This video kinda made me realize that isolation present in the world of One Piece is perfectly summed up in Luffy's fear of being alone, and in the found family that's everywhere in the story. In a world a small and connected as ours it's hard to fathom that each island is literally it's own world. No wonder they're all so unique.
The SMILE fruit reveal made me sick. I had to stop reading so I could take time to process it. I tend to hear Orochi did it just for fun. And while that’s twisted enough, the reason why is far worse. He did it so he no longer had to hear them “complain” about their situation being enslaved by both him and Kaido.
Oh yeah I found orochi especially vile because of his twisted use of the smile fruit. I definitely think the reveal of the smile fruit in ebisu was one of the best reveals in the story.
making it worse is how he then starts abusing and hating the populace for laughing and smiling all the time, seeing them as mocking him...because he seemingly forgot HE'S the one who made them like that in the first place
What got me most about it is that they knew who Yasuie really was, they all loved him, a former lord of Hakumai, Zoro being angry at them for laughing all while the true princess of the country was there, pained at the situation she’d been stuck in for 20 years who revealed the truth which shocked the readers, watchers and Zoro, that was a hard part to get through
Another scary thing that shocked me is Big Mom's backstory. Mother Carmel selling kids to the World Gov. and the HEAVY implication of BM being a cannibal.
I thought it was already confirmed, Her bloody tea parties end goal is to kill everyone and enjoy the aftermath flavouring the wedding cake. Not to mention, she did at the very least eat Mother Carmel. Since she inherited her ability through the attack on titan method.
this really fits in to the newest episode, the fan letter to one piece. you don't think about the ordinary marines or ordinary people that much in the one piece world because you have all of these stars, but they are still apart of the world and deal with the consequences.
Nice video. One really does forget that the vast world we get to see as the viewers or read is so much beyond the scope of what its inhabitants wittness. We are used to sky islands, under water worlds and whatever the one piece world has to offer, but to those people stuck on a tiny rock in the sea sorrounded by sea kings they are a myth. I believe that realization makes the straw hats journey even more wonderful; besides their personal goals they get to wittness a world most people wont ever or wont live enough to tell the tale.
I mean... most people Luffy meets in the East Blue thought, Devil Fruits were myths before he met them. Buggy's moniker in the East Blue was ' The Immortal'. The normal citizen doesn't even know the basic rules of that world... it's horrifying when you think about it, but it makes for great worldbuilding, since our first few crew members are people just like that, with no clue about the world they live in, so when we learn everything alongside them it feels more organic, like we're a part of the journey. Might be a bit of a pet-pieve of mine, but I despise it when stories have their characters learn about things they should have known for their whole lives for the first time. I think the most egregious of those instances is, when Naruto doesn't know what Chakra is. Can't stand that.
When it was revealed that the people of Ebisu Town were actually victims of SMILE fruits and not just cheerful people at Yasuie’s execution, I was actually sick to my stomach. And the implication that it could never be reversed is truly haunting, especially since Killer, while not a main character, is still pretty notable in the world of One Piece and it’s crazy to think that he’s also just another victim of the SMILE fruits
The hundred year void is actually inspired by a real historycal event known as The Bronze Age Collapse, a period in time that we dont have a clue what destroyed the society that existed in that age.
What's really bad about the world of One Piece most is according to Vegapunk the entire world is already on the verge of sinking due to centuries of war
@@BigDadPiratesIt's obvious, to the sky or to the depths. The isles are no longer a viable option, adapt or drown. Vegapunk was trying to make fake sky island clouds so that he could salvage a few islands from the oceans wrath. But that dreams dead and gone. ( Also fresh water is gonna be non-existent, so better hope tech is advanced enough to mass convert salt water to fresh water.)
remember, those clouds can preserve wild life and whole ecosystems. Those would be a huge help in the effort to save humanity, but uh nope it's dead now.
This was an amazing video!! One thing I'd like to mention that you went over a little bit is concerning King the Wildfire/Alber. I still can't believe that a whole race of people were (as far as we know) wiped out completely aside from one, singular person, and even then that's because he was being used as a science experiment (and considering he was recaptured by the government after wano, he's probably being experimented on again). And something that struck me as a more personal horror is that King was, in the very least, complicit in Kaido enslaving an entire nation.
The last thing you said, that Alber helped ethnically cleanse and destroy Wano is super interesting. I think there are a lot of instances in history where the oppressed become the oppressors. It’s a vicious cycle. Who’s going to break that cycle?? Hmmmm
Nice video I’ve been watching one piece for over 10 years and keep up with every news. This is well done and explains way more than even I thought about .
Oda likes to add many parts of history into his story in a creative way. Including the darker themes. Such as: • Wholecake arc featuring events from late Victorian era to World War II England and Germany. With the Big Mom pirates being based off Queen Victoria I and her children, and Germa 66 as Nazis. • Caesar and "Land of The Dead" being a reference to the volcanic eruption in Pompeii. • Albert Einstein's idea being used as as a weapon. Just like Vegapunk with the Mother Flame.
yeah I've seen people completely ignore the isolation of countries. they don't remember than in the blues for most people even just devil fruits, the most common stuff we see, are a legend.
Oh yeah so much of the world is known through myth, legends, or rumors or just not known at all. The irony is that this isolation DRIVES people to seek something else…oftentimes turning to piracy to see the world themselves and actualize their dreams
Your whole beginning rant made me realize "Bounty Posters" break the world building in many different ways. Did you know that the main reason Bounty Posters could even exist was because of the Fax Machine? So this immediately makes the idea of Bounty Posters highly questionable and their level of technology. You need a photo, a copy machine, and the ability to send the compiled data to make that poster. The history of the Fax Machine is very very early and that's because of how relatively easy it is to send and receive radio waves. In Final Fantasy 8 they had it so all Radio Waves were not able to be broadcasted around the world. As you talked to NPCs you quickly realize you were the uneducated portion of the world that was entirely cutoff from modern civilization. But this was only made apparent once you realized radio waves were cutoff. Now there's something called Radio Snails in One Piece that essentially sends Radio Waves to one another to communicate. So there's actually no real evidence they're that cut off from one another especially if you look into the history of radio. Hell a singular flying devil fruit user makes most of those claims questionable as to how isolated they are.
Yeah the printing press seems to only be in the hands of WEJ, World Government and Cross Guild for sure. Fortunately Vegapunk and other scientists have progressed technology significantly in the past 800 years. Great comment!
There’s definitely a good chance. Assuming there are some connections with some things in Norse mythology soon then I think it’s more likely because even Norse mythology dips its toes into some cosmic shit so combine that with some devils and demons stuff and it certainly could head in that direction.
There’s been a theory that I kinda like the general idea of is that Imu has an ink fruit or something like that, that they can rewrite the rules by creating things through ink and stuff. This theory doesn’t have much evidence obviously lol Anyways luffy’s fruit would allow him to literally break free from the panels and story is the basic pay off! Oda would make it much cooler than my quick description haha
They do perform executions at Impel Down. Level 6 is explicitly death row. The other levels also perform executions, and naturally kill people due to their environment. Notice that everyone in Impel Down we know of (outside New Kama Land) only arrived there a few months ago. That's because most people don't live that long there. I think the WG going after Ace is the exception rather than the rule. They say something of that nature when they arrested Tom: he was only executed because he aided Gold Roger specifically. All the other pirates he sold ships to didn't matter.
Great video and analysis! One thing I do want to mention however is that crimes by association weren't only limited to bloodlines (Gol D. Roger and Ace). The government also want to judge Tom the fishman from Water 7 for building the ship Oro Jackson that Gol D. Roger and his crew sailed on.
Yeah that’s a good point! I feel like I remember that coming from cipher pol and not all the way from the elders. In that way, ciphor pol ate up the propaganda and combined it with their own prejudices and darkness within themselves. There’s kinda an interesting situation with the ancient weapons where the Elders never really cared about getting the weapons, they just want to bury the information. The desire to get a weapon was from ciphor pol
When I watched Yasui's daughter accidentally eating a SMILE fruit, and he also decided to eat also that for her. It just made me tear up and literally say "now that's just messet up". I just thought it was so cool because I haven’t really seen a show quite like One Piece at least in this aspect, and whenever the villain is defeated it always feels satisfying in a way I can’t describe 😅😊
Yeah that’s pretty interesting…I hadn’t thought about that too much before but it is an interesting choice as a writer. I’m guessing Oda has notes for the backgrounds but often feels that it isn’t needed…but just knowing their motivations and histories allows him to write their present version in a way that we as the audience can feel that the characters are developed even without the backstory inserted into the story. Thanks for sharing
Yeah I think a lot of manga artists and writers do similar stuff. JoJo’s author, Araki, has a pretty famous book called Manga in Theory and Practice. It’s pretty illuminating
No I don’t. I should do that someday but there’s forest temple theme from OoT, give up from Lisa the painful, one is from Scarlet Hollow, silent hill 2, soul master theme hollow knight, there’s another hollow knight song as the final one before my outro. I promise to make a playlist of the most frequently used music in my videos which I’ll link to this description and in a playlist on my channel. I promise to do this before 2025 so subscribe if you’re not so you find me easily :D
The technology and geography in One Piece is a big tell that there used to be A) A lot more land and countries (sunk by the WG or another old super weapon from before it) and B) There’s a level of development the WG allows the people to be at. Whatever the WG deems good AND manageable is allowed to exist. Vegapunk stopped being manageable so he must go.
You honestly could have gone even further. Devil Fruits and Haki, there are literally individuals that can crack and break reality on a whim. I do not believe they were exaggerating when they said Whitebeard could destroy the world. People like Doflamingo, Crocodile, Blackbeard, Kaido, Mihawk, Garp, Akainu, Shanks. I agree that there are nearly endless things I left out. The strength and powers of people they mostly just read about in newspapers would probably make many of them second guess leaving their little islands even more lmaoo
