On the 96 cherokees there’s a little plastic cap on top of the steering column trim. If you pop that top off, there’s a screw down there that you can unscrew and it will disengage the airbag without causing a light or anything like that. All I can imagine is they designed it for off-roading and not having to worry about steep approaches and airbags going off.
I did this a year ago and im very pleased with the result the only thing is the horn button part i glued the leather on it and if i did this again i would take off the steering wheel and see if i could leather wrap everything on the steering wheel where it was before
