This is a horror story I have seen over and over again. We have had clients that have been financially abused by other shops. We have a unit in at the moment. The client had it reconditioned for a sizeable sum 22 years ago. He was able to put less than 100 miles on the motor. It never ran correctly. He was treated poorly by the performance shop while he was trying to get them to solve the issues. He ended up walking away from the project until recently. Money, family, kids and life in general postponed the project. We found the project to be a horror story. We are just finishing this project for him. It has taken a bit of time as he was blindsided by the costs of repair. We have worked with him so he could save this vintage project. We restore classic and vintage motorcycles. He is the original owner of the 1976 Yamaha RD400. We work hard to save "heritage" projects. Good guy. Dishonest shop. Not just poor work. This was a situation where the work was never performed. We photo document all projects. We deliver all old parts to the client that were collected during the project. Our clients are reassured that all items and processes have been completed by supplying a thumb drive of all photos, spreadsheets of costs, and an exhaustive written narrative of work performed. This is exactly the reason I started to do my own engine. Got one crap from reputable shop, they bored the block too big and honed it very coarse. Then when it ate oil and was breathing like a train “its fine, you just don’t know better” So now if there is problems with my engines or machining I know where to lay blame! Huge respect for the outstanding work you are doing, at least there still is some good shops in the world!

I had a guy try to sell me a "rebuilt" engine. I told him to remove a head and if it is rebuilt then I'll buy the engine as is and pay for the new gaskets and put the engine back together.....he declined
glad it's not just me having to put right other folks garbage. you should see some of the rubbish kitchen and bathroom fitting i have to try and sort out. different trades, same crap.
30 years ago I went to court to get my money back on a rebuilt engine that had no new parts installed and the original parts installed were badly worn. I lost the case because the court stated that a rebuilt engine is exactly that. Taken apart and rebuilt. No new parts reqd. If the engine had been sold as reconditioned then my case would have stood up in court. Expensive lesson learnt.
That reminds me of the Cinch tv adverts where they say all their cars are fully reconditioned; what does that mean? When I was in the trade at franchised dealers we worked through a used car service check list but, invariably, sales would always decline any repairs that weren't safety related.
@@marymoffatt2060 I would never buy a car off Cinch having visited their prep warehouses on several occasions and heard about how long the guys actually get to fix things that are wrong.Time is money so the less time spent on the car is more profit for the BCA monster.
i rebuilt a cosworth engine maybe 20 years ago now one and only i have done, only reason is i think when everyone else seen it they said no because it was lump of rusty melted scrap from a fire damaged car. after stripping everything it seemed fine inside. had to send it to a specialist as the local machine shop would not skim the block because the liners sat proud of the block slightly this was a different type of wire ringing also the cam followers were solid with shims in them. the only thing they found wrong was the crank had twist and they straightend it
I know the feeling of getting a crap refurb engine, i got two from a guy who said they were all done, first one went at the cams on start up an he fitted new head sent it back and then the bottom end went after about 80 miles, i just gave up on that L200 after that, in fact the scrap man is coming for it tomorrow, wont buy a refurb again from anyone
That is a disgrace that someone supposedly rebuilt that engine they must have used bits kicking around on the junk pile. This is why you need to be careful where you get work done.
No small end bearing and no circlips on the pin.... I'm speechless.... Dropping that engine from a great height on the cheat that sold it would be too good for him.
A court that said rebuilt means take apart and put back together again with no change of any components is playing a word game ! The judge and any attorney involved should be taken out back and flogged for gross incompetence as well as abject ignorance!!
A customer once asked me to check over a freshly built Lotus Twincam engine he had bought. The head gasket was 3mm smaller in diameter than the bores, it had inner valve springs only fitted and they were sitting directly onto the aluminium of the head (no spring seats), each combustion chamber was a completely different size and shape and they were all leaking around the valve seats, some cam lobes were largely missing, etc, etc. This wasn't the only such example I've seen. When working for a well known rally team in the 1980s we were asked to check over a single cam Vauxhall 2.3 engine which turned out to be a knackered engine that had had nothing more than a coat of paint. We were surprised that the customer seemed so cheerful about it, but later discovered that he had "connections" in the East End of London. Apparently he had gone to visit the vendor with several of these individuals in tow and had offered him a couple of "choices". Seems he received a full refund plus significant compensation as well.
That engine must have came from a car breakers it's disgraceful how anyone could say they rebuilt that engine if I was the owner I would take the engine back
The best way we rebuild engines is first we steam clean the outside then spray it black or whatever colour the clients wants we shine up the covers and then charge him around £ 5k for it.
Years ago, a customer dropped off a Datsun L18 with a shopping list of things done to it, forged pistons etc. The only things true were its capacity, and block deck was o ringed.

People have to be careful on who they get to rebuild their motors. Its sad someone ripped this guy off and people like this gives all mechanics a bad name.

There is an engine rebuilder near me, they produce three levels of rebuild the top level of which is only available to them, for their in house engine replacements. the second level is only sold to the trade to fit, and the third/ lowest level is sold to DIY ers , who are not warned they are buying half a job.
Come to Pembrey track day in Carmarthenshire West Wales sometime. Motorways most of the way, about 12 miles of other roads too at end. This Summer? Nice shortish tight circuit. Cornererd do well.
Off main topic do you not put a chamfer on the fresh bores to avoid a hot spot and make for easier piston fitting i could not see a chamfer on the tops of that vr6 block?
Does the kit car have a differential vent? Check that or uograde. We had issues with the vent being clogged and pissing out the pinion seal. The seal isnt the issue. Maybe the differential could use a air scoop and aluminum cover to help dissipate the heat. Just an idea. 🤷♂️ As for the cosworth, that engine was tinkered with on the cheap. Frankenstien style. Id scrap most of it and start fresh. The burned valve, pistons issues with the conrods and wrist pins, oil pump and bearings its in a sad state all around.
So with my knowledge as a union cement mason, and at best shade tree mechanic skills, I could rebuild engines for a living, all I need is some cans of spray paint and presto, a new engine!!! Good for me!!!
You get what you pay for. You have to do your research on shops. I’ve been lucky to find a place many many years ago who will actually let you come in and see your engine being assembled and on the dyno.
I'm in the middle of a rather expensive Mercedes Engine restoration . The big end shells are all marked -.25 and the mains are marked Std with factory markings. But when the crank was micced , the mains were found to be .25 undersize too.... It had done many thousands of miles like that over 40 years but always had reasonable oil pressure and only a slight thumping under a load. Amazing what I find too, sometimes.
Tap. There are 3 tap shapes. Bottoming taps are to really cut just the last few threads. You should cut all but the last threads with a conventional shape tap.
not to sound like a knob mate but bottom taps are for clearing the hole and making sure the threads correct. seconding taps are to cut the last few threads followed by the bottoming tap, as they normally have a 3 thread lead (5 for first 3 for second and 1 for bottoming, although theirs a fair different desines and lead amounts. i have even seen one with 15 threads and all but 3 threads were lead.) you try cutting with a bottoming tap and they have a chance of exploding. and yea, thats a pig to sort out. ask me how i know. lol
Dear Barum Engines, sorry if this is a stupid question, but that block where you had to increase the stud/bolt holes to 11mm, what kind of configuration is the engine? I see six cylinders but they appear to be parallel in the long axis (ie not a vee) and yet are two offset lines of three cylinders which would suggest you would need two parallel crankshafts? What am I missing here please as I have never seen a block like that before?

That was like the Wheeler Dealers episode. When they bought a pinto motor. And did a FULL ENGINEBUILD... Like... fresh paint on the block and head with a paintbrush and a new rocker cover gasket.
Was it the old NA Pinto rod's and not early cosworth one's if so that's proper dodgy, was it a second hand buy or from a small workshop and could an engineer's report be done with the hopes of getting some money back?
Looking @ this from the USA....are caustic parts washers illegal in the UK? The scud on that lower outside part of the VR6 block.....This is a job of quality????? We use caustic high temprature "Jet Cleaners" in any quality USA shop....Before the motor is bored & honed and AFTER! boring/homing then thats followed by a regimine of bore cleaning using ATF fluid and lintless cleaning paper....
I hate to say this, but freshened up, rebuilt, and reconditioned all mean different things. Nor do they mean the same thing to different people. That said, that engine looks like it was probably teaching block, or something used in a tech school to teach kids auto-mechanics. As a lot of what was done, looks like what I saw when I was studying automotive repair at what use to be TSTI, which is now TSTC. The problem with teaching kids with that method is it often prompts bad habits, that are hard to break latter on.

I would love to work for a guy like you. Six months I am looking for a proper, honest and professionally ethical person to work for, to be able to give everything I know to get in return everything I deserve, but there is no chance in London. I guess I shall blame this on London,or shall I blame this on bureaucracy and profit oriented business with the blindness for technology which is not even tested properly. There is a shortage of good trades like blacksmits, coopers, carpenters, taylors, locksmiths and so on. In sixth grade, I was 12 years of age. I learned in school then Pitagora theory, which I can still calculate today, after 31 years. That's because I had a good teacher 😃, now goglegu took over the answers and not many are using the old school way. I think, respectfully, that's sad ☹️ no wonder we don't know anymore how those piramides are build and when.🤔
This is why I never buy engines that have supposedly had a ton of work and professional rebuild. The guy who's got you to look should've asked the seller to take the head off as a minimum to check the bores etc
The world is full of day dreamers. The 500 hp yb, 175hp 1600x flow, 120hp 1380 mini, 200hp pinto. Yes it's achievable, not at the money you want to spend, and certainly not in a road going application. Unrealistic people are easy prey to the man that knows a little bit more than the man that wants that engine.
Thats not even a freshen up! I always tell people, if they don't know the engine, & they cannot pull the covers & plugs to check inside with a borescope, don't pay any more than you would for a block & head! I have seen engines that look really nice from the outside. They may even have some receipts for good parts bought for it! If they haven't seen it on a dyno, or seen it go down the track,[very recently] Its most likely just somebody's junk! Recently a customer bought what looked to be a nice Nitrous V8 engine, it was only a few years old & had valve covers w a well know engine builders name on it! Well, once it was taken apart, It had a Bryant crank, that was all welded up! The pistons were different,[not uncommon for a nitrous engine] & both heads had been extensively welded on![With valves that didn't match the good ones that were in it!] So my boss feeling bad for the customer called the well known builder & asked him what was up with this POS? The Original builder went in his computer & said yes he built it, But it left his shop @ the beginning of 2017 & he had never seen it again! I was glad to find out that the well known original builder didn't do butcher work like that! So needless to say, to make it right, it needs a new superexpensive crank & Basically start over with heads, Ti & Inconel valves, Pistons, ect, ect! So Basically he got a decent block, decent rods, nice Intake & carb, decent oiling system & valve covers! So by the time he is done making it a good engine again, he is not going to be far off of what he would have paid for a brand new piece! Would it have run, probably, but the way it was, there was no way it would have lived in competition! What really gets me, was the original builders name & phone number are right on the Fing valve covers! Why he didn't call him before he handed over a bunch of cash ??? Unfckingbelieveable! LOL Hope you had a good easter!
Please use a surface check machine to check surfaces . If the drawing spec. Says 63 micro. Finish then it’s no good using your finger nail. Retired toolmaker/ Qa inspector
Similar story I hear all the time and one I have experienced myself , I once took the head from my "65" Alpine to a shop to be skimmed , new valves, guides, springs and the water ways repaired. What came back was an absolute shocker. Always go to a reputable machine shop, Always look at the work they have completed for others but most of all Always go on recommendations and the experience of others.
You have made my day I'm taking my outboard to bits and cleaning and repairing it I'm no mechanic but have fixed bike and outboards engines but at least it is not full of shit cos I've cleaned it out and won't be using araldite or rubber gloves put it back together just decent spanners and sockets and a torque wrench..and taking care to do it right cos it ain't my day job...
I have a vague memory that the 205 blocks were the sought after blocks (early 80's) but I think it was for rebuilding pinto NA version. I think it was because the walls were a bit thicker and something about tolerances being smaller (?). Anyone know if that has any truth to it or is it urban myth. I have a 2 door Mk1 Escort that I'm wondering whether to have a Pinto reconditioned (already have it) or get a 2.3 Duratec to put in it and do the mods for that conversion. (N/A)
The 200 block is best, fitted to the later 4x4 and escort cosworth engines. The RS 500 block was a 205 I think but was thicker than the normal 205s and identified by the smaller core plugs.

I local car club member won a raffle of a rebuilt engine. It ended up being put together from several engines with mismatched used pistons and heads.
I get told that I come across very pessimistic too ...but it's got a lot to do with how much I've 'seen' ...haha Cheers Lee!

They call that tap a plug tap. The first tap is called a taper tap sometimes followed by a second tap, then the plug tap. Retired toolmaker

This reminds me of when the teenage kids would slap a mud truck engine together at my dads farm shop and we would just shake our heads.

I’d say 90% of Cossie engines if not in a running car are probably tarted up scrap which is why it’s removed in the first place

Changing brake rotor diameter can change brake bias. So your fronts may lock up before the rears.
Or the opposite, as the front bites, the rear tends to lift.
Was it the old NA Pinto rod's and not early cosworth one's if so that's proper dodgy, was it a second hand buy or from a small workshop and could an engineer's report be done with the hopes of getting some money back?
Looking @ this from the USA....are caustic parts washers illegal in the UK? The scud on that lower outside part of the VR6 block.....This is a job of quality????? We use caustic high temprature "Jet Cleaners" in any quality USA shop....Before the motor is bored & honed and AFTER! boring/homing then thats followed by a regimine of bore cleaning using ATF fluid and lintless cleaning paper....
I could tell you two stories about pro engine shops who cheated me. I think the knowledge and professionalism has long gone.
I hate to say this, but freshened up, rebuilt, and reconditioned all mean different things. Nor do they mean the same thing to different people. That said, that engine looks like it was probably teaching block, or something used in a tech school to teach kids auto-mechanics. As a lot of what was done, looks like what I saw when I was studying automotive repair at what use to be TSTI, which is now TSTC. The problem with teaching kids with that method is it often prompts bad habits, that are hard to break latter on.
You mention quickly that standard head bolts aren't good for anything over standard pinto, what kind of bhp are we talking? Thanks.

That was a bad deal the 205 something you could truly be upset about depending on the money involved.
This is why I never buy engines that have supposedly had a ton of work and professional rebuild. The guy who's got you to look should've asked the seller to take the head off as a minimum to check the bores etc

The world is full of day dreamers. The 500 hp yb, 175hp 1600x flow, 120hp 1380 mini, 200hp pinto. Yes it's achievable, not at the money you want to spend, and certainly not in a road going application. Unrealistic people are easy prey to the man that knows a little bit more than the man that wants that engine.
Thats not even a freshen up! I always tell people, if they don't know the engine, & they cannot pull the covers & plugs to check inside with a borescope, don't pay any more than you would for a block & head! I have seen engines that look really nice from the outside. They may even have some receipts for good parts bought for it! If they haven't seen it on a dyno, or seen it go down the track,[very recently] Its most likely just somebody's junk! Recently a customer bought what looked to be a nice Nitrous V8 engine, it was only a few years old & had valve covers w a well know engine builders name on it! Well, once it was taken apart, It had a Bryant crank, that was all welded up! The pistons were different,[not uncommon for a nitrous engine] & both heads had been extensively welded on![With valves that didn't match the good ones that were in it!] So my boss feeling bad for the customer called the well known builder & asked him what was up with this POS? The Original builder went in his computer & said yes he built it, But it left his shop @ the beginning of 2017 & he had never seen it again! I was glad to find out that the well known original builder didn't do butcher work like that! So needless to say, to make it right, it needs a new superexpensive crank & Basically start over with heads, Ti & Inconel valves, Pistons, ect, ect! So Basically he got a decent block, decent rods, nice Intake & carb, decent oiling system & valve covers! So by the time he is done making it a good engine again, he is not going to be far off of what he would have paid for a brand new piece! Would it have run, probably, but the way it was, there was no way it would have lived in competition! What really gets me, was the original builders name & phone number are right on the Fing valve covers! Why he didn't call him before he handed over a bunch of cash ??? Unfckingbelieveable! LOL Hope you had a good easter!
Please use a surface check machine to check surfaces . If the drawing spec. Says 63 micro. Finish then it’s no good using your finger nail. Retired toolmaker/ Qa inspector

Similar story I hear all the time and one I have experienced myself , I once took the head from my "65" Alpine to a shop to be skimmed , new valves, guides, springs and the water ways repaired. What came back was an absolute shocker. Always go to a reputable machine shop, Always look at the work they have completed for others but most of all Always go on recommendations and the experience of others.

You have made my day I'm taking my outboard to bits and cleaning and repairing it I'm no mechanic but have fixed bike and outboards engines but at least it is not full of shit cos I've cleaned it out and won't be using araldite or rubber gloves put it back together just decent spanners and sockets and a torque wrench..and taking care to do it right cos it ain't my day job...

The price of any engine that cannot be fired up is a cheap lump as far as I am concerned.
I have a vague memory that the 205 blocks were the sought after blocks (early 80's) but I think it was for rebuilding pinto NA version. I think it was because the walls were a bit thicker and something about tolerances being smaller (?). Anyone know if that has any truth to it or is it urban myth. I have a 2 door Mk1 Escort that I'm wondering whether to have a Pinto reconditioned (already have it) or get a 2.3 Duratec to put in it and do the mods for that conversion. (N/A)
The 200 block is best, fitted to the later 4x4 and escort cosworth engines.
The RS 500 block was a 205 I think but was thicker than the normal 205s and identified by the smaller core plugs.
