I'm hindu myself. In addition to this , my father is a priest in a temple. My POV is that, this story is a fact but the capabilities of characters shown is fiction. I think stories (true incidents) like these tend to become divine over ages. But it is true that , this is one of the oldest stories of mankind. Also ,I have read many stories of Hinduism,the good part which I love the most that there are no commandments given in any of them. Only in Bhagwat Geeta, you will see lord Krishn giving teachings to Arjun, but those are also like a philosophical discussion between a teacher and a student (no commandments given). Other than mocking ,feel free to critically comment on Ramayan.
yes, it was common practice those days to give divine touch to your king to make them immortal in memories forever. It's just that Valmiki and Vyas did fantastic job in that to make the story immortal.
Hinduism main scriptures are Vedas and Upanishads. Purans Ramayan, Mahabharata etc are itihas which explains vedas and Upanishads teaching in a story form 🕉️ Upanishads are Hindu most important scriptures. There are total 108 Upanishads in which 13 are most important. But Mahabharata and Ramayan are very good for upgrading your self knowledge and for karm yog, gyan yog, bhakti yog, sankhya yog etc. In hindu religion total 4 Vedas, 108 Upanishads, 18 purans, ramayan, Mahabharata, bhagwat geeta, astavakra geeta, vigyan bhairav tantra and lots of other scriptures
No history and itihasa are two different terminologies, history is a western concept which dives into core scientific evidence whereas itihasa’ is always a fusion of fiction , philosophy, and cyclical events which happened is happening and will happen.

If you read Mahabharata, it's not as divine as how people perceive it. It is closer to nowadays people and can be pretty much real story. no one was perfect in Mahabharata and that's how people are. Ramayana is quite idealistic in that's sense. Also, many of the things are metaphorical and shouldn't be take everything literally.

Those who think its a mythology we respect your opinion. More than thinking that if these things are real or not we should be more focused on extracting the life lessons and learnings that we get from this story. Implement those lessons in your life to make your life better. Rather then debating if its a mythology or History both the opinions are respected.
Which IMO is the point of these stories... If you were to claim this is history, then the immediate followup is Do we seriously believe Hanuman could fly and lift mountains on a single palm, that Raavan had 10 heads, that there was a whole race of sentient monkey people... All questions that detract from the point of these epics. The most realistic thing I can point out is the Ram Setu.. which exists. Now Hindus believe that it was Ram's followers that made it, scientists believe that was a rare but natural phenomenon... What does it matter how it was formed? These stories are not historical, more so historical fiction. It takes something that probably happened and exaggerates it because people back then had no idea about the world and couldn't rationalize their experience. It is a waste of time trying to argue how real these stories are, but try to understand what they are trying to say.

My favourite version to read has always been C. Rajagopalachair's 'Ramayana' published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. If you can find it over there, you can read it in maybe 3-4 sittings.

Thats the beauty of this religion , that it doesnot have a dogma or "rules" that majority of abrahamic religions have. There are broad ideas that most Hindus would agree on , but that agreement isnt the foundation of dogma as well. In my opinion , humans are far too complicated for one set of rules to be effective or even relevant for many millenia altogether , and thats the reason this way of life has survived for so long . It ascribes philosophies , an "ideal way of life" but not rules.

You can question critically .We don't get offended as asking questions is way to getting to know truth. Only when people mock , insult and make false allegations .Only then Hindus get upset. Ramayan ,Mahabharat has no commandments. Both are just told as something that happened. In Gita ,Krishna just answers Arjuna's Questions. No commandments .

Extremely love to y'all for this series that you've planned. As a background, of course there are a gazillion books in the Sanatani (since forever, till forever) Hindu (those of the Indic land) Dharm (duty), Ramayan and Mahabharat are the historical documentation of soceity through the centring of 1 being or family. They are therefore the only 2 scriptures that are called 'Iti-has', thus is happened. Apart from these there are other scriptures (which are titled differently) that cover guidelines to a good life, duties, storylines, genealogy, and sciences (each aspect having a different category).

Those who think its a mythology we respect your opinion. More than thinking that if these things are real or not we should be more focused on extracting the life lessons and learnings that we get from this story. Implement those lessons in your life to make your life better. Rather then debating if its a mythology or History both the opinions are respected.

Which IMO is the point of these stories... If you were to claim this is history, then the immediate followup is Do we seriously believe Hanuman could fly and lift mountains on a single palm, that Raavan had 10 heads, that there was a whole race of sentient monkey people... All questions that detract from the point of these epics. The most realistic thing I can point out is the Ram Setu.. which exists. Now Hindus believe that it was Ram's followers that made it, scientists believe that was a rare but natural phenomenon... What does it matter how it was formed? These stories are not historical, more so historical fiction. It takes something that probably happened and exaggerates it because people back then had no idea about the world and couldn't rationalize their experience. It is a waste of time trying to argue how real these stories are, but try to understand what they are trying to say.

You start out on a theory, you then try to find a logical reasoning for it, building off existing proven principles and if you can't prove it you table it. Maybe something you find down the line can prove it, but you don't have the knowledge with you at this moment. How do you think we learned about fossils and dinosaurs? You think we just decided one day Yep there was this whole extinct species. That is based on data supporting the view. That is years and years of research and study that was needed to get to where we are now.. I am low-key glad you brought up Dinosaurs because it is the perfect example to illustrate my point. Scientists study hundreds and thousands of bone fragments and let's be real, a lot of extrapolation using existing data to talk about Dinosaurs. Jurassic Park would be the equivalent of Ramayan. It takes something that existed and exaggerates it, albeit for different purposes XD

My favourite version to read has always been C. Rajagopalachair's 'Ramayana' published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. If you can find it over there, you can read it in maybe 3-4 sittings.

Thats the beauty of this religion , that it doesnot have a dogma or "rules" that majority of abrahamic religions have. There are broad ideas that most Hindus would agree on , but that agreement isnt the foundation of dogma as well. In my opinion , humans are far too complicated for one set of rules to be effective or even relevant for many millenia altogether , and thats the reason this way of life has survived for so long . It ascribes philosophies , an "ideal way of life" but not rules.

I'm a sikh and i used to watch mahabharat on tv and it came on tv during covid too but it was in South Indian language so i just watched it without understanding anything
During covid, Ramayan and Mahabharat both came on tv in Hindi. I don't know if your dish tv didn't have Hindi channels or you were not aware.

You can question critically .We don't get offended as asking questions is way to getting to know truth. Only when people mock , insult and make false allegations .Only then Hindus get upset. Ramayan ,Mahabharat has no commandments. Both are just told as something that happened. In Gita ,Krishna just answers Arjuna's Questions. No commandments .

As a background, of course there are a gazillion books in the Sanatani (since forever, till forever) Hindu (those of the Indic land) Dharm (duty), Ramayan and Mahabharat are the historical documentation of soceity through the centring of 1 being or family. They are therefore the only 2 scriptures that are called 'Iti-has', thus is happened.
Apart from these there are other scriptures (which are titled differently) that cover guidelines to a good life, duties, storylines, genealogy, and sciences (each aspect having a different category).
