- Horror-meister John Carpenter (Halloween, Escape from New York) teams Kurt Russell’s outstanding performance with incredible visuals to build this chilling version of the classic The Thing. In the winter of 1982, a twelve-man research team at a remote Antarctic research station discovers an alien buried in the snow for over 100,000 years. Once unfrozen, the form-changing alien wreaks havoc, creates terror and becomes one of them.

Still one of the best films ever made, the practical effects really are ageless and make it all so much more believable and disturbing.
When they bring the thing back from the other site and they're all looking at it on the table... It's one of the scariest things to ever show up on screen. No one even knows what to say it's so messed up. The slow pan over the mess of different forms is not something they've been able to capture with modern CGI.

THE THINGS audio

Agreed!
One thing people understood back then but most seem to have forgotten: horror movies are about people, not monsters. The characters, dialog, even details like the way they dress, slang, etc. THIS is what makes a movie memorable.
Yes
I mean, this movie is named for the monster, so there’s that…
I think we can all agree that the increase in definition and color grading make it all the more obvious that Kurt Russell is one of the coolest mutherfu@kers who ever lived... Also, The Thing deserves to take its rightful place amongst the upper pantheon of Universal Monsters and should be celebrated and merchandised as such.
That unholy scream of the Thing as it transforms in the dog kennels will haunt my dreams for all eternity.
..Rabbit out
Some company makes a small 3D printed model of the dog/thing.
Love Kurt russell
MCU the Thing
He kinda looks like J. Morrison here.
"Maybe we're at war with Norway"
Now that's a good plot for a story
"Look at Palmer, he's been the way he is since the first day." brilliant foreshadowing.
Masterpiece in sci-fi horror, practical effects, and what a cast! The 80s will always be awesome.
That haunting music, and the freaking incredibly well trained dog, cmon man....
He’s there , constantly in the background , weaving his magic throughout the whole film. The unsung genius of the film ……Mr Ennio Morricone.
There are two movie scores that haunt me- Platoon and The Thing 1982.
Even the dogs acting is good in this
Yeah when he's rolling down that hall he was Clint Eastwood of pups
"Hey thanks for thinkin' about it tho". Honestly one of the best stoner deliveries I've heard.
"Forget it, Palmer!" That shouldn't be too difficult stoners are pretty forgetful. XD
One of those movies which can be rewatched again and again, and every time enjoying it as if watching for the first time.
As opposed to the prequel where the first time you see it its already tired and familiar
Only the best movies are rewatchable and this one is definitley in that category. One of the best mivies of all time.
A masterpiece of isolation, distrust and hopelessness...
It almost looks like it came out in 2015 which is pretty amazing
The magic of film.
0:44 They censured the word s**t.... meanwhile the gored eye? is all good 🤣.
Fucked up world. Lol
When “PG” meant something completely different.
For anyone on the fence about double dipping, the Universal 4K/UHD BD release is a fabulous upgrade. There's an obvious increase in fine detail, but where this new release really shines: the color grading is finally spot on, and the use of HDR puts it over the top. It's never looked more real/3D than in this release. The flares pop with realism. The flashlights in the infamous kennel scene make it feel like you're in the room with them. The blue runway lights on the snow at night. I was nervous that Universal might drop the ball on this one, but it's spectacular. I only wish they had included the OG 4.1 sound mix from the Shout release.
Looking to upgrade my TV size, what size 4k you rocking with? Excited to watch this in 4k soon

One of my all time favorite movies. That ensemble of actors really gel.
Dysart went on to star with Petere Sellars in BEING TTHERE - - - character PALMER was on BARNEY MILLER four times - -
Epic film, 10/10 masterpiece.
One of my top three all time favorites. I first saw this at the age of 15 in the mid 80s on VHS tape with a buddy in a dark basement in the middle of the night. SCARED THE S* OUT OF ME AND I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!
I saw this and Alien as a young boy.
Im not going to say it messed me up..
America did that.
Universal… why you don’t have anything in your parks based on this 1982 version of the story is beyond me. You own it. Not like half the IP’s you have to license to have a presence there.
Lars was the real MVP, he died trying
"there was a reason why he shot at the dog we should've held him hostage"
the more you analyse this film the more it starts to mess with your head. exactly who is who and when exactly they no longer are. it's why 40 years later it still has a massive cult following.
One of the greatest films of all time
Kurt Russell was paid $400,000 for his role. For 1982 that's pretty good.
That would be approximately 1.4 million in 2023's money
made him a legend.. I say made him a legend...
Looks fantastic. Still a perfect movie. It's aged well.
I can't believe how amazing it looks!!! I hadn't bought any because I don't own a player and I also thought blu ray only came in 1080p. I didnt know there was a UHD version of blu ray. Then I realized the other day.... I have a freaking PS5! Lol! First movie I looked up to see if they had UHD is my favorite movie of all time, The Thing, and I'm not disappointed! I want it! 😂
The scariest thing we come to learn in this scene is, that both the pothead and the dog, are Things.
Was he already assimilated at this point?
Tha doggeh isn't that scary tho
I have this in my list of Top 5 Movies. In no particular order: Alien, Cross of Iron, Memories of Murder, The Thing (1982), Margin Call.
This movie, The American Werewolf In London and the Howling were the last of the greatest special effects movies before CGI. This type of imagery is going to be a lost art form before to long...and that is a sad fact unto itself....Totally just great effects movie making...
I'm gonna get insulted for this but someone has to say it :
An american werewolf in London is a shitty movie with amazing special effects. The transformation is incredibly well done but at the end of the day, the movie itself is still pretty bad.
@@s.p..smdness8748 Kind of agree , the effects are outstanding and make it worth watching but story wise it's really not that great. Personally I think the original Terminator has the best story and half decent effects
@@s.p..smdness8748 Agreed..I was just talking about the awesome transformation effects of the film...something that is rather quickly becoming a dying art form....
The Fly has great practical effects too!
@@s.p..smdness8748 It's quite a short and empty movie. The scene when they are attacked and Jack is mauled is frightening and intense, the undead Jack visiting scenes are disturbing, and the transformation was incredible to watch. But other than that I agree.
Having Stevie Wonder’s _Superstition_ play in the background just adds so much to the theme and atmosphere of the movie.
He cut his own throat so deep it's like someone axed his throat.
I just bought the blu ray few months ago and didn't know there'd be a 4k release, time to double down lol
You gotta be fucking kidding.
Beautiful. Be watching the whole thing again in October. Man, the sequel was a swing and a miss.
Got that right dude. I thought it sucked! It was actually a prequel.
Its a prequel not a sequel tho :P
Best "thing" about the prequel was the ending because we already knew it lead into the greatest sci-fi horror film of all time.
@@fishordie1992 Got the remastered original queued up to go this week!
Classic sci-fi horror.
I still want to see the deleted scenes about MacReady and his inflatable doll lol. The stills are hilarious.
The censoring of words in this clip is depressing.
I was looking for this comment. My thought exactly. Pretty ironic for this film especially.
I love this movie! It's one of my Top 5 favorites of all time! I watch it three or four times every year, and at least once around Halloween. I hope the Blumhouse remake based on the newly released expanded novella "Frozen Hell" is good too.
There's a station in Antarctica that plays this movie every year as part of their tradition.
@@sztypettto correct! The Amundsen-Scott Antarctic Station.
Dang that Dog's acting is giving legends like Kurt Russell and Keith David a run for their money
The man in the chair had blocked himself in that room because another team member was trying to kill him.
Paranoia and fear had its way at the camp.
And his throat had been sliced, but we also observe those bloody entrails coming from his wrist...... A detail that could have been dismissed as jus frozen blood in th cold.... But we th viewers know better..
I wonder if Mac and Doc caught that.
Epic. Most underrated movie of all time.
Profanity muted? Well, thw children are safe now.
1:52. Nothing says "Are you out of your fucking mind" like that look on Kurt's face.
Lol. The Big ol Taco Hat. That shits Hilarious
Funny to think when you go through the soundtrack to this movie, Stevie Wonders: Superstitious would pop up. Seems so out of place lol
Old times when Hollywood knew to make awesome movies, using only cardboard and styrofoam.
Poetic. Palmer smoking around kerosene cans.
greatest horror movie ever made on the Earth 🌎 ☄️
I would love it if the thing next year gets a horror attraction for Halloween horror nights
1:18
I dont remember how many they were in the prequel. Were they a team of ten ppl?
Where can I watch this? This was one of my favorite movies since I was a child.
I wanted the communication guy to survive much longer.
Tbh the standard bluray on SeriesX on a 4k tv the upscale looks fantastic. I think Il only get the 4k version if I get it cheap
Heads up for anyone looking to watch this as a Fathom Event on Wednesday June 22, I took the family to see it yesterday, $60 for 4 people. Let me tell you the showing was GARBAGE. Looked almost like VHS quality, very poor sound and cropped to 16:9 ! Been reading a ton of complaints from others as well. I wish I hadn't bothered. One other thing, the movie started and they didn't even dim the lights until the dog is jumping up on Bennings when he gets shot. That part is on the theater... man I was so p'od. NEVER again will I go to another Fathom Event.
that Norwegian dude cut off mr happy because it was changing into the thing
Absolutely Amazing look 👌👌👌
Wahnsinn was hier noch an Bild Quali rausgeholt wurde. Einer meiner absoluten lieblings Filme. Bin gespannt auf den DTS-X Ton
4:55 this shadow is from Palmer, yes?
I think Palmer or Clark
@@LillianGraceFullofficialClark was confirmed human judging by the collar it ain’t Palmer as well but most likely norris

Norris
I’m fairly certain it’s Norris.
Great now i have to watch this for the 100th time, and i love it!
The most Beautiful movie than I watched
I think we can all agree that the Neo Evangelist Mormon Christo Fascist Kosher censoring of mere adjectives detracts from DEMOCRACY.
Universal Pictures…
You actually bleeped the expletives out of this movie clip, because why?
Really?
You are quite the mega-corporation….
Also, was it just me? Or is Kurt Russel one of the finest men in movie history, head to toe.
Picture quality is outstanding.
Masterpiece
love it how they censor an extended preview. they should censor Brandon, not these previews.
10/10. But Universal has...maybe had? an issue with the discs in the UK.
I got the special edition, and at 95 mins into the film, the picture broke and I got artefact blocking.
I was gutted because at the time the special edition had sold out. What I did was to get the normal one and swap the discs over and return the other as they are the same disc in every way :-)
The regular disc is fine and I was happy once more. However, I have now seen that I was not the only one. There are forums with people having the same issue. Most were the special editions and a few normal.
It might have been the first batch and the issue is sorted? But if you do get a UK one. Skip to 90 mins and watch to see if over the next 5 mins it happens to your disc.
The scene with dog entering the room seems peaceful, but weird. In the book adapted from the film that was on sale the same year had this scene turn out in a slightly more creepy way. The dog enters the room. A scuffle ensues. The door is slammed shut. Cut to next scene. In other words a violent take over.
For anyone that doesn’t know, during this scene, they’re currently three things the dog, palmer and Norris.
not really, it's only the dog who in this scene assimilates Norris, Palmer gets assimilated way later
@@Armiin06Who assimilates Palmer tho? Norris?
@@Armiin06 it looked like Palmer who gets found by dog-thing in the scene in this clip. But I could be wrong.
@@Jazzmaster1992 Norris is first to get assimilated
@@userKnuckles90From what I read, the person in the room isn’t any of the actors but the set staff (either the director or one of the producers). It was meant to play into the paranoia of the movie by making the identity of the victim ambiguous, even though it looks like Norris or Palmer. Even then that still works for the theme because we don’t know who was assimilated first.
My question is how much flower did Palmer take to Antarctica?
Definitely a classic !
A CLASSIC,NUFF SAID
Ennio Morricone wrote perfect music for this movie. He got the creepy string movements just right for it, mixed with a good bit of an early 80's techno sound.
Looks great!
One detail i like, you know palmer is the thing when he stops smoking weed.
Thank you
A most classic sci-fi horror film
Still cool carpenter film

Its ok!
can you please put all fast and furious franchise Extended Preview in 4K Ultra HD please?
Palmer is the Marijuana Thing hahahah! 😂
He stops smoking it after he is turned
The prequel was pretty decent. Time for Carpenter to do a sequel, while he's got the time.
