"Work is inherently good" was a meme that served us well when there was no other option. But I think that as automation takes more and more of the drudgery of life off our shoulders we can cut back the work day and expand the "idol" classes, who can write books and essays for a living, or even just spend more time on hobbies and family.
I don't think we were quite there in his day though. He had the privilege of being born rich and therefore didn't need to struggle to earn enough money to survive like most working class men of his time and place did, but things are different now.
