  • How to surf - falling off safely without injuring yourself. You may have noticed that surfers tend to fall off a certain way don’t they? It’s not by accident.
    Surfers, as a first priority, are trying to fall off of the wave as far away from their surfboard as possible, but there are some other important things to know as well to avoid getting hurt whilst riding waves.

      A friend of mine who I used to skateboard along in my youth (and who always also surfed) keeps challenging me to drop from bigger waves when I didn't even dropped from the smaller ones yet! It becomes especially frightening when the only experience you have with those bigger waves are massive slams! Firstly, I gotta learn how to take off in smaller waves (which I haven't just yet), and then think about the bigger ones... Otherwise I'd just get traumatized!

    • @millerj.8448

      @@rafaelmarangoni I can tell you from experience, you are correct. Gets many repetitions in on small waves that you can successfully ride.

      @@KalesBroccoli love the videos man. I'm also very keen on Greg's suggestion. I'm predominately riding backside at my local breaks and have a dodgy trailing knee. When it gets heavy I'm concerned the wave will land on me and it might give way leading to further injury. As a result i often shoot myself forward or break through the back prematurely...would love some insight on that!

    I love watching videos of your students progressing and the “side by sides” with you (a skilled surfer) and then, (beginner-intermediate) It’s easy to find videos of skilled surfers. But it’s hard to find videos of surfers with the same issues as beginner/intermediate surfers like me.

    Your board (or others' board) is the most dangerous thing when surfing. 30 years surfing, my board broke my nose with an edge rebound directly onto my face. Could have been worse, but, as you say, if you're not in hurry (competing or such), it's always good to protect head and face with your arms and take some seconds under before poping out to the surface. Great vids, always sensible and good to watch.

I wasn't even that close to shore it was just quite shallow and I guess I had so much force. I tried to spread my arms a bit to disperse the downward force but still hit real hard. Is there anything I could have done different or it this sometimes unavoidable?

    I recently picked up surfing as I moved to Sydney from Europe and your videos have been very helpful. One thing I would like to hear more about is duck dive. What is the proper technique and also, how big a board you can actually duck dive. As a beginner surfer I have been riding a high volume 7.6 fun board. With a lot of effort I can practically duck dive that board but sometimes it just goes horribly wrong and needless to say, paddling out in bigger wave conditions can be a real challenge... yet I don't think I am ready to move to a shorter, lower volume board.

Short story, always surf with a a mate!!. Took a couple of surfs to get my confidence back, but fully back and stoked now. A good question is the best way to fall in a barrel or step bowly section? Don’t worry about the spray worry about the technique

    Can you make a video on foot positioning specifically on a short board, such as where your back foot should be while pumping (ex on the tail pad or off of it) and how and when to shift your feet while surfing a wave cause I know your supposed to shift your feet forward while surfing a smaller wave, so you don’t apply too much weight to the back of the board and bog it down but I just want to know how much further forward you should put that back foot because sometimes I want to go for a turn on a small wave but I find my back foot is just too far off the tail pad and then I don’t have time, to quickly put my foot back and hit a section; essentially I just want to know where the sweet spot is usually, on a short board for pumping, so this would be incredibly helpful if you could go over that..please?🙏🏽!

    Awesome guys! Just a quick question, when falling off your board in white water/waves which are shallow, does the same rule of falling off to the side of your board apply even if it is shallow water?🤙

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, belly flop or backflop generally apply :)

    was attempting to surf in september in new jersey. the board did a nose dive and the nose lodged itself into the sand. the wave threw me into the fin and it went straight into my inner thigh, completely cutting part of my quad in half and getting a few millimeters from severing my femoral artery. was actually tough to watch this video lol

    Great vid mate, helps a bunch, but what about the thumbnail dude! I have been surfing for about 6 months and go out in pretty much everything on my 9'3 longboard (fast way to learn!). The only really bad bail was like the one in the thumnail where i paddled into a big wave too late, was about to get dumped by it, flung the board out from underneath me and then came down on the board which was touching the sand floor and did not give way. and f*ck me did that hurt and leave some gnarly bruises. Im sure that would break bones in bigger surf or even just coming down on it wrong. Is there a way to avoid that one other than picking the wave better and timing better ? Thx in advance!

      @KalesBroccoli 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's one of the worst ways to fall hahaha I didn't have any vision of it though - falling onto a rolled upside down board is so painful it kills!! Again, this comes down to falling away from the board as much as possible, but let me tell you, I've had it happen!

    • @KalesBroccoli

    Does the underneath part of a wave travel faster than the front of a wave?

    • @gabrieldynkin5078
      @gabrieldynkin5078 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, its the top that travels faster while the lower part getting slowed by the sand
      eef..thus the breaking of the wave

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The top changes quicker but both travel the same (the lip falls on top so one could argue it moves quicker)

    • @charlesclements4350
      @charlesclements4350 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I had developed this silly idea that maybe the standing wave would create a squeeze between the bottom and the weight above it causing the bottom to be pushed forward.
