Just saw the movie today. My goodness, Fantasia was fantastic as Celie and absolutely deserves an Oscar nomination. As does Danielle Brooks and Taraji P. Henson. They are Oscar worthy as well.
It’s exciting and surprising to see the initial reactions for this movie are positive! The trailers were really not selling it well. Love the original, love musicals.
I was very confused why someone remade “the color purple”. Now that I know it’s a music it makes more sense. I don’t get this whole hidden musical marketing. I remember watching the “mean girls” trailer and it looked like a shot for shot remake. The marketing should give us a reason to care about these remakes. If they should the songs then the audience will get why this stands out from the original.

The making of Jaws became a musical called Bruce and a play called The Shark is Broken 😀. The stage show of Colour Purple is great, shame they have cut so many songs.
Hairspray proved that movies based on musical plays which the musical play itself was based on a movie can be successful at the box office so it'll be interesting to see how The Color Purple turned out aswell as the new Mean Girls musical movie coming next month. Seems like Warner Bros is going to win big for Christmas with Wonka, The Color Purple, and god knows if Aquaman 2 will be DCEU's last hope for a success at the box office 😂
Just came back from watching it and i cried so many times! The screen musical is it's own thing. I wish they would have kept in the song "Say Our Prayer" from thw Broadway adoptation but thats just mu own preference. The movie is definitely worth a second and third watch but, i agree with you that the 1 and second act felt just a hair rushed. ❤
I remember our teacher reading us the book in the fifth grade... Intense couldn't even describe it. Love the 1985 film and I was able to see the musical too. I am so so excited for this cast and to hear the amazing music again.
Did the teacher censor out the more sexual parts? Then again, I guess that you would have needed to read the book yourself afterwards to even know that those parts existed in that case.
There were 6 people in the theater, my son and I included. 5 black and 1 autistic white guy. I noticed that he had strong reactions at the sad parts, the white guy. I wish more white people watched such films. Start small, easy does it.
With Wonka doing well at the box office so far and now The Color Purple, i hope this could put the musical genre back on track at the box office after several flops that the genre has faced. I'm a huge fan of this genre so if there's any good ones, i'm definitely hoping to succeed in theaters. It was a shame that Spielberg's West Side Story and In The Heights flopped as those two were pretty damn good musical movies. I honestly blame Cats and Dear Evan Hansen for ruining people's expectations with musicals nowadays, sorry about that 😂😂
disagree with trailers hiding the fact that its a musical. there are scenes in in the trailer with them singing. while its subtle it is no where like the recent Mean Girls trailer that recently came out
That's the point I was making - it's subtle. If you know it's a musical, it's obvious. But especially with the first trailer, it wasn't very forthcoming about being a musical.
Based on the Broadway Show and Music I LOVED it!!! Fantasia was so amazing and every supporting actor on point. I haven't cried that much in ages. In my Top 5 of 2023. My only wish is they give 3 Best Actress Oscars this year to Fantasia, Emma Stone and Carrie Mulligan. I will see again. And Spielberg's still classic but this is a different genre' so room for both to be revered. And I recommend seeing with a crowd. Applause and "Amens" are necessary.
I agree, great movie. Took me about 15 minutes to get into it and stop feeling concerned about Zac Efron apparent steroid use. Hope he doesn’t continue that too long
I was lucky to The Color Purple on Broadway with Cynthia Erivo in the lead role. She brought the house down so I was really hoping she'd be in the film adaptation. But I'm looking forward to it nonetheless!
In my opinion Da'Vine Joy Randolph is the frontrunner for Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Danielle Brooks is equally great, but Randolph's performance is the performance of all performances this year in that particular category. I am predicting both will be nominated for an Oscar.
