I just discovered thrift books last year and now I have a little over a hundred books in my very small office/art studio. Most of them are very tattered and old shipped here in my country from the West. I can have 1-2 books for around 1 US dollar- a new book costs about 10 dollars here. Lots of these books have sweet notes dated 60's to the 90's and its cool reading them and imagine about the people who wrote them because I wasn't even born then and now I have these artifacts from decades ago in my hands on the other side of the world. I like your collection some of the books you showed I have them too like the Solzhenitsyn, its very rare to have books like those over here because bookstores usually sell mainstream stuffs. I'm trying to collect books so I can open a public library in my neighborhood- which is a slum area in a third world country- anyways your collection is cool! wish I could have as much as yours one day!

Here in America a new book can cost you from $30.00 and even more. I am blessed in being able to find used books in thrift stores. We also have a large public library we can get books from. Also from watching my videos I have mentioned that I volunteer at our local library used books store The Book Nook, where I have bought many used books over the years. I personally will buy any books in any shape as long as it is not underlined. I love old beat up books. The world is to me a slum and we need to pray for the Lord to bring in a New Creation. peace

I love your collection. I love the way you keep your books- about everywhere. That is how I too do keep my books, as I do not have enough shelf space.. I am a reader first, and collector incidentally as I love to keep the books I read. I have been reading and saving books for 60 years. We had difficulty in getting books here in India, but thanks to Amazon, now we get most books we look for. Availability of used hardcovers on line through Amazon is a real boon. Yet some books are not available, or affordable as yet. I have an aversion towards paperbacks, and since I only keep the books I read, I have 2000+ books now. To be with books is a great blessing.

@@saintonfire77 I started with literature- English and Indian Classics. In college, I majored in economics with history and political science. In those days (50s) our universities were quite good- they used to recommend a set of reference books, besides the textbooks. I used to read them all. This habit continued even after I left college. In the late 50s, British publishers came together and brought out excellent editions of standard classics on academic subjects under the label 'English Language Book Society". I had all their books. In the 60s, the US embassy here used PL480 rupee funds to bring out Indian editions of major American academic books at incredibly cheap prices. I had all the books available on the subjects of interest. Thus my reading and collection grew.
Indian universities used to follow a system of liberal education in which literature played a good part. So we had exposure to major English poets, Shakespeare and Victorian novelists, and other literary figures like essayists, critics. So I have a huge collection of these books. I usually like an annotated edition of poetry with introduction and other material. The Norton critical editions have served me well.
From conventional economics, I branched off into ecology following the Stockholm conference in 1972 and their book "Only One Earth" by Barbara Ward and Rene Dubois. Then came Schumacher , Steady State Economy, etc. There had been Rachel Carson and others. So I have a huge collection on these subjects.
I studied in Christian Colleges and had good Christian friends. So I had exposure to the Bible. I liked KJV., though I liked the translation of Rev.Knox. This led to study of comparative religion, though I do not like the way academics teach or treat the subject.
I have been interested in Greek philosophy and have read the whole of Plato and the old philosophers. I like their mythology, which have some common elements or themes with our own. I like the modern translations of Robin Waterfield. Naturally, I have read much of our own philosophy and religion.
I have had some exposure to science too. Here I am attracted to scientists with a mystical bend in their writing, like Fritjof Capra.
I was attracted to the old 'Mind and Matter Series' of Arrow Books, London, and later Bantam New Age Books. This exposed me to some modern writers like Jacob Needleman, Gregory Bates.
I was a student of Gandhian economics and its advocates like Richard B.Gregg. J.C.Kumarappa, etc.
On comparative mythology, we have the works of Joseph Campbell. This has its connection to Jung, which in turn leads to Erich Fromm and others.
The works of Will Durant and Arnold Toynbee and recently of Samuel Huntington throw interesting lights on world history.
American Constitutional history , especially its origin with the insight that men are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights is a source of great inspiration. Though this vital discovery is now downplayed by a distorted liberalism, the earlier historical accounts are so good. So I have quite a few volumes on American history.
I am not an admirer of much of modern literature. Among modern writers I only like a select few like Nevil Shute, A.J.Cronin, Helen MacInnes, Hammon Innes. I am a huge admirer of Louis L'Amour and have almost all his books, including his volume of poetry and autobiography. I have his entire collection of short stories in hardcover. I think he is hugely undervalued. He does not advocate or exalt or celebrate violence, and his nature descriptions are so detailed. Among recent American fiction, I only like To Kill a Mocking Bird. It has a certain civilising influence. I stopped reading fiction about 40 years ago as I found life to be more interesting than any fiction. A series like Chicken Soup For The Soul has so much interesting material drawn from real life.
Nature writing and animal stories interest me. We have remarkable writings by American authors. We have James Herriot, Gerald Durrell, Horse whisperers like Monty Roberts and Elephant Whisperers. I have a huge collection on animals and birds and flowers, Jim Corbett from the British India has contributed some remarkable chronicles, India's very own. The latest addition here is The Secret Life of Cows by Rosamund Young. This is as remarkable as Born Free was fifty years ago.
Often I am attracted by the very format of some books, like Everyman's Library or the Library of America. For a foreign student, they are an invaluable source of refined reading. I have an aversion for paperbacks and like the delightful little volumes of P.G.Wodehouse in Everyman's. I have many of their classics.
I am a conservative by political persuasion and like the works of Roger Scruton, Gertrude Himmelfarb and other modern interpreters, besides that old idol, Edmund Burke.
But, poetry and philosophy occupy pride of place in my reading. Recent books like The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday, Classical Philosophy by Peter Adamson ( and its two companion volumes) are so delightful. Annotated anthologies of poetry interest me. James Kellogg's two volume on the Greek and Roman Search For Wisdom are very good. Being a student of economics, I cannot ignore a book like Doughnut Economics by Kate Raworth. Thus my interest in reading continues, in a broad range of subjects.
Much of my time is also devoted to reading Sanskrit and Tamil works, mostly related to religion and philosophy.
Your collection is such a source of inspiration to me. I now live in Bengaluru.(Bangalore)

The Lower Level is even more packed with books 2020! It is out of control. Since this virus has caused thrift stores and libraries to shut down I have only bought a few books online. This last couple of months have caused me to question buying books all the time. What I wish I could is get rid of a couple thousand books. But at the same time I can't determine what to get rid of. Last year I donate boxes and boxes of used books to our local library Used Book store The Book Nook/got rid of everything I did not want or thought I would never get around to reading. So all that is left are the books I want to keep. Like you I mainly read nonfiction in all areas so what area do I want to get rid of is the problem. I love empty space though. I feel trapped when I see all our books down in the lower level! What I need is another house to store our books. Anyway beware of book collecting because there is no end! I should add my wife and I will soon be on a fixed income so that will cause us to slow down buying used books. I could never get rid of any of our Christian books/my Beat Collection/on and on it goes. Plain torture.

I do not remember what I said in this video about my private memoir 'The Memoir Of A Puritan Bum'. When I left Calif. to go to Bible College I burned all my diaries and I wanted a record of all that I could remember from my birth up to when Carol and I got married May 1978. So over a period of Time I wrote down all that I could remember. Sad to write most of my early memories were few. My memory can recall mainly from the egg 13 years old till the Present Time 1/26/2021. It continue to amaze me what I can not remember. My mother was killed in a car wreck when I was 16 year old (long sad story). I can not recall for example my mother cooking a meal or giving me a hug. Complete blank. I never knew my birth father. My mother was divorced for the second time when she died at 36 years old. To make this short my Life is not interesting or has been profound. I am sought since becoming a Christian (Summer 1970) to live simple Christian existence/life in a world gone insane. So my private memoir will remain buried/a memories fade and in the end does it really matter. We are here for a moment and then we are gone. Thank you for stopping by. I will be 70 years old this month. In my videos I stated I first started collecting books because I was going to be a Gospel Minister-conservative Reformed Presbyterian theological tradition. Among Reformed Calvinistic ministers they tend to have large libraries-due to being highly educated and have to have a lot of books on many different subjects. I started used books around 2005 meaning non-Christian books. I did have some old Beat books like Ginsberg and Kerouac but not much else. When I left the work world in 2007 I had time to read outside the Christian world-mental energy etc. . . I started collecting writers from my Youth and then it branched out-I like biographies-history-Art-certain writers etc. . . I have over the years found many used books at thrift stores and at used book sales-I also have volunteered for many years at our local library used books store The Book Nook where I bought many used books over the years-Friends of the Library used books sales etc. . . Around where we live there are many places-thrift stores where on can find interesting used books. I also buy books from Amazon and book publishers. I have a very large Christian library because I read like a educated Presbyterian minister even though I never went into the gospel ministry-I should state I mainly read the Bible and Christian literature but collect books on all kinds of subjects-I have many interests outside the Bible. I am also a Book Lover-I love books-all kinds of books. I love to read. Thank you for the comment. peace

Yeah I started collecting books in 2013 and only has in my estimate roughly 300 books to date mostly on German military history of WWII as pure hobby and my private passion, till now I've began to venture into some varied topics into my collection such as U.S. foreign policy and goth horror bits of economics as well. I love watching what others are in to and what genres they collect I'd say you read so varied topics more than I but I've seen others on TH-cam that's seem weird to me but hey we all collect what appeals and interest us the most right as fellow bibliophile or a bookish person.

Very nice collection. Do you ever count, how many books you have? I once tried to count books on my own bookshelf, but I lost count of 400 and something after the book. 😁 I don’t try count again.. never.

I catalogue my books in LibraryThing. Right now I have around 12,000 books. I do not know how many books my wife has. We think we have altogether 15,000 books.

I suppose in some parts of the world books are hard to come by. I am very thankful for books and being able to own them. I am also thankful I know how to read and have a brain that is functioning. I am richly blessed. I am also blessed in that I have gone to college for fours years and graduate school for three years. It is all amazing! But due to people having computers all over the world there are a lot of books online one can read.
