Lara is an amazing talent. The fact that she would even attempt to cover Streisand is one thing but she didn't do it under the protection of a studio she did it live in front of thousands of people and pulled it off in the greatest of ways. She's amazing. Her voice is the 8th wonder of the world. Also in this concert, she took on performing live Mariah's Vision Of Love and Whitney's I Will Always Love You and crushed them both to another level.

Her parents were in audience that night celebrating their 30th Anniversary.
Can you imagine the pride her Papa felt for his daughter that night?? Just amazing.

And for her, knowing how much her parents had sacrificed for her dream... And knowing part of that dream was to sing Yentl... Then to sing "Papa watch me FLY!" It gives me shivers! I've always wondered, at the end when she gestures into the crowd if she's actually gesturing directly towards her parents just before she sings that last line. The romantic/softy/poetic part of me really hopes she is.

They are both performing but not to the same thing. Barbara is explaining to a spirit to the ghost who might disapprove of her actions. Laura is pefor😢to a disappointed father who may still be living and begging to be understood.

It is odd that such a talented Story Singer never got into a musical theater play because each time I watch her live she is body and soul into the song specific character. In short she is a theatrical Singer of brilliant artistry.

Lara is one of the best singer in the world. There is no doubt about it.
It is only sad that the world is discovering her 20 years too late.
Do not miss this one: Lucy Thomas , 17 years old in 2021. Her cover of "Hallelujah" got 5 millions views in less than 4 month... it cannot be bad. I think you will enjoy.

I grew up listening to barbra’s version of yentl, and if anything id say the two versions of these songs (papa, can you hear me/a piece of sky) are very similar. When i see this, i see lara having fun, fangirling over barbra who she lovingly calls ‘l’imperatrice’ :-) They both have great resonance in their range, which makes their voices so beautiful to listen to.

It's just a damn shame in the United States that hardly nobody knows her. Mix Barbara, Celine, and Cher, with the stage performance worthy of an Oscar, and you get Lara Fabian. To truly understand how great she is, just listen to other (professional) singers try and cover her songs.....only then will you really appreciate how great this woman is.

This concert is from 1998. It followed her 3rd studio album, "Pure", launched in September 1996 in Canada and June 1997 in France. Should I remember correctly, you'll find the "crazy smile" in "Je suis malade" (From Lara with love concert), near the end, when she says "C'est ça! je suis malade"...

It's funny because the original never affected me at all and the first time I heard this one I damn near cried. Which shocked the hell out of me because that's not usual for me. I chalk it up to both more life lived and the effect Fabian's voice has on my neural net.

Hey, thank you for this reaction. I loved it. Just an add: there're more performances of her singing this medley in tldifferents dates and places. One is my favorite, it's live in 2004, she held the last note ( D5 ) in chest voice for 18 seconds, with an INCREDIBLE resonance. It's shocking!

She shows more vulnerability more emotion and it flows with her voice, Barbara Striesand has super technique but sometimes misses the mark and though she has some emotion ie shaking her head and looking up she doesn't have that vulnerability that this woman has. Love Funny girl!

Yes they express this a little different and I'm glad that Lara make her own version of it and not tried to copy Barbara. Even if she would have tried it would still sound different. The arrangement and her voice is different. I prefer Lara's voice, her timbre and depth suits my taste more.
But both are amazing in their own way. Interesting reaction. Thanks!

Here's a live fancam performance of hers to add to your list. You can see her speaking to the audience for the first minute and then singinging a bluesy French song while seated. Another electric "totally in character" performance. She's a chameleon. Being live unleashes her Beast Mode. 🤣 th-cam.com/video/-85T-iR7dfc/w-d-xo.html

I hear what you're saying about the difference between Barbra and Lara's performances. And I was trying to figure out why that might be other than the nature of their voices if, in fact, there was an outside reason. And I came to the conclusion that in Barbara's version we, the audience, have been experiencing the story with her through the movie. We see the scenery, the costumes, the lighting, we've been transported to that era. But so has Barbra. And she's had multiple takes to get it just right. And that can make a huge difference in delivery. You hear a lot from actors in period pieces that as soon as they put on the corset or the waistcoat that their posture changes and all of a sudden they're there in the era.
Lara doesn't have that "advantage", if you will. She's wearing a very fashionable 1990s suit on a big stage with her band in a pretty big venue in modern day Montreal. Everything has to be in her mind so clearly that she can invite us into that experience with her.
Barbra is incredibly gifted at what she does. And still singing into her 70s and I really like and enjoy her music. But as you've mentioned several times, and I've said it before, too, opinions are subjective and, well, subject to change.
For me, what makes me enjoy this performance over Barbra's is the way Lara draws me into grief and fear and sadness with her. Barbra hasn't had that affect on me. I know she's had it on others but not me. Lara reaches inside my chest takes ahold of my heart and waits until the time she chooses to squeeze and make me cry, even weep. Even when I've heard her sing a song over and over she will have me sniffing and reaching for a tissue or my shirt sleeve to wipe away my tears.
So for me, I would choose to listen to Lara's rendition over Barbra's.

I believe that Lara Fabian was influenced by the version of the duet by Michel Legrand , the original composer/song writer , with Ginette Reno at the Montréal Jazz Festival in 1986. Unfortunately the conversion from the video file to digital have butchered the synchronisation but you still can find it at : th-cam.com/video/qhgSVrOwVWM/w-d-xo.html .

It is true that Lara Fabian wanted to show what she was capable of at the beginning of her career.
A lot of people have taken into not liking her very much at the time because of it (some people used to say she was yelling instead of singing. I never agreed with them, or let's say that in that case, I would love to be able to yell like Lara Fabian).
Dimash has that in common with Lara Fabian : he has incredible technical skills and a very powerfull voice, but he still tries to impress people.
Anyways, since then, she has gained confidence and now she is more in the emotion and the story telling then the vocal demo and that is all for the best :-)
