I've been working on bikes since I was old enough to use a wrench. This is an awesome video. It has just enough detail that the average rider needs to know, and nothing more. Great work!
I'm a casual bike rider, but wanted to know more about the components on my bike to watch for deficiencies. This gal knows her stuff. She was excellent--very clear, precise and understandable. Thank you for this video
Haven’t used a bike in SO long and this is exactly what I was looking for. Everyone keeps using these terms for parts of the bike but never point to it. THANK YOU
Kat thank you very much for your time buddy. It is much appreciated. I had forgotten so much since I last rode a bike. It was a great refresher for sure. Awesome work.
I’m doing bike mechanic and I just want to congratulate and thank you for your kindly explanation. You and your video explain everything very clearly, nice and gently. A lot of tips are very valuable, thank you very much.
@@rei This video reminded me I need to buy a new bike. I've been on the REI website. Hoping I can find an electric cargo bike capable of moving 200kg uphill! (Including the rider.) I've realized maintenance isn't magic, so I'd be confident spending a lot on a bike. Before, I didn't want to take the risk of trashing it while out on a ride, and the situation being hopeless. But if I can do basic repairs myself, that changes things.
Semi-pro tip: When you remove the tube, don't remove yet or move the tire around the rim. Figure out on the tube where the puncture occurred, then bring the tube back to the wheel, line up the valve stem with the valve hole in the rim: you can now narrow down the area to search for the cause of the puncture to wherever the location of the puncture on the tube lines up to on the tire. Note that unless you tracked the orientation of the tube , there are _two_ candidate locations on either side of the valve, when you flipflop the tube over.
These are all the details a rider should know about their bike. Beautifully explained. As a Mechanic in progress, I can say that every aspect described in this video is absolutely critical about owning and riding a bike. Thinking about using this material to teach some local riders.
This is the best video I've seen for an older rider getting back into to it. I just brought home the the Specialized Roll, 3.0 and a few tools. Thank you so much. Well done.
This was fantastic! It was easy to follow, understand and was delivered in a clear and succinct order. am an LCI instructor and recently started working in the bike shop at REI this summer. Great step-by-step bike maintenance care. Ride on! 🚲
Unfortunately, I had to search "bike maintenance for ladies" to find a video NOT aimed at mega-jocks. Fortunately, I found this excellent video! Thank you for the very high quality content.
Can you do a video about what gears are better for different kinds of rides like 10-36 or 11-32 , as well as how more gears can be added to existing hubs due to spacer by manufacturers?
Rei is a coop with the best products. 20 a year and they help with everything with thoughtful conversations on the phone. lots of benefits with membership.
The links you commented on are not working. Great video! We are teaching middle school students a mountain biking enrichment class. They are actively riding off campus in mountainous terrain.
I'm the opposite, like Kat, i always shift to the smallest cog (OK, "when i remember" :-) It shouldn't make it harder, on the contrary,: a) that's where you have the most slack on the chain, so you can move the derailleur out of the way easier when removing or replacing the wheel, b) when putting the wheel back on, you know where to located the chain, it lines up nicely and doesn't get in the way.
Motorcycle chain cleaner and lubricant should work on a bicycle chain, right? A bicycle chain shouldn’t be fragile in that it requires a specific type of cleaner and lubricant??

Getting just the right amount of information in a short instructional video can be tricky, so we appreciate your kudos. Thanks Markos!

Right on! Even if you only casually ride, it can never hurt to understand how your bike works. 🙌🚲

I know an old post, but that is a way more complicated question than it seems on the surface.

We did all of this ourselves 20 years ago when we were kids, and we always carried a spoon to fix a flat tire. xD
Great beginners guide!
Thanks, Jesse!

i never like going to the smallest cog in the rear when removing my wheel it makes things harder

@@DominiqueB With the chain in the middle cog and nothing's in the way

Yes, whatever you have handy, no need to buy anything special if you already have some related product at home.
Just pointing out that bike’s rear triangle for all to see. No shame!
