Had the Olympics not been boycotted and in a different country the outcome would have been very different. She benefited from a boycotted Olympics, the event being held in the US and being overscored. She was not as good as you think she is.
I was six years old watching so excited when she did a gold vault olympics 1984 . My mom always kept my hair short and used to tell me i looked like her. Good memories

Wow I just a couple weeks old during these Olympics. It’s fun watching the different games on TH-cam. I must say watching the commercials was fun. Man long distance phone calls were a problem back in the day. Though it wasn’t all that long ago when it changed. I remember back in 2010 how we wanted to make mobile to mobile calls.
It's just a random thought, but Mary Lou Retton looks like a normal teenager back then. Yes, her height makes her look smaller, but she's just like a normal teen back in 1984.
Sehr spannend....
Mary Lou, truly America‘s sweetheart, a „golden one“ we shall add. She aged gracefully, and is truly a symbol of American sportsmanship, dedication and athletic success. Inspiring still, a classy All American Athlete Lady, pure class.
Mary Lou was the one who went to DC with Steven Penny to lobby against the Safe Sports Act, which was being passed to protect children from sexual abuse in sports after the Nassar Scandal. She also unconditionally supported USA Gymnastics, Steve Penny and her disgusting coaches(the abusive Karolyis)!!Not once did she support the survivors .In fact she was on the USAG board all those years when Nassar was abusing gymnasts!!
YA I DO REMEMBER THIS SHE KICKED BUTT...in the floor routine flying through the air i was like nineteen and trying out for the mile run or something.....it was like watching nadia ...she was amazing....it never happened again
1984 olympics was the GREATEST olympics ever and almost every event not only gymnastics had a duo battling it out! Never again will there be this awesome time, feel, mentality, excellence. Soviet boycott didnt matter cause they were all doped which was the sports decision to not send the athletes, because drug testing had become stricter than ever before with brand new testing available! These were the greatest say their names in deepest reverence
Already before 1984 sports experts in the West were assuming that was only one part of the issue, the other was maybe more important, namely that the anti-doping tests at 84 LA were able to detect every substance the Soviets and East Germans were using, they all would have been caught, would have led to huge international issue, so good they didn't go
You can go and watch US, BRIT, GER, FRENCH TV reports from 1984 all stating that every known doping substance that communist countries were using would be detected and that the assumption in the sports world was that the boycott was due to that fact. Just imagine the entire swimming team of East Ger would've been sent home. I myself also thought the political tit for tat reaction was the only one until I started watching news reports from the time
I’ll never get over her. When I was 11yrs old she was a Goddess to me. Do you think most people realize that she went from spinning clockwise then switched to counterclockwise in mid air on that last vault?
Gosh, I had no idea! You very likely saw her as a Goddess to you because of how fast she ran and then did her mid-air spinning!! She could have been easily as fast as lighting...Especially during the 2nd vault-run she did.
@@StormOfMaat Do you want to learn how to run really, really fast...? Charge towards a vault then hesitate after it's' too late to stop. That was the first time I was ever on the ground UNABLE TO BREATHE IN AIR until I almost turned blue. *That was a pivotal moment in my life. I had a decision to make. *All, or nothing??
she losses to Szabo in this final (individual vault final, which this is- not the AA final from 2 nights before)- pity the video wastes 2/3 of it's time on the judging delay for the Chinese girl. Would have been nice to see Szabo's 2 vaults.
can someone explain to me the difference between a quervo and a handspring front half. What is the difference, why mechanically and why is it harder? It looks nicer but I have never really understood it.

ThePaveleck in a Cuervo, the twist is early right off of the horse. Equally as difficult. I would say the the only difference is with a Cuervo you have more time to spot the landing.

Imagine being a millionaire, not believing in medical insurance (gasp, too socilized!) But then begging for money to pay her hospital bill....while having a net worth of 2-3 million dollars.
Something tells me Bela was especially busy with the backroom deals here. Hence MLR not being deducted for putting her hand down on optional floor so she'd still be in it for the AA.. And in return, Kati Szabo "won" vault despite these jumps clearly being inferior to Mary Lou's. Wtf was that second vault??? Cathy says it's a Tsuk full in piked position... If you enjoyed this video....I have so much more gymnastics and Olympics in my Other Sports Section and Olympics Section of my webpage at www.imasportsphile.com
Yeah, that isn't right to me either. I mean, aside from the fact that the landing was bad, you add the knee down and that's really bad. It was bad execution. She landed that way because she didn't get high enough on the vault to push off. Looks like they put that spring board way far back. I wonder why they did that? It seems to me if it was closer, she could have gotten her hands high enough. Or maybe if it was too close her hands would have been too high.
Typical European attitude. If your athlete doesn’t win you complain about unfair judging. Guess you fobs forget that at every other Olympics you were given imperfect routines a ten while many other more deserving athletes were ignored by judges who were in your pockets. Mary Lou had better performances throughout this competition and EARNED her gold. No amount of churlish, bigoted whining on your part will change that.

Good thing your opinion doesn’t matter. The countries who boycotted would have tainted these games by having the judges in their pockets, making it impossible for anyone but themselves compete for victory. Ever wonder how the Soviet Union won so much? It’s because they cheated by having control of the judges- NOT because they were better. The one overrated here is YOU- as a human being.

Susan Keating lol shut up and stop complaining. you have a right to an opinion and they have a right to call you out for having such a dumb opinion. so entitled and demanding. if you don’t like it, don’t watch it.

That's not very nice. I don't believe Retton deserved to win the AA, I sincerely believe that Szabo clearly won, but was cheated by corrupt judges/officials. I don't blame Retton for the USA's fascistic fervor during the 1984 Summer Olympics.
In your case I’d say you could qualify as an ape- or a chimpanzee- because your attitude is certainly not in any way human like. What a bigoted and hateful comment.

Make it make sense.. But MLR had already been gifted the one that mattered most, let's be real 🤷♂️.
Gifted? You mean Szabo fell on purpose on her dismount on UB team optionals?
@@shane802 no but the judges sure did ignore Retton's fall on optional floor on purpose..

Judging always differs for the Olympians.
Judging always differs at every event where there are different judges....as consistancy is certainly not the norm and never will be.
OMG, the faults were so much easier then.

China was extremely sloppy 9.55 ?
I was at a fair 8.80 and then...9.55....whaaaat?
Yeah, that isn't right to me either. I mean, aside from the fact that the landing was bad, you add the knee down and that's really bad. It was bad execution. She landed that way because she didn't get high enough on the vault to push off. Looks like they put that spring board way far back. I wonder why they did that? It seems to me if it was closer, she could have gotten her hands high enough. Or maybe if it was too close her hands would have been too high.
Good but no Svetlana boginskya

Those judges are ignorant. Paid by someone to delay like that.
@@saragrant9749 Good morning my dear and pretty Sarah..Eucatarina..Zabou....is not a Moroccan athlete....as you know perfecly....she is from Romania.....please....do not reply an other time if you do not....see or know...who....comment.....Zabou was perfect and she was the number one during this Olympic time.....Have a nice and peaceful day......

Mary Lou was overrated. She never would have won if this competition was held outside of the US and other nations did not boycott.
@@saragrant9749 Lmao. You triggered because I stated my opinion? She was not even the most talented in LA. She was over scored. If you visit gymnast forums, you will see many people share this opinion. ✅
@@foodculture6355meh. She was doing the hardest routines. If Russia had been there she may not have won…but we all know all Russian athletes were doping pretty much forever.
Awful quality film, how can you watch it when it is shaking nearly all the time? Spoilt the whole thing.
Lady. The video is from 1984. For God's sake, what do you expect? I swear, people like you just have to complain complain complain. Have you nothing better to do than whine about FREE CONTENT someone is GIVING you? Don't even see the shaking you're on about. Maybe that's you.
Susan Keating lol shut up and stop complaining. you have a right to an opinion and they have a right to call you out for having such a dumb opinion. so entitled and demanding. if you don’t like it, don’t watch it.
@@susankeating8678 wow, insults and profanity. So, you're hateful, bitter, rude, AND classless. No wonder you spend all your time complaining online. I'm sorry you're so unhappy. I hope things get better for you.
Simone Biles needs to take lessons off of Mary Lou Retton. Simone Biles lacks the grace and the fluidity and she needs to study Mary Lou
Today's female gymnasts are much older and lack the flexibility these girls had.
Parece hombre hormonado. Hoy día ya no se sabe. Siempre han hecho trampas en todos niveles...
What is w the spitting in her hand 🤚🤢
With today BS she can pass as a boy or a it
That's not very nice.
I don't believe Retton deserved to win the AA, I sincerely believe that Szabo clearly won, but was cheated by corrupt judges/officials.
I don't blame Retton for the USA's fascistic fervor during the 1984 Summer Olympics.
Wow, what un utterly hateful and unnecessary slur.
True lol
In your case I’d say you could qualify as an ape- or a chimpanzee- because your attitude is certainly not in any way human like. What a bigoted and hateful comment.
