All you need to do is follow the 💵... "fish" will *never* be included in the animal cruelty legislation because that would open up commercial fishing to legal citation and there's nothing "humane" about the way fish are harvested... even recreational angling might be shut down as imagine arguing that putting a metal hook through the face of a 🐕 or a 🐄 as not being animal cruelty 💯

@SHARKBYTES We Humans have True Hermaphrodites, and or Not Just Someone Born (because of the Operations at Birth you have to say born with, not has in so many cases) with Ambiguous Genitals (Pseudo Male & Pseudo Female Hermaphrodites 1 in 1200 to generally up to 1 in 2000 depending on the Population) but has One Ovary and One Retained Testicle, with the Testicle normally in Bad Bad Shape with all the Estrogen, Warmth and Pressure, but it only takes one Swimmer, so even the Most Putrid of Retained Testicles can pull of Self Insemination. 5% of people born Hermaphrodites (and or born with Ambiguous Genitals) are True Hermaphrodites, which every so often one gets themselves Pregnant, but we can't have any of that now can we, as Christians it just Blows up the Spot of the Virgin Mary so on any Sight of a Potential True Hermaphrodite they go in and Pull what's in there, which is generally Ovaries or Two Retained Testicles, all for the Christian Religion! 1 in 2500 Males by Autopsy Data have Wombs and Upper Vs (would have lower but they seal that off by sewing them up), it would be like 1 in 1800 but some Atrophy through Development while others are Removed via Operations, and just the Fact you know none of this, shows how the Blind Leads the Blind and you personally lack the Knowledge to be talking about anything like you are the Expert to even a Novice on just about any Subject...

Pessimism makes me wonder if the pregnancy was actually some kind of tumor or other medical complications that Ramer chose to ignore in favor of the marketability of a miracle pregnancy, and neglecting a proper diagnosis led to her dearh.
Even worse pessimism would be that they chose not to help her because they decided they were done with her. "We got our money, now we're spending it on her care without getting more from visits? Nah. Let's cut our losses here."

So I used to work at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and right before this story came out our swell shark had laid a fertilized egg. She was the only swell shark in the exhibit and the other sharks in there wouldn’t have been able to impregnate her. The only explanation was parthenogenesis. Like you said some species of sharks and rays can do this but it’s never been observed in swell shark. But when this real scientific discovery was happening along comes this stingray and now all eyes were on that! A freaking hoax out shined an actual marvel of science. Also our shark actually had the baby. A girl who hatched in Christmas Eve! I’ve been calling her shark Jesus.

Of course, anyone with a semi-scientific mind didn't think one of the male sharks got her pregnant, but the parthenogenesis idea certainly wasn't out of the realm of possibility. After initially hearing about it, I hadn't paid any attention to the story, so thanks to Kris for talking about it. 1. WOW! Our little community college gets a shout out in a TH-cam video! Crazy! Good on our Aquarium Science Director for reaching out.
    2. Our local Aquarium, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, tries its best to take amazing care of its animals and fish, and all were either born in captivity or declared un able to be realized. My husband works there, and my sister actually works at our community college with the director!
I wish there were more regulations around privately owned and profiting aquariums and zoos. I feel like if you’re going to open your doors to the public for money you need to first meet a lot of standards of care for both the animals and the patrons. Similarly to the whole Tiger King thing. Anyway, another amazing video and thanks for rounding up all the information, good to know what happened after all this fake news.

This reminds me of the horrific conditions of bears, etc., used as attractions in gas stations and various eateries in the 1950s and 60s. Once saw a poor bear who could barely move at a filling station. He sat curved over in his cage, but still rocked himself…it was awful. What I learned more from this is more the problems with people learning about science and education getting messed up through social media due to sensationalism - and how worrying that can be since lots of people use social media for education (especially when a lot of our current education systems currently need a lot of updates and some areas are underfunded). It's also worrying when the news media picked this up too, and that attempts to keep the misinformation down didn't work since social media is built on entertainment and education is a rare addition (this channel being one of the few legit educational content - but a majority of Internet users unfortunately gravitate towards sensationalism over education). :(

Personally I think there was a strong bias towards the stingray being pregnant from the start that created this situation. They wanted it to be true, so found what they wanted to see not what was there. And when reality threatened that dream, they pushed away anything that could ruin them until it wasn't possible anymore.

Something that I think a lot of people don't know is that Hendersonville North Carolina is not near the coast, it's in the Blue ridge mountains. It's just right outside of Asheville. So it was always kind of funny that there was this aquarium in downtown Hendersonville, a town known for beautiful mountains, black bears, and apples. The aquarium always had the sketchy nature to it to the point where I don't even want to call it an aquarium, let's be honest, it was just an overgrown fish shop. I had a sneaking suspicion that the aquarium was probably going under due to financial reasons, and this was a quick cash grab for them.

It's s cute little aquarium, they take in exotic pets that people can't care for anymore, but I wouldn't necessarily say that they're in the business of educating the public. It's a nice little distraction or an excursion for young kids with short attention spans that just want to look at fish, out see turtles being hand feed. But with tanks labeled with little to no information about their inhabitants, I wouldn't really expect to learn much.

  • @stargateMimhi
    @stargateMimhi 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

You see this play out a lot when small facilities suddenly find themselves shoved into social media limelight with no idea how to handle the attention. Small facilities like this, most of which are housing at least in part rescues or abandoned pets, rarely have the resources to deal with events like this (both the medical event and the social media event). As unfortunate as cases like this are we need smaller facilities both to accommodate all of these animals and to present animals that the larger zoos refuse to bother housing because they aren't as cost efficient as lions and elephants.
Misinterpreting tumours as a pregnancy is easy to do with small animals, especially fish, couple that with the extreme pressure of a social media explosion and you get tensions so high people get scared to acknowledge what happened.
As for the "censorship", it's safe to assume they were overloaded with attention and whatever social media manager they handled was just given generic instructions to block or ignore everything that contradicted whatever the aquarium had said in the past.

I definitely feel like they believed she was pregnant, and because of the question of how in the hell did this happen, instead of having vets dig deeper to see if it was truly a pregnancy, they just played it up till whatever condition it was unfortunately killed her. Seems like they were using her sickness to earn money. Which, if it's to help stingrays and other ocean life, cool, but if it was just to get money for their "aquarium" and tiktok famous then fuck them. I feel like too she's been gone for a while with how the updates stopped for a while. Poor Charlotte. I hope in the end it wasn't painful and she went peacefully.

Thank you for covering this- I had no idea the extent of the misinformation and I'm saddened by the state of the animal welfare there 😢

The story of Charlotte was so popular even in France I heard the news talk a bit about the stingray that got pregnant without a male.
I never heard them talk about ANYTHING afterward though.
My immediate thought had been pathogenesis or something similar. When I heard the hybrid story on internet I was...... Amused.
It's crazy to me that a nobody like me thought "yeah, nothing miraculous about that, it's a known phenomenon" and those people supposed to care for the ray and EDUCATE PEOPLE went "lol hybrid"

My gf makes much more beautiful and natural looking habitats for fish than that aquarium. Sad.

I personally don’t think there should be animals held in captivity, not wild ones anyway. Zoos in aquariums were really good and really educational back before the Internet when I was a kid when you didn’t have the opportunity to see these animals in their natural habitats but now we have the Internet and any child can go any animal and find its natural habitat, zoo, or aquarium, except to make money. Some zoos do a lot of work with conservation and working with endangered species and that’s fine but you don’t have to sell tickets to do that. You don’t have to make, and they certainly should not be trained to do any tricks!

Other than sea world the only "tricks" animals do in modern zoos and aquariums are natural behavior demonstrations (like cheetahs chasing something, birds flying, caracals jumping, ect.) Really simple stuff they do anyway to educate guests and medical exam training (opening their mouth, showing a certain body part, turning in a circle) again minor things that youd do at the doctor to make sure the animal is healthy cuz animals often hide illness and injuries till its too late
As for the money thing. Some zoos are fortunate enough to be free with a lot of funding from their local city or something but feeding all those animals isn't cheap and keepers and vets got bills to pay

@@ckm5702 just my opinion that animals should be free unless people intervene for conservation purposes

@Rebornation0712 zoos the world over have been key players in conservation for decades. Black rhino, Arabian oryx, California condor, amur leopard, prezwalski horse, bald eagle, blue iguana, Panamanian golden frog, scimitar horned oryx, piere david deer, island night lizard, peregrine falcon, Irabian lynx, Mexican red wolf, Tanzanian spray toad, all were completely wiped out in their native range at one point or close to it but have had a comeback thanks to breeding and rewinding programs by zoos. Not to mention less severely endagered species that have had increases, most notable pandas being the mascot of endagered species being upgraded from endagered to vulnerable. Not to mention most (least in more development first world countries) are completely non profit and most of the money raised is distributed to conservation projects around the world
There most deffinatly are shitty zoos out there (namely redneck roadside tourist traps or ones in poorer countries where animal welfare laws are minimal or non existant) and even some subpar habitats in otherwise good zoos but when done right can be massive players in healing the planet
