Johnny vs. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

  • Time to journey back to the Super Nintendo with the next game in the Zelda Marathon. A Link to the Past, similar to games like Super Mario World, introduced more than just a graphical update. It's considered to be one of the best Zelda games in the franchise, and whether or not that still holds up today is what we're going to find out. Time hasn't been too kind to Zelda 1 or Zelda 2, but will things look up from here on?

    Link's epic rivals:
    Ganon, the classic, overpowered hog.
    Majora, the demon
    The MOON, The Moon
    Dark Link, the shadow
    Jerry, the Jerry.

      Of course you might be right, but that's what I thought _as a kid_. I thought that the links, zeldas and ganons in every Zelda couldn't be the exact same person. I didn't know to think about recurring incarnations and parallel timelines back then. :D

    • @haruhisuzumiya6650
      @haruhisuzumiya6650 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Moshugaani but that timeline was probably when OOT was developed. all we had was LTTP AST- LOZ - ZII: AOL so before OOT the Zelda series was on the "Downfall" timeline which I suspect was Miyamoto's "original" timeline Link dying from fighting with Ganon was just a good "measure"
      sealing war - LTTP- BS Zelda: AST - LOZ - Zelda II: AOL was timeline 0, Ocarina of Time was "chronologically" first game... but it might have been a "child" "adult" time line. originally or an alternate universe.

    • @esmooth919

    • @micahlindley7515
      @micahlindley7515 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was confused by the Zelda timeline, but not because of the Multiverse elements (which I don't find confusing). It was the fact there were two timelines after link wins in OOT.
      I now perfectly understand and comprehend the Zelda timeline.

    I was an 80s kid and grew up with the nes, and surprisingly going back and picking up retro games I've found that I played most of the nes library thanks to places like superstar, Hollywood and mr video. After the nes I moved onto the master system, then sega Genesis and stuck with sony ever since. The Wii U reintroduced me to Nintendo and now I have been picking up most of their systems andgames that I missed, thanks to some awesome retro game stores in my area. My stepbrother had an snes when it released but I largely ignored it. I've been playing the snes for the past month and I have to admit that I missed out on a lot. The legend of Zelda is still my favorite in the franchise probably because of nostalgia but getting an snes in 2017 and playing through its library for the first time takes me back to the 90s. I was going to buy a one x but decided on an snes and nes instead. You never can go wrong with the originals.

    I find this game, while still good, actually didn't age entirely gracefully. Compared to later Zelda games - which have a clearer idea on whether they want to be a linear story (Twilight Princess) or a wide-open adventure (Breath of the Wild) - A Link to the Past tries to blend a linear story with open game design, but ends up not putting _quite enough_ focus on either side.
    Hence why I feel it's _clearly_ outdone by some later games - very specifically and directly so by A Link Between Worlds.

    • @nixxxon18
      @nixxxon18 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Didnt age gracefully? Are you kidding??? Its from 1992, tell me one single game that has aged better than this.
      Ocarina of time for example has aged awfully bad compared to this. This feels nice to play still today, and the graphics still look nice aswell even though the resolution is something like 640x480, which is an incredible feat

    • @AniGaAG
      @AniGaAG 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nixxxon18 It's simply the game's structure that is a halfway compromise between linearity and openness. They didn't know yet how to fully embrace either side - simply because A Link to the Past isn't the _culmination_ of Zelda design, it's the _foundation_ for it. I see it in the same light as Super Mario 64 - an immensely important game that set the ground rules for ages to come, but _absolutely naturally and expectedly_ didn't perfect its craft yet and has been outdone since.

    • @nixxxon18
      @nixxxon18 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AniGaAG being more or less open or more or less linear is not that important to determine how good a game is. And as you said it is somewhere in between, I think its perfect as it is. It is neither too simple not too complicated, I think it IS the culmination of zelda core design, most modern zeldas are based on it, just with different variations

    • @AniGaAG
      @AniGaAG 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    12:11 THANK YOU!!! I just played this game on the switch online and that room SUCKS!!! 😡😡😡
    That being said, this game is great. I’d love to see it get a full, modern remake similar to what they’re doing with Links Awakening. The games aged a bit in certain aspects, but with some modern touch ups it could be spectacular

    The game design in this game is SOOO GOOD! The dungeons are brilliant, and don't go on for too long like Twilight Princess' do, the overworld was SO well crafted, there was so much to do, the music was bad-ass, the items are brilliant, the bosses were epic, the NPCs were alive, and there's SOO many little things put into this game that just make it that much better... So why is it that I have such a hard time liking this game?!

      Uru19861 oh, well you see ever since this game Nintendo decided to pull a little prank and make it so that if you attack a chicken (named "Cuckoo" in the Zelda Universe) for too long then it will summon an army and HUNT YOU DOWN. so..don't hurt the poultry.

    I could never get far into this game, it's just not interesting to me. I think the biggest factor for this game is the nostalgia, I played later 2D Zelda games before this one, so it's just kinda redundant and somewhat inferior to games like Minish Cap. I'm guessing if you play the games that improved on this formula, you'll just be bored with the original or maybe it's just me.

      OMGG GGG ALttP was the very first Zelda game I ever played, it practically started the Zelda formula and set up the backstory of Ganon the Sacred Realm/Golden Land and the Master sword which future Zelda games added on. No one can deny its influence regardless of their personal opinions of it.

      because you were alone in the adventure, you discover things on your own, and from being an child to be the hyrule heroe felt so good. This is my favorate zelda game because it had no bullshit fairy telling you what to do. You could choose what dungeon to do in diferent order, it got an kickass music, and most important the gameplay is a masterpiece.Dont get me wrong, other zelda games are cool, but dont age well as A link to the past does.

    that game was so great. packed with full of stuff and hidden areas to explore. it was not too easy, not too hard and the time shifting part has never been there before in a video game if i'm right. it left the first two zelda games in the dust and set standards til today.

    I have the gba version and had a friend that had it, too, so we did beat the Four Swords to get the bonus stuff in the main game. The Hurricane Spin side-quest is easy but long, especially trying to find a red ruppee drop, and the bonus dungeon at the end is fairly challenging. I say fairly because the mini-bosses are just 4 bosses you face earlier in the game with no real differences but the dungeon boss is a challenge. I can beat the game 100% including the bonus content in a little over 8 hours. And the best part is being able to restart the game without deleting the save file once you've beaten Ganon.

    This game was really one of my favorite Zelda games. Neither the secrets there was little or no clue to from the NES, nor the nagging and (especially later on) hand-holding exposition fairies of later games. Bombable walls were (usually) cracked, you got subtle hints on where to go, each dungeon had one general tip that was useful much of the way, but not much you could figure out on your own. And this Link is way stronger, in the hands of the same player, than the NES one, and he faces awesome baddies to match. If you did have to seek out secrets, you'd survive a lot longer. And did you hear that music?!? I might even start calling stuff "the greatest thing since cracked walls"!
