I find Ethics to be the most important branch in philosophy, and although all of the branches connect in certain ways and are dependent on others for certain conclusions of thought, I find that being able to be an ethical human being, that is, a good human being in accordance with God, is the true sign of wisdom. Metaphysics and Epistemology are interesting and I do enjoy indulging my mind into their depths and many other areas of philosophy, but learning how to be an ethical person is all the more important. I have always found it interesting how Christ practically focused solely on Ethics, how one ought to live. Great lecture Dr. Sadler, I will forever be grateful for your content which allows me to temporally fall into deep philosophical thought with another individual who enjoys philosophy in a very unphilosophical society.
Gregory B. Sadler Hello, Professor. Sadler. I was curious about what Nietzsche meant by "Will to Power". Sorry the question is off topic but I was hoping you could shed some light on this for me since everyone seems to interpret it a different way.
Azrael, The Archangel of Death It is off topic. I have other videos on Nietzsche, which you can search for and watch. Or you can go straight to Nietzsche's own text and read what he says about it
This is the best video I've ever seen on Stoicism. It fills what I feel is a gap in the material available on Stoicism. It's not introductory or advanced and bridges the gaps between them. I also love the comparisons to other philosophies as a way of explanation. Thank you!!!!
@@GregoryBSadler I took notes like I was in school and everything 😂 very interesting topic that is relatable to everyday life and our interactions with people. Definitely sharing this video to everyone I know . Thank you for making this video .
Gregory B. Sadler I started cussing when I was around 10 or so, and at this stage in my life at 33, and actually for the past few years, I've been aware and telling myself that I want to stop. I think it actually sounds horrible while used in negative rants. For some reason, it doesn't bother me when I use it to describe something I'm really excited about and can even drill home how really excited you are about something......but if I'm dropping the fbomb while I'm on a negative horrible rant, it just sounds really bad and ads to the immaturity that I already feel about myself 10 minutes after I finish going on a negative rant. This stoic journey is one heck of a challenge.... its bizarre how long some of us take to change things we want to change, while at the same time it's actually super easy in reality, because it's just an instant choice in the moment to act a certain way. An unread copy of Meditations from 1900 just fell into my hands with the pages still uncut, at just the perfect time in my life, because I've been wanting to read Marcus Aurelius since hearing about him and been wanting to clean my mind up. Pretty cool that I get to be the first one to read this 118 yr old copy. I wonder why there's a little part of being in a negative rant that feels good, like your letting out built up energy, but then after you feel like crap that you went on it? I wonder if going on a rant, positive or negative, let's out a some kind of endorphins in the brain? That would be really interesting....
So what do you mean by this indifference? Can you give an example that would describe it? Because my interpretation is all over the place where it comes to philosophy because of how ridiculous the language can be.
You probably should read then texts then. Don't bother with developing your own "interpretation" until you've put in study. Here's an entire talk on the concept - th-cam.com/video/lQhLDPRLlL0/w-d-xo.html

@@GregoryBSadler It seemed implied you were insulted that I was focusing on the wrong things. Although - I wasn't! I am enjoying these lectures. Looks like I did get off subject a bit.
I just realised something based upon the comments , this is not the best way to start on stoicism look up some quick five minute videos on stoicism first then when your understandings of the vices and virtues of stoicism and the concepts of the universe first for a foundation of understating the definitions for this particular broad topic then come back it will help a lot because instead of teaching the meanings or definitions it looks like he is talking about its interactions stoicism has in the universe.
Well, most of the five minute videos out there are not very good - for Stoicism or philosophy in general. They often give people wrong ideas that then take a lot of time to get past. So, as someone who teaches about Stoicism, I usually warn people away from those. The place to start for any systematic philosophy is really primary texts, which are readily available.
True college text yes but we are talking about casual audio listener's most are busy people with preoccupied mind's ... perhaps you could make a five minute videos? Take your content and focus on definitions and less on history thus establishing a foundation video for what stoicism is summarised.
It's very difficult to make good, well-informed 5 minute videos. I'm already pretty busy with my work, and generally am not looking for unsolicited advice about what to do with my channel, with the exception of my Patreon supporters.

Yes, The logos.
really like the presentation of stoic ethics..according to me this is the best video on stoic ethics...

I already do several live chats monthly.
I see, that's great to hear only found this channel a few days ago.
great video
Thanks!
You're a really f@*king great teacher. I love f@*king listening to you man!!!....and this makes me curious, what do the stoics say about cussing?
Not much, really.
It has the potential to offend, and can easily become a sort of intemperance

That may be. Never found it particularly useful in my own weightlifting days myself.

I can't stop thinking that he's Jeffrey Lebowsky
Well, pour me a White Russian then!

Epictetus/Stoics has a lot of overlap with the psychological 'just world' theories and studies. Interesting...
Not when you read him, no

Of course not. What a weird thing to focus on, when you have the chance to ask a question of the presenter

He seems unable to make it explicit, concrete or logically structured. He rambles on and on.
He's a philosopher. Concrete is really not their key goal.
As Luke Skywalker would say : "Every word of what you just said... was wrong."
