  • The nature of Finland at Inarijärvi (Lake Inari) has a very positive impact on me an so I wanted to make this video. But it is not just this place: Many places all around the country have the same impact on me. I wonder if Finnish people know what they have. I think many of them know, more than the people in my home country value nature there. I just enjoy being here, so thanks for everything Finland.

Snow and cold are not a problem. The constant darkness.. that's another matter!
If it's warm winter and there's no snow, that's much worse because everything is darker and damp. Snow reflects light after all.

Thank you for the reminder, Merlin. I'm a Finn who moved to to the UK a year ago. It made me realise how lucky I am to have been born in Finland.

Well put about the part of nothing complain about and just to enjoy, never thought about it in depth, but that nails it pretty well coming from a Finn.

I'd say most Finns know how lucky they are and how much undisturbed nature, and natural beauty, mean to them/us, loving our mökkis and wanting to have a special place, away from urban life and crowds. Also away from tourists, of which there sometimes are negative opinions, if they don't understand the purpose of the Every Man's Right (Jokamiehen oikeus, Allemansrätten). But if tourists come with as much awe as you have, you are as welcome as anyone, in an equal fashion. One cut down young tree (which is only damage, as it isn't even burning well, because it is too wet inside) and the good-will is gone. Shared love and joint caring - they deeply connect! Thank you for sharing beauty, silence, awe! I was transported!

Merlin, thank you for sharing your tranquil moment there. The clean nature, fresh air and perfect silence.. you found inner peace for a moment, and yes, these experiences are the basis of our happiness. ❤

Yes, but when you have lived here about 40 years you just doesn´t notice it so often. I remember i i was still kid (that time computers were Commodore 64) and the summer came, we didn´t stey inside to play games. We were outside all the time we could. We explored near by forrests, went to swimming, playd football and what ever came in mind. But unless it was rainy day we were out. We were living at west coast and this small city is and sometimes we went to the sea to swim and sometimes in to the small lakes. After i was nine years old i got permition to go by myself and my friends to do these things without any supervising parents. That is propably the reason that i´ve always loved to wonder in the wildernes and never affraight to get lost. That time we didn´t had selfphones and other fancy electronics with us to call help if something would´ve happened.
Nothing serious never happened even that we had knives with us. We used sticks as toys and some times we took even some sausages with us and grilled those in open fire at the woods or the beach. We sure made fire in safe places that we would not couse woodfires. We were very wise even at small kids and first digged a hole and putted rocks over it that wind could not spread the fire outside of the firepit.
It was so great to grov in this kind of enviroment and have the trust of our parents that we weren´t doing anything stupid. That grovs your independence very much.

Oh, you're in Finland ✨️ What a delight it is to see you finally here and to hear that you've enjoyed your visit fully! I will soon check out all your other content from your visit. It is beautiful to hear from an experience of someone who is not Finnish. Lots of people (probably I myself am guilty sometimes) take these things for granted. And then at times I watch a documentary and gey deeply upset of just how squeezed and exploited nature is elsewhere. I haven't had the easiest weeks recently, due to a tight working and studying schedule, but this truly lifted my heart and soul. So thank you for your insight. Tomorrow I'll go enjoy October and try to get myself one of those moments of "I have nothing to complain about" to relieve from this stress and get back to the roots ♡

Thanks Claudia. I think many people take for granted what they have and opposed to that many Finnish people that I’ve met so far really appreciate their beautiful nature. I mean it’s not on me to go to a foreign country and preach people about what they have to appreciate 🤣 but I recognized this as something positive especially compared to my home Germany where many people don’t realize the treasure they have in nature. And your videos clearly show that you know very well what your country has to offer.

Being able to complain is a part of happiness. In quite a few countries in the world, if you are caught complaining about certain things, you won't have a happy ending.

I think Finns know well that we have a strong bond with nature as nation.
What we might sometimes not understand or remember is how rare in the world it is. It's sometimes hard to understand how in some places in world one cannot access the nature very easily. Also that it might not be even be because there is no nature nearby but because you might need to pay to get to go to walk in forest. It's also mindboggling to be abroad and see locals throwing thrash in the see or lake they live next to. Don't they understand how much they just make their own life harder and uglier, one wonders.

@magicofshootingstar5825 You nailed it. I live in the Central Valley of California, and a few world-class destinations are within 2 to 3 hours driving of my home. Yosemite national park, Pinnacles national park, and Sequoia national parks. And the vast Mojave Desert is only four hours away. Death Valley is on the east side of the Sierra Nevada.
San Francisco, the Gold and Central Coasts, Big Sur and giant redwood trees are all very great places to visit. But to do that, everyone has to pay, sit or stand in long lines, and everyone has to deal with trash… and more and more, everyone has to deal with graffiti and vandalism.
Yosemite is just overrun with people. Gang graffiti and ‘art’ with spray paint is showing up in Yosemite and the amount of trash people leave on our beaches is ridiculous.

Add sauna (and beer) with the beautiful nature and you'll have all the basic ingredients to feel the inner peace, the foundation of the hapiness.

True happiness cannot be achieved without having sad moments in your life, but what determines your happiness is how the society supports you when you're at your lowest, how safe you feel when you fall down.

Do Finnish people even know how lucky they are?: Yes we do, taking care of nature is one of the biggest values that pretty much every Finn shares. That's why there is so much well kept and cared for nature in Finland. We could have just chopped all the forests down just to make lumber & paper products to give our economy big bump but we refused to do that at the cost of nature. Cause Finns truly believe that nature is part of us hurting it will just bring ruin to our selves.

The funny thing is we Finns have a saying "its a lottery win to be born in Finland" so i think its safe to say that most people here know how lucky they are. Still, i think its stupid that there are some people who complain about stuff like the word "firemen" even tho there is like 10 firewomen in the whole country. We are blessed and some people have nothing better to complain about except stupid words. There was even people complaining about the word "sotamies" roughly translated to "war man" its the rank of private in Finland. Its kinda stupid because men have conscription and women dont. Once conscription is for both genders i will accept the term "sotilas" as the rank of private, which means "soldier".

ohh you got it all the way upside down. i grew up ON a large lake in finland and to me being in a small rubber dhingy just floating around in thebcold autumn i would all the time be thinking wtf am i doing here. i should be warming up the sauna or catching fish at least. especially if the weather turns even slightly. i guess there are flacid moments like these that you can capture.
but when the winter comes, the REAL fun starts! you go snowboarding, skii-ing, ice-skating, ice-surfing .... you make a race track on the lake ice and drive your cars with your friends and family and try to make lap times and that is the way finns learn car control in the winter.
you can jump from trees and rooftops and huge cliffs into snowpiles and go snowshoe walking.. ... and toboganing!
snowmobiles are the most fun thing though. or ... . .
or then just cross-country ski to some far-away lean-to and make a fire and grill some sausage and drink hot coco with maybe some stroh .. and try to make it to the sauna after that 🤣
dunno. you REALLY should visit in winter anyway 😅
    imho it's FAR from depressing.

it sounds like you think raging around with a sweat on your head is enjoyable, but what's wrong with getting quiet and calming down? For some, simply walking in nature can be an experience.
