    I love the Havoline commercial in the middle of the video, fun way to do a product placement.

    Solid video, but don't run your oil life down to zero! I change mine every 5k miles because it's not that much of a hassle and relatively inexpensive. It may also help the fuel mileage and make the engine last longer. Also, you should look into getting a Gold Plug magnetic drain plug. Every time I change my oil, the little magnet on the end of the plug has collected a small bit of fine metallic swarf that would otherwise be circulating in the engine. Just my thoughts...take it or leave it, but keep up the videos!

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree on the 5k interval. 👍

    How about some coupons, I could use some help, don't want it to cost as much as the dealership to do the oil change job.

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  ปีที่แล้ว

      To save some cash, you can go with Havoline PRO-DS. It's slightly cheaper and just as good (just doesn't have the bio products in it). Also Walmart often sells these 6 qt containers for cheap. Another bit of advice... buy OEM oil filters in bulk. Then you're good for years and they're often cheaper than buying individually.

    What do you use to store your old oil? I also have mineral oil from my bike (brake system), do you know i they can be mixed and disposed of together?

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I keep it in a 5 gallon jug and then recycle it when it fills up. Not sure about mineral oil. I mix motor and gear oil of course, but that's about it.

    • @wadeduvall7026
      @wadeduvall7026 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JasonExplainsThings I talked to my mom's bf who worked at the waste recycling center. Normally you can mix mineral oil (and almost all oils) but since in my case it's from bicycle hydraulic brakes it may be disposed of separately.

  • @scotw67

    Do you need a new rubber gasket each time? I assume the dealer carries this? I’d like to get one when I’m picking up my filter, if possible.

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From the instructions I read the answer is yes, replace it each time because it can get crushed or deformed… and then leak.
      Dealers can have it or we got it at a local auto parts store.

      @scotw67 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JasonExplainsThings thx! I’ve done two oil changes and haven’t replaced it, but I’ll do so the next time. Love your channel!!

      All the oil filters come with the o ring…it’s probably not needed, but it comes with the filter so you might as well change it

  • @Ubbenation
    @Ubbenation ปีที่แล้ว

    I did not know about changing the oil drain gasket and I've done 7 oil changes on my 2020 Z71 already. It's never leaked, but I guess it's always a good time to learn something new! However, the Amazon link says that part does not fit my 3.6, and the suggested parts are metal crush washers.

  • @wadeduvall7026
    @wadeduvall7026 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just did my oil change, thanks for the video! Interestingly my filter cap said 25 Nm but I'd already done 30 Nm (aka 22 ft lbs). I don't think 5 Nm is gonna break the bank though. 22 ft lbs might be from the older gen Colorados.

    If I had a house I would change my own oil. I can’t do it living in an apartment complex. They frown on that kind of thing in case of spillage.

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris and I shared an apartment in college and we did oil changes in a parking lot. Did get some funny looks from neighbors though.
      One suggestion… you could use an oil extractor and that way you wouldn’t have to drain from the bottom.

    You should add that there is a updated orifice tube for the oil filter, see bulletin dated 2/20,Bulletin # 19-NA-066. Old part #55577448, new #12696079, $15+/-. Old tube falls out and allows filter to collapse.

      @Steven Claggett Would this fix be in place on MY2020+ trucks? static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2020/MC-10173391-9999.pdf says up to 2019 for the bulletin so I'd assume so.
