I recently visited California, which was gorgeous by the way, a vlogged my tour around the famous ALCATRAZ PRISON. As a doctor in forensic psychiatry, this was a fascinating insight into the prison blocks, the morgue, the gorgeous gardens and beautiful views and some reflections on how it compares to modern day practice and prisons in the UK.

This was so cool. Unfortunately, prisons in the US are still very much like this. Solitary confinement is specifically designed to be torture. They intentionally make it have either no lighting (like Alcatraz) or have artificial lighting that can't turn off. The prison systems here do very little for rehabilitation. They're too profitable, so the corporations who own them (and the politicians who receive millions of dollars in support from said corporations) are incentivized to keep prison populations as large as possible. It's part of the reason why re-offending rates are so high. Our laws certainly don't help. It's incredibly hard to receive medical care and get housing here. It's not uncommon for people experiencing homelessness and medical issues to commit crimes and get caught on purpose, because it's a way they'll get consistent housing and at least a modicum of health care. Not to mention our drug laws do nothing to help people with substance use disorder. Addicts have the same access to drugs while in prison, so they continue using during their imprisonment, and upon release. Jessica Kent does some really great content around this topic. Last Week Tonight also has a few incredibly enlightening segments on these issues. Both are available on TH-cam if you're interested in learning more.

This video really makes it clear how much you love teaching. It was nice with a change of scenery, you should take us on field trips more often. 😄

I love that you're explaining the horrors of different locations of the prison, but the transition music sounds like its from an upbeat travel/tiny house tour show lol

Ah... short adding to the alcatraz history: It was also once taken over by a Natives group called "AIM", of course after alcatraz was abandoned by everyone. It was protesting on a whole other level, or so I read about it in Tanya Talaga's and Thomas King's books.

I was about to comment this! It also fits into the theme of rehabilitation on Alcatraz as AIM set up schools, had radio, medical. Really fascinating and radical protest.

I hope you have (or had) a chance to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Also, from the same area you got the boat to Alcatraz, you can take one to Angel Island. Wonderful hiking and views of the Bay, and the remains of a WWII POW camp.

Oh no Doc. In the US it is not about rehabilitation, it’s all about punishment and “client retention”…

Sup Elliott. I just wanted to say I enjoy your videos very much (when I don't often enjoy much of the videos in this niche). Although the clinic comes first & we want you to keep striving for the max competence possible, on your free time please do not ever stop making this. You're great! I love the reacting series specially hahaha

The thing that has always worried me about when medicine gets involved with the justice system is the possibility of the pathologisation and criminalisation of difference. I'd love to hear more about that.

Good question. The big issue I commonly encounter is the way the legal system sees addiction and substance use as choice and behaviour rather than an illness

SF seagulls are not to be underestimated. A seagull once stole my friend's hot dog at the SF Zoo. It swooped down and hit the back of her head with its feet. While she was dazed, it ate the hot dog out of her hand.

Hello, Dr. Carthy! Big fan. Love this video and the rest. Have binged your REACTS videos. Would you consider doing the Malcolm In The Middle episode “Hal Grieves” ? (season 7 episode 14)
An incredibly popular show and that episode is definitely packed with ripe commentary from you. An episode that touched me a lot. Regardless, love your channel and am always happy to see you upload

Interesting comparison between the historic roles of Prisons and Psychiatric Asylums (and, of course, there has/is considerable overlap in those who were kept in such places); with the shift to Community Care/Rehabilitation I am reminded of the expression "there's no such thing as a free lunch" as you only have to walk the streets of central San Francisco (or most any comparable city) to find examples of how the problem as simply been shifted rather than effectively addressed.

You really should take a look at Moon Knight. Overall the show is just typical Marvel stuff, but it builds towards the fifth episode 'Asylum', which is a heavy gut punch, looots to talk about :D

Not repair pass mistakes -- upgrade images; the goal in the United State is still not about rehabilitation; you should visit an equivalent prisons which are state-run; and private prisons.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I heard somewhere that Alcatraz had a psychiatric wing in it for inmates who were mentally ill. Would that make it both a penitentiary AND an insane asylum?
