    I am actually really impressed the band made the connection between Jonny’s opioid use and his hearing loss in 2007... the connection wasn’t widely understood in the medical community until around 2012, with more research in 2018 and earlier this year finally making it more publicly known. I know this seems like a weird take away from that blog post but I work in opioid treatment so it caught my attention.

    This was great, dude.
    As an addict in recovery now for almost ten years, i can't describe how hard opiates can take ahold of you if you're a myopic, depressed, intelligent person. Because, deep down, you know that you shouldn't be living like this but literally the ONLY things that can make you feel anything are the drugs and when you get on stage and collect the adoration of fans. You yearn to feel something every day and to connect with people but nothing does it, outside of those things and everything else falls to the wayside.
    Its a nightmare and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, and believe me, that shit is so powerful it really CAN capture anyone the same way it captured me.
    Anyways, apologies for the after-school special, I appreciate the video and respect the work you've put in to them

    In 2011, I was working on Warped and this gentleman was a constant topic during the tour for many reasons. My personal experience with him is as follows: On the Arizona date, always one of the most brutal dates of the entire tour, I walked to catering hoping for any morsel of leftover food as I missed my opportunity to grab something. I walked into the room as they were tearing down the lunch setup, asking anyone on staff for leftover food. Also in this room was JC, laughing with several other people (mostly catering staff) gathered around a TV watching the movie ‘You Got Served’. I left the room briefly to follow a staff member who was able to find a shiny red apple, and when I walked back in the previous room JC was, I saw him now alone watching ‘You Got Served’ by his lonesome. The guy I saw laughing just 90 seconds prior, was now quiet and stoic. I didn’t interact with him verbally, but I saw what appeared to be a very sad and lonely man, watching this movie and deep in thought. I walked away from that moment feeling kind of bad for him, as that felt kind of like a weird summary of his career. Brief moments of friends and happiness, followed by loneliness and no smiles in sight. I never saw him again after that day. That apple was scrumptious as well.

    • @ReanuKeaves1
      @ReanuKeaves1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      idk I don't follow him, I'm merely talking about the block of time this video portrays him. During this time, he was a piece of shit and no past experiences excuse him for those actions. Admittedly, I am a very devoted fan of Jonny's art while highly critical of his being. This video struck the perfect balance of praising him artistically (some of my favorite clips of his performances were shown! + got the context around some of these concerts) and holding him accountable for really shitty behavior. Your analysis of every one of his albums was completely on point. Overall, very glad I watched this and excited for part two.
    To me, Children of Divorce is so powerful in how blatantly toxic it is, but confirms so much of what we already know about Jonny: he's a pretty abusive addict. Other than that, I would have still considered DBM II to be at his peak, everything after it is going down the slope though. Intrigued to see your commentary on that album and Slaves.

    One of the best moments of my life was in 2008 a couple days before leaving for college, I went to see dgd playing with a static lullaby. This was shortly after the death star album came out, and me and my two buddies ran into Mingus before hand and went and smoked a bowl in their tour van (it was incredible how fucking tight he was after smoking.) After they played we saw them outside and asked if they wanted to smoke a blunt and they were like “fuck yeah” so my two boys went to roll it up at the car and I sang “Woe” by Say Anything with Kurt Travis and a couple of the dudes from A Static Lullaby in their tour van (absolutely incredible experience, it still feels like a dream) everyone was super chill. The boys came back, we smoked a fat one right on the street in Albany. Will Swan didn’t say much. He kind of just puffed and hung out. I turned to him and I was like “Will, what happened with Jonny?” All he said was “he’s just a fucking asshole.” And that’s was that.

      DGD certainly has an interesting story. They were underdogs through out most of there career despite having a unique sound to them. Now they are the leaders of the genre. Back in the day when blogs ran the music and their first album dropped, hardly anyone was talking about it even though it was head and shoulders above their peers. They got a bump in popularity when JC got kicked out but it was all about the controversy and not the music. That would be the story for them until Tillian joined and they were finally being appreciated for their music.

    • @Washanuga
      @Washanuga 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@mudkips8399 Ehh, can't say I agree with that. DBM put them on the map and Jonny quickly became one of the most well-known voices in the scene. They did pretty well during the Kurt years (Uneasy Hearts being their best-selling song on itunes still). Then DBM2 and Blue Dream was a hit. Then they finally found a good frontman to stick around and swancore is in full effect.
      They were never underdogs, it's just that with all the line-up changes and drama, nobody was ever certain of their future or what would become of them. I started listening to DGD when DBM came out and to say nobody was talking about it is patently false. "bump in popularity when JC got kicked" this doesn't make sense. JC is a huge reason why they gained popularity so quickly. That's why it was a big deal when he was kicked. Otherwise, why would anyone have cared? They go hand-in-hand. Your take is bad tbh.

    • @mudkips8399
      @mudkips8399 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Washanuga That was my experience. DBM came and went, and with what attention they got, it was just a lot of "yet another sing/scream" band. With their unique traits being overlooked and people hating hating Jon Mess' vocals. Huge sites "scene" like absolutepunk barely covered it. People were way more in interested in other bands at the time. Metalcore bands, and bands like ADTR and PTV were getting way more attention.
      And yes Jonny getting kicked out did more for the band than him being in, in the early years. People loved the controversy and especially because it had such a terrible blog detailing why he was kicked out. Uneasy Hearts did okay, but the entirety of Happiness did more for them and got them on Warped.
      I'm not saying they were some unknown band. They were above a sea similar but nameless bands at the time, but they weren't leaders then either. Looking back more closely I would say DBM2 got them much more recognition, but by then people had also had more time to reflect on the past material plus Jonny was also with Emarosa at the time which. So to correct myself, DBM2 was when they started leading the pack, but Tillian still brought them to another level.

    I’m not even 1/4 of the way through and I am stunned at the amount of research you’ve done here. Great stuff.

    There are few bands that nailed the dichotomy like Dance Gavin Dance, Saosin, Alexisonfire, Sleeping with Sirens, Emarosa and the final boss, Isles & Glaciers. I would support someone that tried to argue the case for BMTH in there, but ultimately dismiss them because having heard every single one of these bands live, Anthony Green, Kellin, Dallas, Jonny, Kurtis and Tilian all have those voices that make your heart ache without aid. Oliver just isn't as naturally gifted of a singer. No one does it better than Jonny, and I honestly believe if he hadn't gotten so caught up, he'd have a career like Dallas or Anthony do where he'd still record with DGD but he'd also have a more solo career. Isles and Glaciers is such a tease because it is the perfect culmination of these minds meeting and creating magic. I still think strawberry swisher is one of the greatest musical threads ever. I get so excited for your videos to nerd out about music I love, even when it's about the sucky shit the people that made it did. Just do me a favor, never ruin deftones for me, ok? Love your channel!

    During the Jonny's solo album part, you missed to point out that Tillian Pearson (current DGD vocalist) was playing on his band. You can see him playing guitar and singing on the video

    I watched all 3 parts and he does a fantastic job. So if you're sitting here being like, "fuck I have to watch 3 hours of content about Jonny Craig", it's all worth the watch. If you gotta, space out when you watch it if your attention span is bad, but me and my dad watched this and love this. you have gained yourself 2 new fans. Well done man! :)
