    WOW.
    What otherworldly talent.
The looseness is just awe inspiring.
In my dreams I ever get there, but watching is just gorgeousness.

So much good information here! Learning to use deliberate, yet broad brushstrokes in the early stages is hard to learn unless shown. Anyone who is self-directing their education as a portrait painter needs to see this video!

At 4:10 I thought to myself, I love that blonde! Then, as soon as you said gray, all I could see was gray. Colors are mystifying and illusionary and so much of how your brain interprets them. It’s fascinating. Great post and video btw. Much appreciated. Thanks!!😄😄😄

    Houston we have a problem...
First- you. You are too beautiful, too talented, too smart. I will need to watch more to find your humanity.
Second- Hair itself. I am bald. In fact, I have alopecia and do not have even eyebrows. In my youth, I sported a mustache until it began just a half-"stash". A few points of my amateur analysis- be careful in establishing too much realism- the eye is drawn to the crisp details and usually you want the viewers eye to be drawn to the face- the hair nearly frames the subject. It is best to keep it suggestive . But suggestive of what?
The blocks of color tones and shades and blondes can have a rainbow of tints as you covered. But another "suggestion" the hair whispers to the viewer is rhythm, a flow, a concert of shapes not just a tangled mess of stained glass. Like music it has a harmony, rhythm and even lyrics to it. A hair-do says-sings alot about the person.
I could go on but lastly, the technique to achieve this false appearance of looseness and effortless suggestion by Ala prima well placed brush strokes. The secret sauce to the magic trick-illusion. What role do specific brushes and mediums play. I need to experiment more- you covered this but I need to stop typing and practice the mana you have shared with us earthlings
    -thank you.

What am I missing with the Sargent piece? I wouldn't want my hair looking like that. That don't Iook realistic
