Dipping Into Our Wedding Funds To Renovate Our Home For $60,000 | Ugly House To Lovely House | Abode

  • Simon and Sue’s house is the embarrassment of the neighborhood, with neighbors calling it “the ugly house”. Purchased for $530,000, the couple sunk their savings into the home. With Simon working from home, sharing the space with the kids, they describe the house as a “boiling point”, adamant something has to change before they break. With a wedding in a few months, the couple have a strict $60,000. Can George Clarke transform the home into a practical space? Or will the family’s frustrations boil over?

      Agree! Married at city hall and fancy dinner with family and small number of close friends on restaurants sounds way way better.
      I'd rrather put more money towards the house or honeymoon in Spin or portugal for 2 weeks rather than paing 12,000 pounds for marriage hall.

    Moving the staircase and downstairs bathroom makes a lot of sense. The layout overall is much better. But I hate the rotating wall and by-fold doors. I think the brick is still really ugly. The entryway brick looks very different from the body of the house. And the yellow brick still looks yellow. I would have stained all the brick a deeper charcoal color.

    • @lovly2cu725

    • @rna8tive881
      @rna8tive881 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Why didn't they just paint the brick? Probably cheaper than staining it...and that rotating wall was a waste of money. I wonder how often they actually use it open?🤔

    • @mapleleaf0
      @mapleleaf0 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Heather, I agree. I wonder if painting the brick would have been the best unifying solution. I think the rotating wall doesn't make sense because when it's "open," it creates an awkward space behind it in both the living room and the kitchen. I suspect they'll just always leave it "closed."

    • @debbielockhart7762

    • @sarahdano55
      @sarahdano55 ปีที่แล้ว

      The yellow is better but they could probably have been able to paint it if they hadn't done the rotating wall, useless thing really. But the byfold door can actually be useful. If you're watching tv in that snug in the evening and the rest of the house is already in bed, this "door" can probably lower the sound a bit.

    Is there a powder room on the 1st floor? I had a townhouse with no 1st floor powder & it was a pain, I would have liked to see the floor plan slowly bc I dont understand why the stairs had to be moved.

    • @mapleleaf0
      @mapleleaf0 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      At 13:03 you can see a WC (ie powder room) off the new stairwell on the first floor. Also, if you want to watch anything more slowly, you can play it at a slower speed by going to the gear icon at the bottom right of the screen. Click on it and you will see where you can change the playback speed. If I don't want to fool with that, sometimes I just pause the video to look at floorplan layouts. Where the stairs were originally created a small space to the left of the stairs both upstairs and down. By moving them to the right, the space to the left became large enough for a larger kitchen downstairs and a new bedroom for their son Max upstairs. Hope that helps.

      Cheap, yes, but neither flimsy nor weak. And considering they had a tight budget, bless the architect for being creative with materials.
