First, thank you for all your hard work. When I copy your loads, I sometimes feel a little embarrassed, like I’m copying the homework from the smarter kid in the class. That being said, I worked up my own MK262 clone using CFE223, N540 and N140 because those were the three powders I had which you also evaluated. I used the same LC brass, the same No.41 primer and the SMK bullet. Not surprisingly, I got almost the exact same velocities and SD’s as you. But I found the N540 (24.5 gr) was the most accurate and gave me the approximately 2750 FPS needed (in 20” barrel). I was also getting really excellent groups of less than half an inch at 100 yards. I feel proud of myself that I could so closely replicate your work! Thanks again. You are a real boon to the reloading community.
I'm liking that 24.7gr N540 group, I'd be happy with it; but I would have to load some 24.5, 24.6, 24.8 and 24.9gr ladder loads to see if there is a really sweet node in there. That's just the way I tick.
I just want you to know man you were one of the serious influences that got me into doing my own reloading. Your review on the breech lock Challenger press kit is one of the reasons why I went with that kit. I plan to post videos soon and I sure hope you check them out.
Just happened to take a tour of the Starline facility today. Was very impressed with the production procedures in manufacturing their brass and qcqa. Everyone I talked too was very friendly and the seemed to enjoy their work. Special kudos to Dave Wolf who took all the time he did showing me around. I love to see equipment running this smooth. Wish my hand loads went together this well. Me and a friend are just about finished putting together an Aero Precision 6.5 Creedmoor build so we want to thank you for paving the way for us. Mine is almost identical to yours except I chose the 22 inch barrel in fluted. Want to thank you for your wonderful videos.
New test with VV N540 at 24.4, 24.6, and 24.8 charge weights. These were at a OAL of 2.246 (+/-) .002. Maybe even try closer to 2.250. Nice video as always. TY so much for all you do. I learn a ton from your videos.
Really good shooting JRB. That WOA is a shooter. I liked seeing the 8208 XBR get there as I believe this is the first time you have used CCI 41’s with 8208 and in my experience 8208 is one of those powders that is very primer sensitive. In my guns 23.6-23.7 of 8208 XBR with CCI 41’s clones MK262 while if I’m using REM 7&1/2 it takes close to 24.0 grains and I end up with more pressure with the 7&1/2’s. So it’s nice to see 8208 shine with CCI 41’s. Good stuff.
I’m busy testing N140 behind 75gr Hornady HPBT Match in my 16” Colt M4. 1in7 twist. All rounds touching at 70m. Velocity 2450fps with 23.6gr. Using Remington brass and Federal primers. Busy working up for higher velocity. Thinking N540 may work even better. Vihtavuori is really great! I still need to test Nosler CC 77gr as well. I’ve been using S321 here in South Africa but it is too fast and pressure signs showing early. Thanks for a great channel! I am learning a lot and am having fun!
Seeing this video go live made my night! Please keep up with the mk262 series, I bought a bunch of supplies to start reloading by following some of your examples/loads in this series.
I'm really liking the imr 8208 to me the accuracy is the best,it my be a little less velocity, but at 2700 it seems to shine, close enough for my liking.thanks for doing this work up! Great videos!
UR Gavin has had success with the 77gr and N140 at 24.7gr charge weight. But his COAL was 2.26" I think you can load longer at the 24.4gr - 24.7gr range as long as your magazine can take the longer COAL. Those are great groups out of a semi-auto.
N-540 does indeed look promising. A minor change in brass and primer may produce exactly what you are looking for. Winchester made the brass for the original MK 262 with BHA head stamp.
Very nice video! I`m amazed how good the SMK`s are. I`m using the 80 grain SMK with 22.8 grains Vihtavuori N140. It clocks in at 2625 fps using the Labradar. Getting very tight groups, consistent at 0.3 moa when I get a good batch with even bullethold. This in a Tikka T3 Supervarmint .223 23 inch 1:8 barrel. COAL is looong, 2.460" (Lapua match brass) My groups tightened in a suprisingly lot when I started using CCI 400 primers. Also using a single compound powder is better on barrel life, but after seeing this video I`m going get a box of N540 and try it out!
Hey Johnny, want some more powder choices? Try looking at Shooter World powders. They have 5 or 6 you could have fun with. Match Rifle, Precision Rifle, Tactical Rifle, Long Rifle, and Blackout Rifle powders. They also have SBR/SOCOM and Buffalo Rifle but the first five would be cool..MidSouthShooterSupply has them on NO hazmat today for 4 #'s or more. I got Precision Rifle as the importer says it is like Varget. Blackout similar to Accurate 1680. Anyway Long Rifle for 6.5 creed the rest for 223, 300AAC, and up to 308... best of all about $20 a bottle.
I thaught of trying the Lovex/Shooters world Match Rifle, a fellow competitor said it was just relabled AA-2520. I doubt that's the case but I know nothing of the company
Why not give H4895 another shot. You started too high with the powder the first time and you got pressure signs, but you also were over the target velocity.
I can't remember what grain bullets you have been using in the .224 Valkyrie loads but I have been keeping up on this cartridge and what I have been reading is that is if your going to be shooting 90's is that the 1-6.5 twist barrels are needed, I got a remage 24" 1-6.5 barrel from criterion coming for a 700 build and a source had told me that anything lower than 90gr they were shooting good to great but the 90gr not so much in the 1-7. Been hearing some are going to the 1-6.5, don't know how they are doing for the lower weight bullet but I guess I will find out first hand when I get my the barrel, also I don't reload yet so I'll be using factory ammo until I do reload. Thanks for the great videos, keep up the good advice and work!!
I'm getting awsome results. With benchmark and the 77smk and 77 Tsmk. I never thaught to try bmarK but I use it in 6ppc, 6.5 Grendel and. 219 D-Wasp. I guess I just figured it was too fast for 77s in the 5.56
If you look at Sierra reloading manual for ar AR their max for Viht N540 powder is 24.9 grains. But on.223 bolt action 80gr. HPBT Matchking thier max for Viht N540. 25.5gr. Velocity of 2900fps
...I'm looking at 80grn SMK in bolt rifle and although the max charge is 25.5grn the COAL is 2.550"! So you need a long chamber to avoid pressure issues, potentially?!
As reloader at the intermediate skill level I am really enjoying your videos. Any chance of seeing some load tests for 5.56 sbr/pistol? Would love to see some Hornady Tap sbr duplications. Keep up the good work.
You should do vids with the hornady 75gr bthp! About 18c a bullet (budget mk262) and seems to have great performance for me. .75"-1" groups on average out of my wylde build with a seekins barrel. Would love to see some powder comparisons with it
Faces intact, It's good to see you getting dialed in. I know it's not MK 262 but I am curious to see a combination of best powder, projectile, brass, and primer. I think Berger 77 gr projectile with, N540, Norma, Lapua or LC brass, 41 primer. I know it's a challenge putting it all together. Thanks for your work.
Romeo Boom CCI 41 won't be the primer of looking for best one honestly. Federal GM205M or Remington 7-1/2 will be winner there, that's been proven on the bench rest circuit for decades.
why would you change your barrel? Your load data is going to change. Does the factory ammo group the same with this barrel? When working up a load don't change the gun. If you want to see how it shoots with a different barrel, borrow or buy. That way your baseline gun stays the same.
Hey Brother, I remember seeing Larry Potterfield from Midway USA use a powder drop tube for a black powder load, now it turns out they have the same kind of kit to help compress or seat smokeless powder charges a bit better.
Yes, Forster and other makers offer drop tubes with funnels on them, just for this application. They do help eliminate crunching the powder up to a point.
I live in New Zealand, and I got some powder called "Belmont Action Rifle". Basically is St marks WC747. It's a ball powder. Burning rate between AID 2206H to 2208. And it's a part of general dynamics. Kinda military powder, not so common in commercial market. Would this could be one of the possibilities?
I have only watched two videos of yours so far, so forgive my ignorance if you already covered this. However, am I understanding this correctly that you switched from the 5.56X45 mm NATO chambered barrel to a.223 Remington chambered barrel for this video? I’m sure you know this already, but some of your viewers might not understand that those chambers, specifically the throat, are not exactly the same. And therefore you cannot expect comparable results or safe chamber pressures using top-end loads from the 5.56X45mm barrel in the shorter throat of the .223 Remington chambered barrel. As you stated, don’t blow your face off!
Ran my first batch of Valkyrie reloads today. 25.4 of reloader 17 gave me my best group of 5/8” chronograph died so I don’t have velocities, sorry. Was shooting 95 smk out of a 24” white oak barrel. 58 degrees 4800 ft elevation. Most of my load variances printed 1” or bigger groups. 25.9 gr re 17 was 3/4”. Hope this helps. I’ve had inconsistent clambering issues. Have you have any further issues?
this may not be the place to address the issue, but I believe one of the accuracy problems in the most recent .224V videos is that the increments you used were way too large. full grain jumps may just skip right over an accurate combination.
Thanks for the data. This may not be the best platform to ask this. But. What would you recommend to a newer shooter that has a $1000 budget for an ar build for upper & lower? Caliber...barrel...bolt carrier...etc? Thanks.
Nope, but I sure would love to have one. If you've got the money, I would definitely recommend going that route. I know I would! I haven't heard anything bad about them so far.
I got one this past December and just got a chance to use it and I am in love with it. It retains so much information that can be put into a spreadsheet. It is great.
Johnny's Reloading Bench For anyone out there considering a new chronograph, I recommend the Labradar. I’ve had one for about six months now. Prior to that, I have had six chronographs over the last two decades and hated everyone of them for one reason or another. I have no complaints about the LabRadar thus far! So thats’s saying something.
Tight groups and small SD do not always go together. That's one of the things we're constantly searching for. Also, be wary of 5-shot SD numbers. They're certainly not useless and generally do a good job of telling us what loads are shooting consistent velocities, but a larger sample size would be much better. Whether you choose tight groups or small SD/ES really comes down to what you are going to do with the ammo. If I'm loading ammo for a max range of 500 yards the SD might not matter that much. If I'm loading for 1,000 yards the SD might make it worth choosing a poorer grouping load. You ask a tough question and I don't really have a good answer!
I don't have a test gun for .243, unfortunately. I have dies and everything...I just need to get a gun. It's on the list. Probably won't happen really soon, but someday I'll get around to it! I love .243!
Johnny's Reloading Bench all you need now is one more barrel for your AR10 platform. Hmmmmm...... so should not be too bad. Or another Compass, American,or Axis ......
Shawn O'Brien CCI #41 ARE a magnum primer, they are the same as the CCI 450 just with an even thicker primer cup. But they use the same charge of priming compound.
Hey Johnny very excited to see your back at it u was really starting to wonder just what was going on with ya. Bit I just bought my first AR it's a stag with a 1/7twist. I would really like some advise on what you think would be a good fit for me and this rifle I would really like the 77gr otm personally. But what is your opinion
If you want to evaluate the rifle for accuracy the 77gr SMK is a great option. They get expensive for plinking, though. It all depends on what you plan to do with your rifle! Your 1/7 twist will be just fine with anything in the 55-77gr range.
Thanks guys I was looking at the Hornady I thi k in just going to load up a bunch of the 75 or 77 grainers and store them more or less maybe shoot 30 or 40 once in a while bit not a plinking round for sure tjos will be to make brass to reload 😁
Yes! I've got the dies my grandfather gave me. I just need to set aside the time and make a project of it. I'm hoping to start soon, but I want to get back into the flow of more regular uploads first.
I look forward to when you do. Eventually I'd like to try using my swaged 77 gn RBT to pseudo-clone the Mk 262 Mod 1, but I have to make enough first. I also have to get some suitable powders. It will be cool if it works.
“Because we like to pretend we’re in the military”. That line gets me... 😂😂
A lot of the little comments he puts out there gets me smirking. It’s one of the things that makes Johnny’s channel so fun to watch!
I'm liking that 24.7gr N540 group, I'd be happy with it; but I would have to load some 24.5, 24.6, 24.8 and 24.9gr ladder loads to see if there is a really sweet node in there. That's just the way I tick.

Johnny's Reloading Bench if you ever get a chance check me out th-cam.com/video/kWtePbncfH4/w-d-xo.html
Ron Bartch I take it your question is for Johnny right? I dont have an AR 10
op25ttfd sorry yes for Johnny!

Great! I ordered some N540 and I was happy with the results. I'll keep up on it! Thanks!
Really good shooting JRB. That WOA is a shooter. So it’s nice to see 8208 shine with CCI 41’s.
Good stuff.
T Hutch try Winchester small rifle primers. (WSR) with 22.6-23.6gr of 8208. (2580 fps-2750fps)
Ah the saga continues! Thank you!
I’m busy testing N140 behind 75gr Hornady HPBT Match in my 16” Colt M4. 1in7 twist. All rounds touching at 70m. Velocity 2450fps with 23.6gr. Using Remington brass and Federal primers. Blues Stratman And the SD of the 8202 seems to be consistently excellent. At long range that is important.
Epic! “We like to pretend we’re in the military” so true.
Map Led you gotta watch elite tactical war fighter JRB is ate up lol
Or we just use terms standard to the environment that created the tools we're using.
Awww yisss - just bought 500 of these bullets and was watching this series last night for a recap.
That's a solid purchase! They sure are fun to play around with. My barrel seems to be made for these things!
Johnny's Reloading Bench mine too. I have a woa 1:8 but in a varmint profile
I bet you been out turkey hunting. ain't chya? Now your back on track. You are not alone Johnny, you are not alone.
UR Gavin has had success with the 77gr and N140 at 24.7gr charge weight. But his COAL was 2.26" I think you can load longer at the 24.4gr - 24.7gr range as long as your magazine can take the longer COAL. Those are great groups out of a semi-auto.
Great stuff as always man! FYI Hornady announced 88g ELD loaded 224 Valkyrie ammo. I’d love to see you test a box when it comes out. I will be!
Johnny I would really love to see another series like this with maybe SMK 69 and or hornady eld match 73
Absolutely love this series! Looking forward to more ar 10 videos.
N-540 does indeed look promising. A minor change in brass and primer may produce exactly what you are looking for. Winchester made the brass for the original MK 262 with BHA head stamp.
David Dale yup. Lengthening the OAL a touch to mag length may help with compressed loads too. My metal mags allow for 2.280 ish
You are absolutely correct. Jump to the lands will make a small but measurable difference (usually around .25")
I've never seen a BHA headstamp on the 223 stuff. I have on the 308 ammo
I do not know the exact headstamp of the original MK 262 Mod O but was relating that it came from Black Hills Ammo (BHA).
I do not remember the exact headstamp, I was relating that it was assembled at Black Hills Ammo (BHA).
Very nice video! I`m amazed how good the SMK`s are. I`m using the 80 grain SMK with 22.8 grains Vihtavuori N140. It clocks in at 2625 fps using the Labradar. Glad to see you back at it with some .223.
Guess I’ll have to buy some N540 now.
...great video, just about to start reloading 77 SMKs and wanted to see how much better N540 is over N140. It's looking like a winner right here!
Why not give H4895 another shot. You started too high with the powder the first time and you got pressure signs, but you also were over the target velocity.
Thank you for doing this!!!
Man...
You are truly a horrible influence.
I got done watching your video on mk262 mod 1 and melted my credit card down.
A couple really good groups there bud!
Thanks, brother!
I think I’d cheerfully take the very slightly lower velocity for that accuracy. May have to do something similar with my JP barrel and see what I get.
GREAT STUFF JOHNNY
Just wondering about the cannelure. How important it is when loading 77gr SMK for AR-15?
That's why I love 8208xbr. I would like to see what you are getting out of a 10.5" AR with the mk262 loading's you have been using.
That's impressive. It's a shame VV powder is so expensive
Today is the day I roll-up a bunch of this and see what happens. Using AA2520 and N540 … getting an early start.
I had great results with 22.4 grains of N-135 and 77grain SMK, and it wasn’t compressed.
At the end of the series you should do a shootout of the top 10 powders group/velocity on the 77gr.
Great video. When you get the chance, I would love to see power pro varmint with the 62 grain bthp
At some point, I'd like to see SBR loads crafted for the 7.62X39, somewhat along the line of 300BK, so there'd be a complete burn in a 10.5" barrel.
I use N-550 in my 223rem with 75 gr A-max and 77 gr scenar to get very high velocity.
Have you given thought to AA2200? 20.4gr behind a 75gr ELD-M in my 20" MAS Defense barrel gave me a 3/8" 7 shot group the other day.
You should do vids with the hornady 75gr bthp! About 18c a bullet (budget mk262) and seems to have great performance for me. .75"-1" groups on average out of my wylde build with a seekins barrel. Would love to see some powder comparisons with it

How well does N540 meter out of a Dillon measure? I like to load my 5.56 on a 550.
Id love to see you try some Shooter's World brand powders!!!! Lmk is sponsor a pound.
This was a great video! Thank you.
i would have said fuck that last 30 fps this load at 2736 is the shit.
why would you change your barrel? Your load data is going to change. Does the factory ammo group the same with this barrel? When working up a load don't change the gun. If you want to see how it shoots with a different barrel, borrow or buy. That way your baseline gun stays the same.
yes! more mk 262!
Wow! Three ads.
Great job JRB, as always.

love these vidio series. have you thought of trying LT-32 powder, it works great for me. keep the vidioes coming
You should try H-322 since it’s an extreme powder. I’ve had great luck with it and heavy bullets.
Is there a log somewhere that shows the data? I just bought 2520 powder, that's the best powder right?
Has anyone used 40gr hollow points with N540? What loads were the best as i can't find a load for lighter bullets?
I always watch the ads on your channel all the way through. Hope I can do my small part.
Great video! Thank you!

Please try Vit N140 as well.
I'm running a 16in 1:9 spikes. So I'm hoping we can make it happen captain.
I'm wondering if the goal could be achieved with N140, too.
So at what point in SD do you choose a tighter group?
You have single digit SD's with poop group size but that 11 SD that was almost a one hole group.
Can you do a video of hornady vmax 60 grain with benchmark and h4895 please!!
Id check that stem its probably broken again. Forster stems and compressed charges do not play nice together.
I think you're probably right. I'll pull it out and check in the next video.
What’s the twist rate on your barrel?
Been appreciating these videos. Learned a lot. But have done any tested with a 223 wylde?
H335???
Just wondering what you trimmed the brass to?
I'm on a 243 loading kick. Any vids on that?
I don't have a test gun for .243, unfortunately. I have dies and everything...I just need to get a gun. It's on the list. Probably won't happen really soon, but someday I'll get around to it! I love .243!
Johnny's Reloading Bench I don't either! Loading for a friends deer gun. Haha
Johnny's Reloading Bench all you need now is one more barrel for your AR10 platform. Hmmmmm...... so should not be too bad. Or another Compass, American,or Axis ......
Wana borrow one
Hey JRB how was the N540 powder? Was it dirty of relatively clean? How do you think it would work in the 224VAL?
Doesn’t the Army call this load AA53?
Yes, I think they do.
Johnny, Do you want a New JP Enterprise Bore Guide for cleaning AR 10? Need Answer?
Johnny's Reloading Bench Great thanks, in the mail asap!
Think youll do a 77 tmk in 223/556 ?
Nice coincidence that you load 25.20 grains of accurate 2520 ?
can you say punchard primers ?
Great series I have learned a lot about loading up 223 from the series. When are you going to start doing loads on 45 ACP?
Have you tried CCI 450 primers with AR Comp? Rumor is the magnum primers touch off the AR Comp more consistently.
Shawn O'Brien CCI #41 ARE a magnum primer, they are the same as the CCI 450 just with an even thicker primer cup. But they use the same charge of priming compound.
Good stuff man
Hey Johnny very excited to see your back at it u was really starting to wonder just what was going on with ya. Bit I just bought my first AR it's a stag with a 1/7twist. I would really like some advise on what you think would be a good fit for me and this rifle I would really like the 77gr otm personally. But what is your opinion
Shane Rhodes try some Hornady 75 BTHP Match. Very similar to the 77gr and a fair bit cheaper. Shoots great in my 1:7.
So, may be a touch off topic, but what do you (as the best Thompson-center Compass saleman) think of .223/5.56 TC Compass?
gavintoobe did a series on the 223 compass. Check it out here: th-cam.com/play/PLApPU7t86M4tDiTULomwAk-kwyI06thiH.html
Have you thought anymore about getting into bullet swaging?
Great video I would still like to see you try 2230 , information and data is very helpful thank you again
Try benchmark
Try Alliant reloader&16
Good Stuff!

I thought this series was over, also... First
