Almost nobody shows how to setup your tools for all of the cuts and that is the most important thing you should master. Thank you so much for your time spent in making this video. This helped me so much!
I have seen numerous videos on YT about just this; but you gave the best and easiest explanation on the measuring and test cutting how to. Thanks for explaining it so well.
This is an out standing explanation of making shaker doors perhaps the best video and tutorial I have ever seen. I have been using pocket holes for years for this style door , I never wanted to take the time to try the way You have made these doors in Your video , Once I watched the video , I thought I would give it a try. I am so glade I did. You made it look so simple . Cant thank You enough for this video. So grateful to have found Your site. !
I have watched tons of videos of how to cut tongue and groove and your video has been the best instructional video by far! I am a newbie at tackling shaker style doors and it was very helpful to me the way you started with the basics! Thanks!
Mike Lechmanik. You have given me the confidence to now attack a project I have been delaying for several months. The pieces for a shop cabinet have been ready for too long. You are very good at what you do and I truly appreciate your videos and all the effort you put into them.
I was building some storm windows for a friend of mine's camp and once I saw this vid, it hit me like a ton of bricks how to do it, but I watched your video for any tips I could use. It's been many years since I played with my wood shop and this was a great refresher to making these types of frames.
I agree with most of these comments: this is the best explanation of how to make this style door, especially the marking of the depth of the groove on the end to gauge the length of the tongue. No kidding, based on this video, I am going to try to make a door like this. Thank you, thank you!
Nice use of that flooring. I use MDF for panels because 6 mm plywood in the UK is guaranteed to be anything but flat ! MDF paints nicely too. In fact I used 18 mm for stiles and rails on doors for my daughter's 3 meter wide floor - to - ceiling storage last year. Primer + 3 coats of acrylic eggshell and they seem tough enough.
I needed this video about 2 months ago. I have made 10 large wall units in my life with shaker doors. This last one I started before a small medical issue. I began having trouble with math as a result. I have now worked it out however (time heals almost all), I watched, saved and thank you for this video. I am back on track. Yes I'm old, things fall apart as we age, LOL. Great video and thanks again.
you, my friend are an excellent teacher, seems to me the ladies have the patience and in depth explanations and detail. I wish i could teach as you do. thank you
WOW! I used the same technique without any experience. I don't have all the fancy wood shop tools so had to come up with a way of doing it with what I have. So I just looked at one on the kitchen cabinet and logically reverse engineered it. Came out perfect. We think alike so now I'm going to have to look at some of your other videos. Thanks!
Perfect! I live in a condo and often people leave their reno discards in our recycle area. I picked up a kitchen cabinet that was in really good shape but the door was a bit fancier than my existing shaker style doors. I will also be building a window box combination seating and storage area for my kitchen and being able to build these matching shaker doors is exactly what I need. Thanks Marie for posting the excellent and most timely video!
I was just trying this an hour ago and couldn’t get it right. You explained it very well just as everyone said so I’m going to try this again tomorrow. Great explanation!!!
Fantastic video! FINALLY, a teacher who obviously has an incredible grasp on both knowledge and valuable information, but most importantly how to communicate and teach it. This is simply incredible!
Thanks for the great, clear instructions and demonstrations. I also appreciate that you are all business with no crazy music and the shenanigans that I find really irritating with a lot of the other TH-cam contributors. I have to really concentrate cause I am a newbie to all this and I really appreciate the great camera work too. Lol: I kept putting the hoses on wrong on my Dust Deputy so I finally had to label which hole goes to which hose on the Dust Deputy canister. That's how new I am😁
That is a very good basic approach to fitting tenons and mortises. I do a similar process- always using a scrap piece before cutting the good ones. But, but for the fence location, I have a dial indicator clamped to the table and adjust the fence in thousandths and tap the fence just the right amount to have the next cut fit perfectly. I use 2 indicators on my router table for getting the fit with the next cut...Thanks for the video..Jim
The shoulder should be about 1/16th from the bottom of the groove for glue expansion. Its likely not to matter so so much, but that ensures it wont split or push apart. And glad you mentioned not making a thru cut with the wood against the fence and mitre guage. I was cringing until you mentioned why it was fine for this operation.
Thanks for posting this! Had to make shaker style doors for the first time at a new job, and this tutorial was quick, well explained, and terribly useful. Much appreciated!
Honestly, when using plywood for the center panel there's little chance of expansion. Gluing the panel in the grooves provides a lot of strength and makes up for the short tenons. Great job explaining the process!
Great job, great video. Excellent idea to add the calculations and to show the process of sneaking up on the cuts to help remind us it doesn't always fit perfect on the first or second try.
This is very well done. Clear and concise. I had made these shaker doors in the past but had forgotten all the tips for using the test fit procedure. Thanks. My wings nested as described. I would like to share my demountable outfeet table with you.
WOW, U are the an excellent instructor who really knows how to explain the entire process to where even any Burro can understand! From now on , I am going to be your shadow! Excellente, Magnifico, Bravo, Well- you get the picture!!Love Ya!
Thank you very much, I got a perfect fit using your methods. I struggled with other peoples methods but this worked out perfect first time. Sneaking up been the narative. Merry Christmas.
Great video. I made these today and it went really well! I think you can cut a step from the process if you do the fitting of the middle insert (1/4 ply) on the test piece straight in the beginning. I don't think there is a real need to run all the pieces once and have a thin strip only to adjust and rerun again unless the width of the insert material is actually wider than double the kerf of the saw blade in which case it would take more than two runs to get a clean cut.
This is so perfectly explained. Just awesome. Thank your very much for publishing this video. Just last Saturday I bought my first table-saw ever (a cheap one) so I'm curious if I can make this in the future. I'm now busy changing the lay-out of my shop because I don't have a place yet were to set it up. That's why I've been hesitating for more than two years whether to buy a table saw or not.
@@DIYMontreal Thanks. The saw is still 100% safe, in the box. It'll take some time else before the set-up is ready. But last Saturday I was at the place where I could buy that table saw. Thirty miles away from home. I hadn't been so far away since mid December.
Outstanding explanation! Thanks for going to the trouble of making this vid. Every once in a while I work up the steam to make a vid an it's excruciatingly slow and painful. And mine are junk compared to this. Keep it up! These are wonderful! Thx!
Should the panels be floating in a shaker door, is there enough glue to on the joints to keep door from coming apart? What type of saw blade did you use? This is without a doubt the best video I found on shaker doors. Thanks.
Nice job. I don't make a lot of doors, but do make a lot of furniture and other items. I'm making a little library for the neighborhood and so I gotta make a couple of nice doors (with plexiglass panels) from expensive hardwood since it'll be outside in all kinds of weather.
Awesome vid Montreal. Just the facts Ma'am, just the facts. If you are not a teacher, you might consider it, you have the gift of cutting through the BS, and just explaining the moves you need to make. Good job. Any noob looking to make a rail n stile door would do well to start looking here.
You are the first person I have seen explain in such a way that a beginner could follow great job.
Thank you so much, appreciate the compliment!
Took the words right out of my mouth.
I was literally thinking the same thing. First time I’ve ever commented on a post. Great job man, appreciate it!
Yepper 👍🏼
Absolutely agree!!!!
Almost nobody shows how to setup your tools for all of the cuts and that is the most important thing you should master. Thank you so much for your time spent in making this video. This helped me so much!
Thanks for the clear instructions, the closeups, and especially the details on how to get the settings right. You’re a great teacher!

Wow that's a huge build! MDF is great for it's stability 👍
This video is bookmarked and my go to tutorial whenever I build shaker doors. Precise and to the point. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I needed this video about 2 months ago. I have made 10 large wall units in my life with shaker doors. This last one I started before a small medical issue. Glad to hear you're back on track! Hope the video helps you with the next one you build.
Why you don't have a million subs is beyond me. You are one of the best teachers on YT
Thank you....the way you explained how to cut the tongue was the best that I have seen, and it fitted exactly to the bottom of the groove.
Very good explaination how to make shaker style doors.
Awesome. The visuals explaining your calculations for the stiles and rails were very helpful!
Awesome, glad to hear it!
you, my friend are an excellent teacher, seems to me the ladies have the patience and in depth explanations and detail. I wish i could teach as you do. thank you

That's precision! Just trying to keep it basic for people that don't have all the tools we do.
The very best explanation I've seen so far about making shaker style doors...Thanks for posting this most detailed video & instructions!

I just paln to make 2 cabinet doors rescently, and I only has a table saw in hand now. Your video is so great and so helpfur for me. Thanks.
Your video is very well done and I really appreciated the straightforward explanation on each of the steps.
Thanks, appreciate it
Great level of needed detail and explanations
Many thanks!
Thank you for showing a way tht doesn’t involve holding directly about the saw
Thanks for the instructions I'm a beginner thank you

Honestly, when using plywood for the center panel there's little chance of expansion. Gluing the panel in the grooves provides a lot of strength and makes up for the short tenons. Great job explaining the process!
True, but I assume that would be more messy with the glue squeeze out and I'm lazy 😉
@@DIYMontreal that's possible, but if the doors are very big, which yours aren't, it's good to have the strength since the tenons are short.
I must reiterate what has been said, great demonstration and explanations. Thanks.
Great job, great video. Excellent idea to add the calculations and to show the process of sneaking up on the cuts to help remind us it doesn't always fit perfect on the first or second try.
Thanks, I figure if I had to figure it out I might as well share the details with everyone so they can skip that step.
Merci pour les informations pour les ajustements final👍
Avec plaisir!
Best tutorial for these that I’ve seen yet. Thank you!
Looks great!
Great. Thanks for the video. I just bought my first table saw. Now to make some shaker doors.

Nice work, Marie. I was wondering how you achieved such nice flat bottom grooves with an ATB combo blade? Your joinery is superb.
Bad ass!! I made two the very first try! Now to learn about hinges! Thank you!
Great video - you did a great job of explaining the process and the results were perfect. Thanks again, you've got a new subscriber!
Great job
Great work! That was such a crystal clear explanation and demonstration. G'day from Australia.
Thank you so much mate!
Great video-one of best explanation of making shaker style cabinets. Thanks for sharing.
I like the way you describe your videos! You’re very good! Keep up the good work! I’m a fan!
Thanks, appreciate that!
Thank you.
As usual, your video is the best! Clear explanations with great video work on setting up the tools. You are such an inspiration!

You could always use Space Balls with the centre panel instead of just leaving it floating, they’re relatively inexpensive.
Super-simple explanation, thankyou!
My pleasure! Glad it was clear 👌
Very well explained. Thanks for that.

I like to use a dado blade or a tendening jig much quicker run it threw once . Nice video.
That was a great tutorial. I've got a project coming up where I need to make one door. I think I'm going to try this out.
It's a great skill building project!
