    Today after a long road to recovery, I can fast walk 10K and breathing heavy at the end. Today, I'm going to slowly start running 1K then more every week in my journey. Wish me luck y'all!

I started to do Park run weekly and eventually ran a pb of 28:20. I run 5k between 29 and 32 minutes depending on the day and the course. I am moving to 10 kms regularly now. My pb is 1:04. Hi there, I'm a 67 yr old female (granny) and have recently done my first run ever. My two goals were a) to finish it and if I did that b) not be last. I really hoped I would be able to run OK as I had been practicing and jogging now and then. As it turns out I did it in 32.5mins and was 80th out of about 115 other runners. So I was pretty pleased with that although I should mention that the course was on tarmac and flat apart from a bit of a slope at the end of the two circuits. However, I didn't do a warmup as I got confused about the start time and also didn't realise how important that is. Also my running shoes were for trail running, not road running.
    So now I'm mad crazy to do better next time. Although I'm not sure I can 'run' any faster than that time.

      I got my dad into running and he started in his 60s. He continued to get better for several years until an injury set him back and he put the sport aside. This is both an optimistic tale and one of caution. Basically - you may be 67, but you're new to this so you've still got potential to improve for sure. That being said: go easy on yourself since as my father would say "you're no spring chicken" and give yourself plenty of recovery. Above all, enjoy the ride. You're doing just fine

Most important thing I've learnt is to listen to my body and thereby avoid injury. That's encouraging ! I started running in October 2020 after a break of over 10 years following a back injury. By run #8 I was up to 10k in 58 minutes and ran the first 5k is 27:50. Yesterday (run 9) I ran 3k in under 15 minutes but had no idea whether that was good or bad. I think I could do 5k in 25 minutes which for a 62 year old seems ok. My general fitness is high thanks to cycling - over 6000km in 2020 and my weight is 57 kg which is a big help.

      I got my father in to running around your age (he's late 70's now) and he would have loved to have been running in the 25's. He was winning age group categories around here with 27-28 minute times unless that one guy who could run the 25's showed up. My only caution for you - which is for everyone - is not to try and break your record every day or even every week. It's tempting when you are gaining fitness back, but it's also a recipe to end up overworked and potentially headed for injury. In short - be patient and enjoy the ride! (If you aren't already).

    Interesting video. I like the positive spirit, this is what running is about - a place for everybody and anybody, no matter the age, experience or fitness. I've been running for 13 years quite consistently, but in 2024 increased the duration of my runs by quite a lot. My longest run before 2024 was 15.5 k and anything beyond that felt completely impossible. Now, I ran four half marathons this year. Really proud of this leap after having a set running volume for so many years. I run around 120-150 km a month now, up from up to 50 km a month previously. My pb 5 k time is still from 2020 tho with 23'19 (this year 23'27). Hit my pb 10 k time this year with 51'49 and managed one sub-2h half marathon. I would like to improve my 5k time and 10 k time still (to below 50 min would be great) but I wonder how much room for improvement I have since I'm 38 and have already been running for a while. Not sure when age comes into play more and more... But even if I cannot improve on the times, I'm just happy to run.

      Depends on the event how competitive that time will be, but for most random charity 5ks I'd say 25 minutes would put you in the top 1/3rd as an estimate. From there it just depends on how important finishing sooner/higher ranked is to you.

    I used to run 18:18 in high school and did about 50 miles a week. I'm 28 now, was feeling pretty bad after training for two months and only running 27 minutes. I'm overweight though and am doing intermittent fasting as-well. At least now I know I'm above average and my idea of where I should be at is unrealistic. My goal is to run a sub 4 hour marathon so I'm maximizing low intensity volume. I'm running about 30 to 50 miles at 10:20 to 11:36 pace on all runs. Whenever something doesn't feel right I take about 4 days to fully recover. That's 50% of 5k pace to determine aerobic threshold runs. Coros pace watch is helping me with overtraining too. Really hope I can trim the 5k and marathon pace, I'm literally at 5H 30M marathon. It's fairly overtraining just to run 5Hs so I haven't re tried my marathon pace yet, don't think I'm there yet.

      Hey John - really I'd like to share some words of encouragement. You've got a solid 5k time from high school, but you know as you mentioned that you were in a different kind of shape then. The good news: genetically you've got the goods to go sub 4 for sure. The tough news: you already know this - it's going to take some time to slim down and give your muscles a chance to rebuild, often this is two separate phases (losing fat then gaining muscle). The other good news: you're 28 and getting back to it. Though it may not seem like it you've got a pretty long runway ahead of you to hit that time. Hopefully this doesn't push you towards procrastination but you've got at least ~7 years if not longer. Stick to your process and let the time come to you through consistency and perseverance.

      At your stage of the game (just starting) it's all about patience. Spend your first 6 months at least just building mileage and that alone should see your time improve. Going slow and building that base will ironically help you go faster. From there you can start throwing in some faster stuff but keep it to once a week. Check out my videos on periodization and how to build a training schedule to get some more involved thoughts.

    If the distribution is skewed even a bit, the average will be skewed as well. What you are referring to where the distribution is at it’s peak is called the mode.

    • @Solpri
      @Solpri  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are technically correct, though I do address this by mentioning several times that if the numbers change then the average changes as well. With the "perfect bell curve" model used as the graph example - the average and mode are the same since that's how the curve is drawn. I don't have the full data sets from Healthline to try and delineate fully if they chopped off X% of their outliers to attempt to normalize their numbers or if they had a bunch of very fast people show up or very slow people and then recorded the average times from there, etc. The suggestion of ranges is backed up by the data from Healthline, but is somewhat my personal experience getting out into public road races and seeing finishing times. Average, or the mode if you want to be particular, of school races will tend to be much quicker than publicly held road races as I have discussed with other younger commenters wondering how their school races hold up. Answering the question "is my time good?" which is by its nature a subjective question is basically impossible. However, using a rough average range is a good enough starting point for the conversation since preciseness of determining whether you are over the mode or the average is largely irrelevant because the average will tend toward the mode in large enough data sets.

    • @Solpri
      @Solpri  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your kind words from your other comment. As far as how long, the unfortunate reality is there's too many variables for me to tell you for sure. What I can say is being consistent will get you as far as you can go. I've known someone who couldn't run one lap on the track become collegiate champion in the mile just months later. I've also know people who can't get past 12 minute miles. Both are generally exceptions to the rule. From what you've said though you're just starting out so you should have a long runway ahead of you and you're young so you've got time on your side. So how long will it take? Probably shorter than for most people, but longer than we usually want since we want stuff now, ha. Keep building your mileage slowly and increasing your aerobic capacity, that 5k will naturally get easier and easier.

Now I’ve added a fourth day. On Sundays and Mondays, I run 20 minutes (2.3km). On Wednesdays, 30 minutes (3.5km). And on Fridays, 5K (40-50 minutes). • @Solpri
      @Solpri  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ninjashoyo9086 Absolutely. The biggest theme you'll get from my videos is this: consistency breeds results. If you did just that routine and only that, but stick with it for 6 months, 12 months, etc. You'll notice a change over time of your aerobic capacity. It's never "easy" so to speak, but they will get more comfortable on average, over time. Eventually you should reach a kind of plateau with that mileage then you'll have to decide do you keep trying to do more or are you satisfied where you are.

    Age 24, Male. I did my first 5K at 29:50 (elapsed time, moving time was 28:00). I guess it is alright.

    I tried to run a 5k today... I did 3.66km in 24 minutes...is that even an okay time?

      Since you didn't have a full 5k run you've gotta convert to pace and project. Divide your time by your distance then multiple by 5 to get a projected 5k time. It will likely be slightly slower than the projected time if you aren't yet able to complete 5k, but this should give you a ballpark. How does that time compare to my suggestions in the video?

    I'm just built different. Haven't ran a 5k in over 20 years and haven't even attempted a jog in over 10 years and went out and ran a 24:27 5k. I'm trying to get a sub 20 in just 2 months of training....Right now injured both calves and haven't trained in over a week. Guess maybe I'm not built different

    Freshmen year 21:36 in cross country. Probably sounds great to some people but awful to others. I was slightly below average for boys on my team.

    I am a 47 year old female, and I ran a 5k in 29:56 yesterday-I was ecstatic! I started running when I was 33 years old. Some years I ran a lot, some hardly at all. I barely ran the last two years, only logging one run in 2020. I started running a lot more in the last two months. Glad that short bit of training got me back into race shape! Hoping to run the 4th of July race at around 27 minutes. My PR is 21:30. I would love to get a sub 20 one day, but at my age, is that even realistic? I would think with the proper training it would be, but I sure see differences now from my earlier days of running. I need longer warm ups and way more stretching after running than I did back then!

    If your in highschool, I would say 17:20 or faster can get you some wins in local meets, but what I would consider good would be sub 16:40

    • @Solpri
      @Solpri  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is why good is basically impossible to define generally. It's all dependent on the context. 17:20 would have qualified you for the state meet at my high school (Missouri 4A), but if you wanted to win state you need to be mid 15s. Another good example is my friend former pro triathlete Barb Lindquist. She was ranked #1 in the world, competed in the 2004 Olympics. Ended up 9th after leading the race and getting caught on the run. I think most mortals would say she did damn well, but she will downplay the experience because it didn't live up to her expectations of herself. This is a long winded way to say - determining what is good is somewhat of a fool's errand. If you focus on competing against yourself then you've learned the real game.

      Bruh that’s impossible
      I’m like the fastest runner for my year level at this distance and I can barely break the 25 minute mark

    • @Solpri
      @Solpri  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aussiegaming8156 Not impossible, but often it seems to depend on your cohort. For whatever reason certain years and locations of runners will seemingly go faster than others. Could be culture, could be genetics, could be a mix. I started out high school running mid 19's - ended running high 17's. Mileage never broke the 35 mi per week mark at the time. I never made a state meet, but did pretty well overall at most meets we went to. That didn't stop me from being jealous of my friend who won the state meet with that mid 15's time, but all you can do is work hard and see how far your potential can take you. There's nothing you can do about your genetics, so focus on the controllable factors, enjoy the ride and be patient. Some people make big leaps in speed (myself included) that nobody would have expected when you put in the time.

      Yeah I was exaggerating a bit but I’d say a good time is anything under 30 minutes
      Especially with how many people run that far at my age

    • @Solpri
      @Solpri  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aussiegaming8156 Unless I'm not remembering right, I think that's basically the conclusion I came up with in the video based on the distribution of numbers. It's easy to get deceived on what's "good" based on how fast you are. I just spoke with a guy on the podcast who's a sub 4 minute miler, so like 14ish 5k - to me that's really good, to him that's normal. To most people - it's insane. So personal perspective definitely changes our feelings of "good" pretty easily which is why I feel like going off the raw data like in the video is a more accurate assessment of "good" if you want something concrete.
