brother (we about seven I think.). She then smashed a rock down on the snake, but it shot toward the bag opening and she grabbed it. I was impressed.

Thanking for sharing your experience. I was bitten in 1979 by a rattler also. I was bitten on the ankle. Your description is spot on. It’s been about 40 years and as far as I know I have no effects from the bite. It did take years for my body to get back to normal. Toes were numb for about 7 years. The pain is a distant memory now.

My Father was fishing at night with waders on when I was a small child. A water moccasin got in his waders and bit him over and over again before he could get it out. He was able to make it home before they were able to get him to the hospital. He was hospitalized for quite a while and when he was able to go back to work he had to go and have it debrided daily from the venom killing the tissue. He had a huge scar on his back and he developed Shingles on the scar tissue when he was in his 70's. I hope you are able to have a speedy recovery and glad you were able to get to medical care as soon as possible.

Correction: I said I was given 10 cc and 50 cc of fentanyl. In reality it was probably a microgram dosage watered down with saline. 10 cc of pure fentanyl would have killed me. A former nurse just brought that to my attention.

Fentanyl is measured and dosed in micrograms or mcg. So if you think you got 10 cc it was 1mcg 50 cc=5mcg. I'm a nurse and have treated patients with rattlesnake bites and brown recluse spider bite, the snake bite was worse but the spider bite possibly because we didn't know what caused the bite, took longer to heal.

I just watched a documentary on snakebites over in Africa and India and it’s unbelievable what they have to go through to get to a hospital and the shortage of antivenom due to the expense. I live in SC and some good friends up the road from me had a rattler bite their Corgi dog and she died instantly. My husband has a friend who was recently bitten on his hand by a Copperhead. The antivenom was $8,000 a vial. He was in ICU for two days and has made a good recovery. You explain your experience very well and wish you well with your recovery.

if you play with venomous snakes, you need to have around 100K in disposable cash in case you get bitten. the medical industrial complex charges that much for a snake bite. they know they can get away with charging any amount when you are incapacitated. they bankrupt you and don't care if you lose your house.

I am so happy you are doing so well and healing. I am a North Dakota girl and remember back in my school years going out to some of the buttes near my home on motorcycles with my boyfriend and his friends. We would search for rattlesnake dens to catch the baby snakes to use in paperweights or pen holders. Never bitten. A few yrs later, one is those friends, about 21 y o, caught adult rattlesnakes and threw them in his dirt basement. One day, trying to get the rattlesnake out of his hay baler, he was bitten. He started for town (and hospital) and just made it. He went into cardiac arrest when he entered ER. I can’t remember how many doses of antivenin he received but I do remember he coded 5 times in 24 hrs and there was discussion re: amputation of his arm. He was discharged 2 weeks later, with both arms. His attraction to snakes ended that year. Just another interesting real story of the danger of getting up close and personal with snakes.

I am glad you survived and are getting better. I live 15kms from where they make the rattle snake anti venom. 2mths ago a friend of mine was driving me home from a bat meeting and he said casually that's where my daughter works. I asked what's out there because I thought Risdondale was where you got road quarry rubble. He answered that she is Biochemist that works on Rattle snake anti venom. He then told me a little into how it's processed and how they do this. It has international input as part of the process the initial produce is preprocessed sent to England for processing and sent back here to South Australia for more processing and testing before releasing the product.
Australia has the deadliest snakes in the world. The black fierce snake (no anti venom available) the and eastern king brown. On my property I have Eastern king brown and the red bellied black. The eastern king is slightly different to the one in the eastern states of Australia but just as deadly. The venom is very toxic but it has a saving grace it's fangs are not very long and it gives lower amount of venom. However the big thing is, it's always better never to be bitten at all. It's ironic that we have deadliest snakes and we make snake anti venom for a snake that doesn't even exist here. It's an astonishing fact about life it always has surprises.

I’m Australian and the world makes fun of us with some of our dangerous wild animals. I grew up in the country and only met one snake, a dangerous red belly black who reared up at me like a cobra when I was 11 and had taken a short cut home across the creek. He didn’t react to me until I had passed him, and so it was more a defensive act to scare me off. And bloody heck, it worked. I forgot every single thing that we are taught here about backing away slowly while watching the snake. I was actually frozen in terror, especially by the rearing up at me which I wasn’t aware that they did. He could have struck when I was very close but didn’t. I ended up running like the devil was after me, and I only had thongs on my feet (flip flops to you). My mum nearly had a heart attack and checked me all over but no bite and I knew that he hadn’t struck at me. Apparently he was protecting the eggs so his reaction was quite normal and he wasn’t being overly aggressive, just letting me know he was there. I have never known anyone who has ever been bitten by a snake, which just shows that they mainly avoid us and don’t chase us down, and the country is not crawling with snakes as so many silly people believe. I’d be more terrified of a brown bear or a mountain lion than anything here, we have nothing that can attack you like that apart from a saltie and we all know not to swim near those or sharks. Am glad you’re nearly healed and that your doggy is ok.

I’m an Aussie and I have seen Tiger Snakes (venomous) in a suburb of a large city I was walking my dog and luckily I still had her on the lead as she wanted it, I pulled her back and stood still until the snake backed off and went into some rocks. 20 minutes later I’m walking back that way and two little kids were playing on the rocks, I told their Mum that I had seen a tiger snake head in there, and she got her kids out quickly. I saw Tiger snakes and Eastern browns as a kid camping, but my Dad always told us to stay calm, and if you can move slowly backwards,or if you’re too close stand very still, one swam by us in the river one day, never seen so many kids bolt out of the water so quickly. I live inter bush now and I only saw 2 Eastern Browns at my place this snake season, but both were too close to my house, one on a track my dog and I use a few times a day, and it went under some iron, I put my dog inside, and then I jumped up and down on that tin for 20 minutes and then did it with my trusty long handled shovel just in case, as they’re protected wildlife, I jumped on that tin every day for 5 days, so I didn’t see it again, it moved to a much quieter neighbourhood. The other one was going down a rabbit burrow to get away from me, so I threw a few small sticks at it, and I didn’t see it again, it was a big fella. Eastern brown’s are the 2nd deadliest snake in the world, but they kill more people than any other snake in Australia, and only the black mamba in Africa is the deadliest, but they aren’t very aggressive so much less strikes. My main worry is my dog as he wouldn’t make it the 20kms to the vet, but if I got bitten I would have time to drive the 45 mins to the hospital, it wouldn’t be much fun, but it takes a few hours on average before it would really kick in, but it just depends on your body’s reaction and how much venom they strike you with.

I live south of Tucson and during the warm and hot months, the rattlers are active. Every time I open any door to go outside I check the ground. There’s never been one close to the house but people spot them here and there. I had my dog snake trained to avoid these SOBs. And a follow up refresher a year later. When she saw and smelled the rattler during the review session, she was so scared she actually peed running away from it. Nevertheless, nothing is a guarantee. If it weren’t for the fact the cost of living here is affordable, between the constant threat of getting bit by a rattler just walking outside and the insane heat in summer, we would move. Some people say, they were here first! If someone spots one outdoors, the fire department comes and gets it quickly. We’ve “snake proofed” the back as much as possible but if we ever have one in the backyard, my husband won’t hesitate to kill the damned thing. So happy you are recovering! Thank you for describing your ordeal in such detail. Incidentally, what did all this cost you and could it be covered by health insurance? Hope you are back to health and strength very soon. 😎

I stopped dead and carefully looked back over my shoulder and spotted it about 2 feet off to my right. I slowly worked my hands down the line to my left and took a tight hold of the line and in one quick move I jumped up and pulled on the line which bought me a fair distance to safety. I got out of there and into the house. I never needed a shot of tequila like I did at that moment. I am so sorry that you had to go through that. Goodness! I dont know how this video ended up in my feed, but I clicked on it and listened to it while doing some things around the house.
I am glad that you are still here to tell your story, and I pray for your continued healing.
I can't remember all the details anymore, but back before cell phones were a thing in my area (early 1990s) a good friend of mine was bit by 3 baby or not fully grown rattle snakes. He had been outside walking. I forget what he was doing, but he stepped on either a small pile of boards or rocks that the young snakes had apparently been hiding under.
He had gym shoes & thin socks on.
They bit his ankle and shin. He had not walked very far from his car yet, so he went back to it and drove to the nearest either house or business to call for help. It began taking effect rather quickly, making any further driving unsafe so he did not drive himself all the way back into town where the hospital was.
He was in the hospital for weeks (close to 3 weeks, I think).
He was so very, very sick in various different ways. Nauseous, vomiting, extreme pain, and other very unpleasant symptoms. Walking was torture for a while. It laid him up for many weeks.
Thankfully, he made a full recovery.
There are rattle snakes up here in nothern Indiana, where he was bit, but it is rare to see one which means that our walls of awareness in regards to the wildlife in our surroundings is limited. We dont have bear, big cats ( just bob cats & lynx but they are rare to see. Even more rare is the mountain lion. One might get spotted about every 10 years or so by hunters or forragers). We dont have a big scare over Venomous spiders/bugs etc either, although the brown recluse spiders do exist as well as other nasty little bug like critters but it is rare. So, we are rather fortunate here in those regards.
I am 52 and have been an outdoors person most of my life. I have lived out in the country for most of my life too. We forraged for wild fruits & greens, medicinal herbs, camped outside laying on the ground with no tent etc and I have never come upon a rattle snake and either has most of the other nature people & forragers that I know of around here but a few have. I only explained all of that to show how rare it is to see a rattle snake here. They do exist here though, but thankfully not in large numbers. So when my friend was bitten by not 1 but 3 of them at once it was a real shocker.
The local small town hospital wasn't equipped to handle that. If I remember correctly they took him via EMS to one of the big city hospitals even though it was a longer drive.
Because of there not being much of a threat with venomous snakes up here we dont need to wear boots or any kind of protective wear on the lower legs when out forraging, although I am starting to think that wearing protection would be a good idea when out in the tall grass & weeds forraging.
My dog(s) have almost always been with me when I am forraging so perhaps that could also be why I have only very rarely come upon any near by snakes because the dogs are stampeding around ahead of me and around me which might scare any snake(s) away. I have saw a few Garter snakes here and there and some blue racers and what might have been an aggressive water moccasin (I'm not sure if it was a moccasin) that was in the creek that was on our land. The dogs and us would splash around in the creek sometimes.
Our free ranging poultry, mostly chickens, would slurp the young small skinny, garter snakes up like a spaghetti strand 😅 🪱 🐍🍝 🐓
So between having barn cats, dogs and free ranging chickens on our land we rarely ever saw a snake.
Thank you for telling your story. Hopefully, more people will listen and learn to be more cautious. I know I will be. 🙂

Scarey story! Glad you're recovering and gradually regaining use of your hand. I'm in FL and had a friend bitten on the hand by a coral snake that he actually picked up to move off a paved parking lot area into some grass. He thought it was a harmless kingsnake. Once he got half a mile down the road, he was suddenly hit with a wave of nausea, dizziness, and chills/sweating, and sped to the ER just blocks away. He was in the hospital for three weeks, very nearly died, and then came close to losing his hand. After going home, he continued having bouts of dizziness, cramping and shaking for weeks as the effects of the antivenin continued, and the neuro damage took even longer to heal. Venomous snakes are no joke! You should clear the rocks away from your porch area bc they will retain daytime heat and attract snakes at night as the temperature drops, as yoyr experience clearly shows. Since moving here I've learned: know how to identify a venomous snake, know snake habitat & be aware of what's around you, and never put your hands where you can't see them. You're very lucky they acted fast to transport you because that was clearly a nasty bite! Get well soon & stay safe.

I’m so glad you’re recovering. I’ve seen the aftermath of a bite on a human, a horse, and a cat. It was all gory. The man’s arm was the size of a huge thigh, oozing, with the skin split open two weeks after the bite. He almost lost the arm. The horse’s back leg was the size of an elephant’s, oozing also with split skin. The cat didn’t stand a chance. I give rattlesnakes a wide berth, but they aren’t always easy to spot before you’re right on them. (North Central New Mexico where we have plenty of rattlesnakes.)

But they were not venomous. They could not even worry about them. Many times they would find many King Snakes and Gopher snakes. But with no fear. Most of the time we would find a cool place and let the hounds chase Jack Rabbits. Neither my dogs and myself would never kill anything and they never catch anything. Even my greyhound could not keep up with the bunnies. I have never seen anything like it as far as dogs go. Autumn was a total speedster. Beauty. Just plain beautiful. What speed. After being revived from a clinical death, in 1989, I recommended to the AMA, that snake bites, burns, cardiopulmonary arrests, gangrene, etc. would be helped with hyperbaric chamber.
My experience was in 1989. It took a few years to find a ND with a chamber. I still go in the chamber, occasionally. It really helps. You are very blessed.

Wow, very interesting story. I'm glad you're okay. I like snakes about as much as I like spiders. When I was 16 my brother, sister, mom and dad went to the Columbia River. We were checking out an abandoned farm house. I was walking in tall grass and heard a rattler. I stopped and looked around. It was probably 6' away. I yelled and my dad and brother ran over and dispatched it. I looked the other way, but the shotgun was very loud. Then when i was walking with my son's in a field about 10 baby snakes crossed the path in front of us. We stayed clear and never saw or heard from a mom. Got out of there quickly. It was a big lot across from our apartment and mostly used by motorcycle riders.

Thanks for this post, people need to realize that these snakes are there, and precautions should just be a normal part of life in snake country. Even so, accidents happen, not because snakes are evil, but because they are trying to live their lives too. I live near the Gulf Coast of Texas, amongst the smaller bayous, in a typical subdivision home. I’ve had rabbits, turtles, an armadillo, garter snakes, mud snakes, couple of moccasins, and yellow bellied water snakes in my backyard. Add copperheads in my neighbors yard. Not all the time, but I’m very aware when I’m working in my garden that they could be there. A stout stick through the plants before I work there. It’s better since a retention pond was put in a short way away from us, the water critters stay over there, as the food source, toads, frogs, small fish, are there too.
Glad you’re doing better, the desert is a beautiful place, for those who know it well!

Adam - 1st time viewer, as AI'd into your site by The Tube! Glad that happened, as most interesting snakebite video I've ever seen!! In '47 Mich, Gramps Henry Ford's 1st Apprentice was out crow huntin' & decided to save a shotgun shell, by hand capture of big Massauga Rattler. It had went down hole along 2-track which turned out to be huge cow track w/snake coiled around inside of leaf filled track. Gramps set up, unseen head was where he was gonna grab it, so snake hit him thrice, w/last bite locking snake's fangs into web of hand. Gramps scarred s---less, shook his hand all around to make sure he had all the venom, then Dad administered 12 GA cure to snake. Both boys butched up by WW2, not thinkin' too pretty straight yet, so both walked to farmhouse for Granny & her car. When got to bite sight, Gramps gone as had needed same-day service! No Gramps, so Granny drove for his dog, & upon return, Ole Brownie made one circle of bite site, & made dog-line for middle of winter wheat field, & there was Gramps collapsed by golly!! Who'd a thunk!! At U of M Hospital, after 2 months & 54 vials of anti-venom, Gramps went home to recover...somewhat. Poison had picked on various body parts, minor flesh attacked falling off etc, but pisser was lost his right eye! After Gramps had went thru school of hard knocks, you woulda thought he had learned some type of lessen, but when I was 6 in '56, we went to County Fair 1st day!! Gramps broke as usual, but headed for snake handler tent. His Barker was out shillin' up excitement w/biggest pair of Diamondbacks I had ever seen! He'd key those suckers up with his cane rakin' their cage, so the venom was just a flyin'! There was a $100 bill between snakes, so Barker asked if anyone needed a hundred dollars? Danged if Gramps didn't speak right up with, "I'll take your money Sonny"!! Handler opened cage, Gramps dispatched both snakes, & took their $100!! Barker won, as County Press Photographer got his shots, zipped to Paper processing film & half of Paper's front page next day was, "Local Farmer challenges Snake Wrangler at County Fair" with 12 photos to back it up!! Fair next day was standing room only!! So Adam, you & Gramps pretty much free spirits, with only major difference was when walkin' along like makin' your videos, he would surely keep an eye on where he was walkin', whereas you don't seem to care! You have heard of the old phrase, "Once bittin', twice shy"...right?? Be careful out there, and thanks again for video!!

Oh, by the way, have you heard the one where 12-year-old Grandson, also not sharpest pencil in box, got licked twice on end of beak by Rattler's fork-ed tongue at Boy Scout Camp? Rumor has it, he was picking up missed clay targets, carryin' 'em along arm when merchant of death sound rattled in otherwise vacant crane-e-um. He had varied into large outflowing bush, w/almost vacant built-up center. Occupant/Owner was this huge Rattler, took exception to intruder, rattled, tasted him twice, no danger from blockhead, so settled down back to his sunbathing. Loser put 'er in barely moving "R", & backed away, or else I couldn't have told ya about this!! Only saving grace was, when Scoutmaster checked out snake, he had 16 rattles, said snake was use to Scouts, and probably saving his venom for nice juicy lunchtime rat! I grew up in a small country town in NSW Australia and as kids we just never wore shoes! We always played outside especially hide and seek with our beautiful dog lady. One night in summer I was 10, and started to feel horrible dizzy nauseous and so hot I felt I was burning. I started to shake (febrile convulsions) we lived in the police station and the ambulance station was just at the end of our street so dad picked me up and ran me up to the ambulance knowing something was very wrong. They quickly got fluids up and started to try and cool me down while rushing me to the next towns hospital. I didn’t know what was going on and just felt like I was almost suspended couldn’t do anything. The team checked me over from top to toe and a very keen eye young nurse found a little bit of blood on the inner side of my right foot. Then the questions started being asked were I was was I wearing shoes etc. dad called mum got her to go out and have a look carefully under the light on the cement at the back of the station where we were playing, and there was a half dead rather large red back spider. So I spent a week in hospital under pain relief and that was the end of my shoe less days.
