I went on it a week ago, and it’s horrifying. I was more scared of this than Raging Bull, due to the fact of how rickety it is. They don’t just need to retract it, I think they might need to fix up the wood as well.
I've ridden both sides of it never racing though. I know people sometimes complain about it's roughness but personally it gives it character and I quite enjoy it, even so I hope Great America gives this coaster some love and fixes it up.
Man this was the first coaster I ever rode when I was old enough for my.parents to let me on one. And I.remember those days when you'd ride up and the other side would be next to you. Then you'd run back into the cue to get on the other side.
This was my first coaster at about 7 years old. No lap bars in those days, just a shitty seat belt. I was not prepared for the first drop. Left the ride excited, wanting to go again, but was totally shaking. This is still a good ride, and rarely a wait. Sometimes the red train is put on backwards.
I love this roller coaster. Worked at SFGA as a teen and rode this ride many, many times over the years...both sides, backwards, forwards. On employee appreciation nights, we could ride it as many times as we wanted. There was usually a short line for the front seats, but we could ride it over and over again (without getting out of our seats) if we would settle for a middle spot. Thanks for the memory jog!
The first year I went to six flags great America was the first year they had the eagle going backwards. I started my day off with the demon, the whizzer, the iron wolf, and the tidal wave of all things. I had to work up my confidence to get on the eagle, I rode it backwards and at night. OMG! I’ve been addicted to coasters ever since! The American Eagle is truly a great American roller coaster! Great vid, thanks for the nostalgia!
Idk how you went on those first for me it was whizzer then Eagle was my second coaster ever then I worked up to demon and iron wolf I was scared of loops and raging bull later.
@@HondaAccordPerformance yeah, those appeared much smaller and digestible so it was a mental thing, Don’t know how u went from the whizzer to the eagle. Brave heart for real. Talk about a giant leap for mankind!😂🤣
The last seat is the best for the most air time. Its also fun at the top of the lift as the front of the train is starting to roll down the hill it makes the back end fly over the top giving you just a little bit of air time before you take the plunge. I am old enough to have watch them build the Eagle, I was living near there in the 70's when the park first opened under Marriot.
I went on this ride last month. It was kind of rough but I feel like all wooden roller coasters that I have been on so far have some kind roughness to them, especially the older ones. I must say, I enjoyed this ride because it had some kind of unpredictability to it with the speed, turns, and drops. This is my second favorite wooden roller coaster that I have ridden after El toro at Six Flags great adventure.
Such a classic old-timey coaster. You go out, you come back. It was fun when they used to race red vs. blue, plus it's one of the few rides with little to no wait time (usually).
I remember hating this ride when I was younger lol. But im older and i love thrilling experiences more. If i can handle the wild eagle now then i can handle this now
Went on this ride a ton when I was a kid, I only lived about 4 miles away so spent almost every day there in the summers. I also worked there during the high school years, and was certified to operate a number of rides including Shockwave and the Eagle. I never got a chance to actually operate the Eagle, as I was only trained as a backup in case they were short staffed. I got to operate the scenic railroad, which is the only ride you can actually ride in while you are operating it.
I was there on opening day for the American Eagle. I was about 14-15 years old. I had been there many times before. My friend and I waited over 2 hours in line to get to ride it. We got into the car and my overhead restraint wouldn’t lock into place. The ride attendants didn’t realize it, even though my girlfriend and I were waving our arms and screaming. They started to let the ride go, and I was terrified, but fortunately, the ride operator saw there was a problem and pulled the train back. The attendant grabbed me and my fried and basically threw us into the other train next to it, because they didn’t have time to mess around with so many people wanting to ride this roller coaster. By then, I was traumatized and didn’t want to ride the ride anymore, but I didn’t have a choice. I was crying the whole ride because was realizing that I would have died if they had ran the first car with my overhead restraint not working. It felt like that ride lasted forever, and I was no longer a fan of roller coasters after that.
Gunna miss this ride, they will close it down and prob replace it as it can't race anymore, and the wood is so old and falling apart. HOPEFULLY they'll remake it to be the exact same except it's a steel version.
It used to race all the time but the park now only dispatches one side at a time or only has one side running most of the time. They sadly from what I have been told.... can’t race it anymore which really stinks.....
@@tigerrocks503 That is true. The reason is the ride can not handle both sides at the same time or racing. It has been said that while racing the ride around the helix begins to shake in the supports. Also may be due to lack of ridership as well. Tbh this is still a good coaster and i hope they can get it fixed for years to come.
Never been to this park but hopefully in the future one day I can make it here eventually, but as far as American Eagle goes this ride needs the RMC treatment badly!!!
Why do they always use the tannoy it's so annoying. What's wrong with audio. Also why do wooden roller coasters in six flags parks always have back rests if it has PTC trains. Also what's the purpose of those stupid black panels sticking out from the side of the trains!!! Also.... what a bad layout. The big helix ruins the good pacing and the trims just slow it even more. What a shame
I mean it’s bumpy, but it doesn’t torture your back like Son of Beast did. There are and have been worse woodies out there. This is a wooden coaster that is kinda underrated.

I did a couple years back and it was pretty rough. Rumor going around says they're gonna retrack it, I'm probably gonna revisit it if true.

It still was kinda a fun ride, but it was just way to shaky for my liking. They definitely need a retrack for our own good
I've ridden both sides of it never racing though. I know people sometimes complain about it's roughness but personally it gives it character and I quite enjoy it, even so I hope Great America gives this coaster some love and fixes it up.
its okay, wayy too bumpy tho 🥲kinda gives me a headache after
I love this coaster. I'm old so I've ridden both sides. Dueling, backwards. I hope they keep it for a long time to come.
Me too lol
Sad, they closed the blue side because of how old it is and safety precautions, hope they fix it to keep the legacy of this ride going.
@@bobthefoo22_official well now the red side is closed
I hear they're gonna retrack, or even RMC it. I sure hope so.

are you sure it was just the seatbelt because you could of fell off the roller coaster just with the seatbelt
I remember riding it as a kid and it was just the lap bar. They added the seatbelts later.

I only got to ride the Iron Wolf once before they got ride of it. Most uncomfortable ride of them all
Same 😊

This is a good ride beside the fact it feels like the coaster is breaking while your ride it.

If they put titan tracks on this thing itd be a top wooden coaster
This is the best ride😊
Second time I rode this it started raining right before the first drop. Sky just opened up. They had to finish the ride. Rain at that speed.... Owww
I've never gotten to ride the right side 😭😭
This coaster makes you feel like ur floating lmfao
They should RMC it! Make another Twisted Colossus!

Never knew this was a Intamin creation
Thes is my favret roller cister at gratamerica
This is the scariest part!
I rode this with my friend in 2022 for my 8th grade grad trip in the front row and we almost died🤭
I watched this video and said to myself I can’t believe I did that
Imagine this ride as an rmc and calling it "great American Eagle"
@WaterishDog I agree. Maybe a re-tracking from Intamin or Gravity Group, but that's about it.
@WaterishDog facts
this hurts my butt but it was fun lol
is it smooth?
No. Not at all. But thats what makes it special. Go ride it. Its an awesome experience.
It looks harmless...but it's a fun experience

I did, but was disappointed. It was supposed to be a dueling roller coaster. But only one was operating. The excitement was totally lost.
