      I guess that's true, isn't it? I remember talking about that quite a bit. But it was always about what was the easiest and simplest way. And I would struggle so much with the automated phone systems to contact a bank or any kind of company. And I often worry about what would happen if my TH-cam channel disappeared or was hacked or simply crashed. In that situation, I'd really like to talk to a human being to fix the problem. But the modern QR code menus in restaurants and these automated ticket buying machines are so efficient and so clear and easy to use. It's actually a better experience than talking to a human clerk through the tiny holes in the bulletproof plexiglass. When I bought my ticket from the ticket counter, I really didn't understand anything the woman said and I had to ask her to repeat herself and I had to lean way over to jam my ears against the little holes. And I can't really see her because the plexiglass was so dirty. It was very unpleasant and inefficient compared to how easy it would be to buy a ticket using that machine.
      So I guess my preference for dealing with a human was never about the warmth of human contact or anything like that. It was more about whatever was most efficient and hassle-free. And in those terms lately, the machines come out on top. 😀

    The worst bus ride experience was when I went to Penang. I took a bus from the airport to Batu Ferringhi (Rapid Penang 102) but the bus driver dropped the passengers off at Komtar and told to take another bus. Waiting for another bus for too long I finally decided to take a metered taxi there.

    Port Dickson once had a rail station connecting to Seremban town until the rail service ceased in 1990s.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'd heard about that railway connection. I thought it would be very convenient because you could more easily travel from KL to Port Dickson and then hop on the ferries to Sumatra. Without a rail line, it's a bit more tricky to get there when you don't have your own car. But I didn't know that the rail service stopped as long ago as the 1990s.

      In the video, it goes by in a flash, right? I'm not sure I'm looking at the right thing, but I see some kind of structure there very briefly. But the tracks and the train station themselves must be long gone. I rode my bicycle all over Port Dickson last time I was there, and I never spotted any remnants of a rail line. Too bad it was shut down.

      @PlanetDoug  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's interesting. It doesn't surprise me, though. Technology is moving so fast. By the time I adopt a new kind of digital cash or debit card, it's usually on the way out and they're introducing a new one. 🙂 That happened with my old cash card for Kuala lumpur's MRT system as well.
      Luckily, there wouldn't be much money on this old KTM Link Card. Just a couple of leftover ringgit at most. The embarrassing thing perhaps, is that I have two of those Link cards. I don't know why I have two of them in my wallet but I do. And I guess both of them are obsolete.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's a good thought. Quite often when something won't work, it's a power problem. Easily fixed by charging the battery or something like that. But in this case, the batteries were fully charged. And I troubleshooted the camera by testing it with multiple batteries and multiple memory cards and multiple everything else over a series of days. None of that fixed the problem. It's a bit of a mystery.

    Dude is Bali to Thailand across land an insane idea?? Everyone telling me to fly . Is it doable
    Thank U

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think it's an insane idea. I think that travelling overland is always more interesting than flying. However, it takes a lot longer. And these days, it can actually be more expensive.
      I think in the old days, backpackers routinely made long overland journeys. And they did that partially out of interest but also because flying was much more expensive. But now with air travel being so affordable, it's often much cheaper to fly.
      I think in the old days, there was a fairly standard hippie-route or backpacker-route that was the reverse of what you are talking about. People would travel overland through Thailand, down through Malaysia, take a ferry to Sumatra, and then travel overland all the way through Sumara and Java to get to Bali. And there were regular stops along the way, such as Lake Toba.
      Based on my experience, it's possible to do what you're suggesting. Of course, you could travel overland across Java whether by bus or train. And then there are a whole bunch of different options to travel by boat from Indonesia to either Singapore or Malaysia. You could start from Jakarta and find a boat there. Or you could skip Jakarta and just keeping going overland to Sumatra and take one of the ferries I've been using: from Dumai or from Tanjung Balai.
      The main problem I see is one of time. Most people get only 30 days for their visa in Indonesia. And they can extend it one time for an additional 30 days. I assume you already spent a lot of time in Bali and other places. Therefore, you probably don't have much time left on your tourist visa. And you need a lot of time for an overland journey like that. And it would end up being much more expensive than simply flying.
      So, that's the question. If you want an adventure and a more interesting travel experience, an overland/boat journey would be amazing. But you have to have enough time to do it. And I think that's the biggest problem - time.

      @@PlanetDoug I'm going soon ... Planning . Thanks for Ur help by the way . I have time . I'm thinking Bali to Jakarta , allegedly 24 hour train . Then Jakarta to dumai . Allegedly a 24 hour bus . Then dumai port Dickson . ( Will they give me visa on entry for Malaysia via port ??)
      Then Kuala Lumpur to Thailand train
      (Nostops on way just travel ) So 48 hours to dumai and like 24 to Thailand . Is it 3 days travel if I get all on a row ?? Thank U 😆

    • @darcevader3769
      @darcevader3769 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@PlanetDoug are there ferry's I need to take between java and Bali and Sumatra??

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you have to take a ferry between the three islands. There are no bridges connecting them. But these ferries are relatively simple. They aren't international boats, since you aren't actually leaving Indonesia. They leave all day long on a regular schedule and are big vehicle ferries. There is no need to plan for them very much. You just show up at the dock and buy a ticket for the next ferry that is leaving and hop on.
      So for an overland journey like the one you're contemplated, you'd have to take one boat from Bali to Java and then another boat from Java to Sumatra.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've never done anything like the journey you are describing, so it's hard to say exactly how long it would take in reality. I doubt very much that it would go as smoothly and quickly as taking 3 days to travel overland from Bali to Bangkok. I think that would be something of a miracle. But if you pulled it off, it would be something to tell your grandkids about. 😀

It's a modern city with a modern transit system, but it also has lots of older and interesting traditional neighborhoods and markets.
