It was a boring night in February of 2014 and I had just gotten my PS4. I played all day and got bored, so I was looking through the PS Store, and what I found was Outlast for free. I downloaded it and began to play. At that time, I really didn't know that it was a horror game, so I still had my headset volume turned up. But as soon as I got into the Asylum, I freaked out; seriously. I could barely stay conscious.
Just imagine playing this in the middle of the night, in a dark room, with your headset turned up, (stupidly) not knowing that it is a horror game.
I quit playing for a year and then beat the game in 2 days. It was still pretty fucking scary, but I got used to it. At least a bit.
This is my Outlast story.

PLEEEASE don't let this be a female version of Outlast- because to me, if they make it about women this time, then it will be just about every horror movie throughout the 2000s meant to be fanservice for men. Outlast wasn't made to be fanservice, it had male sexual violence and body horror in it because it was so unusual and unsettling that made it into an effective horror game.
But other than that, I'm looking forward to freaked out Let's Players.

I know many of you were offended by this post, and I apologize for that.
But was the post sexist? yes, because I was talking about sexist films. Does that mean the Outlast game will be sexist if there's a female protagonist? NO! For all we know, Red Barrels could change how female protagonists are treated in the gaming industry (ever heard of David Cage?), especially in the horror genre. And I suspect we'll be playing the wife- and that is no problemo because it is their game and I will respect their decision, because after this post they responded with a polite reply, and my fears were laid to rest right there. So far, the demo looks great, and I will still be looking forward to it.
2024 update: So yeah this comment didn't age well. This game was very centered and sexist towards women. There was literally a village of woman rapists. And though the school flashback sequences is quite tragic, its done in very bad taste. And the was even an unused audio file of the little girl getting raped by the priest. Just why?
All in all, I would say if a person likes the first game and the Whistleblower DLC, they have great taste. But if a person likes the second game and Trials, then turn the other way.
dude, who fucking cares if its a girl?. a good price of media that is horror does not rely upon the gender of the main character but the fear the atmosphere delivers, the emotion if genuine terror is what made outlast good, now the sexual violence played a part but it wasn't souly what made it good like you're trying to say.

I feel like I shouldn't have to say this again, but I was referring to my memories of cheesy 90s and early 2000s slasher flicks, we all had to live through that, I'd rather not see a repeat of it.
And of course, a male protangonist wasn't what made Outlast special, it was the exclusively male cast of characters that made it quite unique. To have a female version of that, would be the 90s slasher flick for me.

So excited! I've been a gamer since the Commodore 64 and a horror game fan since Resident Evil. Just when I thought games can't really freak me out or get to me anymore, Outlast comes along. Very few horror games give me the same adrenaline rush that Outlast gave me.

Shit, this video is about to become 2 years old next month. I remember watching this in school right when it came out. After seeing Red Barrels post that "Tomorrow" post I've been refreshing their TH-cam page over and over, then I see "OUTLAST II TEASER" and I screamed in the halls... Memories.
Am I the only one getting KKK vibes? And the monologue (coming from Revelations) reads: "And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. Of course the Southern accented, evil-sounding speaker may not be a bad guy-but assuming he is, that isn't Satanic speak. That is someone who is deeply Christian. The words seem to suggest a sort of nationalism as well (which the KKK were also a part of).
As well, if they want to talk about "faith" and "religion", Satanism really wouldn't be the right way to go. Not that Theistic Satanism doesn't exist; but the Satanism people are actually probably most familiar with isn't a religion, it's an ideology that uses Satanic symbolism more for association than for worship or idolatry.
If they really wanted to talk about the horrors "faith" and "religion", it'd be better to look at actual broad religion and religious fundamentalism. For that you could look to fundamentalist Islam, but obviously that's not the route this is going. And outside of the crusades, the greatest expression of the horror of fundamentalist Christianity would be the KKK.

Por lo menos no sacaron un producto mas comercial como five nights at freddy's que sale cada dos meses o algo asi y que a la larga terminara por aburrir a sus seguidores porque lo exprimen demasiado, que bueno que se hallan tomado su tiempo para hacer esta segunda parte de Outlast, eso dice mucho del compromiso que tienen por hacer un buen juego de terror, ojala que cumpla mis expectativas ya que las tengo muy altas despues de jugar el primer juego que es de mis preferidos.

Anybody else wonder what happened to Miles? In Whistleblower, Im pretty sure that he ain't dead and was free to roam outside the Asylum. I hope that they could connect it to this story too. But whatever they decide to do with the story, one thing is for sure...
