Nerdarchy explores another 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons kill combo that might just break the game. It will require your whole 5e D&D adventuring party to work together. The bard, druid, sorcerer, ranger, and wizard must team up using D&D spells to pull it off. But it'll be enough to make any Dungeon Master want to pull out their hair.

I remember one time, I was playing a celestial pact of the chain warlock and the DM described an ancient dragon chained to a gate we had to get through with adamantine dimension chains (homebrew on the shackles) so it couldn't escape. I asked how long the chains were.
"about 20ft long so it can still move a little"
"cool, cool, cool, I cast sickening radiance and it dies. We can roll all 100 saves but it only has to fail 6 and I can just cast it again if it happens to make 95 of them..."

If you don't get surprise, then ready your action to cast SR after the target has finished moving. This way they get first lvl exhaustion when cast and second lvl at start of their turn - before they get to do anything. Next have someone else cast Ottollo's Resilient Sphere. Both spells are 30' and SR can't extend out past the sphere. Your party now surrounds the sphere and keeps it in place as you watch, like a fishbowl, the target suffer and eventually die from exhaustion.

    Plant Growth.
    Sickening Radiance.
Eldritch Blast with Grasp of Hadar, Lance of Lethargy, and Repelling Blast.
You control how far they're allowed to go. Always keep them in the circle. Knock them back, pull them in, slow them down.
Pretty sure this is all you need.
I'd recommend taking 5 levels of Sorcerer, too, so you can Subtle Spell Counterspell, or Distant Spell Counterspell any attempts at Dispel Magic.

For my character which is trying to become a lich later. His false phylacteries will have glyphs of warding on them that cast otilukes resiliant sphere, sickening radiance, cloudkill, and after 18 seconds of being picked up cast finger of death on closest target. This creates a near indestructible ball that ,after 10 minutes, releases a zombie that attacks anyone else nearby while the sickening radiance and cloudkill spread.

In my first one-shot that I ran three weeks ago, this spell came up twice.
The 3rd trap the players encountered in the dungeon was a glowing green pillar in the middle of a 40x40 room with one entrance and one exit. When they opened the exit, they activated a gust of wind glyph that through the wizard to the other side of the room and slammed the entrance shut. She would have died in that room if the paladin had not ran back and carried her out
For the penultimate encounter, they opened a door to a room filled with magical darkness and some kind of undead. The shadow monk bamfed in and tried to determine where the exit was. He learned that the room was 40 feet long (I like this dimension) and had one door leading out that required a Strength (thieve's tools) check to open. I then told him he could feel a creeping chill approach, and he left. He and the paladin then decided to lure the undead to the door so that the wizard could fireball them. Unfortunately for them, the wizard rolled low, and undead in question were shadows which have fire resistance. The shadows then proceeded to almost kill the monk (knocked him down to a Strength of 1) and render the paladin unable to wear armor. It was at this point that the wizard remembered sickening radiance. She centered it 15 feet past the door, slammed the door shut, and spent the next two rounds listening to the shadows scream.

You drop Sickening Radiance on yourself, and then use Sentinel to keep the bad guy from moving anywhere until it dies. Meanwhile, you have beefed up your CON saves so much that it is almost impossible to affect you. Damn. Also, a not to the spells you mentioned, pretty sure Spike Growth won't do any damage since they won't be moving more than a foot or two per round. Still useful for the difficult terrain though.

A combo based around a 4th level spell that requires a 5-person party that specifically includes a bard, druid, sorcerer, ranger, and wizard who all work together and can still take up to 5 rounds of combat does not come anywhere close to breaking the game. Either tie them up with rope, use caltrops, have your rogue roll sleight of hand in stealth to cut their belt and drop their pants (if they’re humanoid) to slow their movement, or if you’re sorcerer use careful spell on an ally who can grapple them. There are ways outside of just magic that can help is my point

I used this while being the DM, the players had finally found their way to the labyrinthian tomb where a key item was protected by a lich. Now what they didn't know (two nat 1s on while gathering info, the dice hath spoken) was that the lich made this place for his safety, they thought it was made to keep us safe from him. Anyway they start going into this place and find out that aside from the entrance the rest of the place is cast in magical darkness, they begin to feel the walls to slowly map out their route, feeling strange glyphs and slots or holes, they figure its a way to track where they are or a story about the lich and pay it no mind, continuing along their way, they get toward the middle after like two hours of wrong turns and mis-mapping, and such, they even opened some backwards shortcuts without realizing and then took them. Anyway they reach the center and notice a light glowing into the corridor and kinda oozing out from the holes and slats in the walls, thinking this must be the item they were looking for overcoming the darkness they rushed into the center room, as they entered the lich was sitting upon his throne and turned toward them, in his hand the item they wanted. They turned tail and ran back into the dark tunnels, however the lich’s light followed them, it seemed to ebb and wane as they turned corners but it never seemed to go away, in fact it drew nearer, eventually they started to get hit with it as they had to dash through to get along the tunnels, each person slowly succumbing to the effects. Turns out the labyrinth walls allowed the lich to sense life through it and he knew shortcuts and hidden trap wall triggers to pin them in. Since they had no-one who could see, had no-one paying attention to the walls, and so forth thus he was able to stay safe, ping them with cantrips through the slots, and pin them into a trap with the light.

The effect triggers each turn that a character moves into the area for the first time. Each. Turn. Not round. Each turn means you can force an opponent to move into the space on your turn and provoke the effect.
So can your druid with thorn whip and your warlock with pull/push effects of eldritch blast. A barbarian at the edge of the effect can pirouette after grappling a creature in the space. His battlemaster friend can order the barbarian to move the poor enemy out and back into the space on the fighter's turn.
If you can make a character move against their will, abuse it with this spell. Just don't let your caster lose concentration. :)

Stinking Cloud, if it sticks, cancels their action but they retain their bonus action and their move action, so it won't restrain them. Sleet Storm is the best control spell for comboing with Sickening Radiance, as the 80' diameter of the SS nicely complements the 60' diameter of the SR. It's especially nice once they hit level 2 exhaustion (half-movement).

Firstly, great video guys, as usual. This idea is fun, and great for mooks, but a boss for a 5 person party at 7th level would be CR 12 or higher. If you're dealing with something with legendary resistances, they're going to ignore your set up, and you've lost many of your high level spells to do it. Still cool, just maybe not a great plan for boss killing

    • @Nerdarchy

      @1217BC 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Nerdarchy The problem is, at CR 12 and higher, many monster's abilities start making these tactics less and less functional. Just look at the 3 CR 12s in the MM. The Arcanaloth has magic resistance, an inate fly speed, the ability to teleport or turn invisible at will, and can cast up to 8th level spells, including counterspell. The archmage has magic resistance and damage resistance from spells, and casts up to 9th level spells, including counterspell, fly, and teleport. The erinyes has magic resistance, a pretty good CON save, truesight, and an inate fly speed. As CRs go up, it tends to get worse. Like I said, it's great for groups of lower level enemies, but the bosses you should be seeing once you're able to cast this spell aren't so threatened by it. Some would still be susceptible, but not most. At seventh level, using your 1 fourth level slot for this spell on a boss isn't likely to be a great use.

Our party used a combo like this but we got to level 12. Our bard would use Wall of Force and the Warlock would use Sickening Radiance. Our Druid usually threw in a Flame Sphere and the Sorcerer would use a spell that gave disadvantage on saving throws. It was a fun combo but we didn’t use it unless it was a really dangerous group. Otherwise our Druid was moon and found ways to get resistance to bludgeoning, slashing, piercing, lightning and fire plus immune to poison. He was our tank....

I made a Hill Dwarf Draconic Sorcerer, Pact of the Fiend. 12 loc/8/Sorc. Polearm Master, Warcaster, Spell Sniper, Tough and Great Weapon Master. They cast green-flame blade twice a turn, or twinned booming blade, green-flame as bonus action. They add cha mod from life drinker invocation on each weapon attack used in the Blade cantrips. Then, draconic sorcerer adding cha mod to each casting of Green-flame. Lastly, add great weapon master to the damage. Using a glaive for green-flame: 2d10+14d8+cha mod x6+20(great weapon master). That's not including str mod(belt of giant strength) or magical weapon boosts. Reaction to cast booming blade from 10ft(spell sniper) away. If the target moves another 5ft towards you, then they take the second damage trigger of booming blade.
It's a Sorcerer Warlock with 14 AC and 228HP. They use spells like Investiture of Flame, Armor of Agathys and Fire Shield, so low AC, high HP is great for inviting attacks. Plus, fiendloc generating temp hp each kill

Until one day, we had an intense battle against devils, which our DM warned us that it would be better to run and escape. We decided not to and came up with a plan. We were on a 20-foot wide bridge. The sorcerer started by casting Sleet Storm. Then closer to us, the bard used Stinking Cloud. Then overlapping both of those attacks, I used Sickening Radiance. Our Monk used her open hand tech to knock back any survivors that managed to get through. After 5 rounds most of the huge army was dead or dying. My DM was happy to see us finally working together, however, she was frustrated that it took a year and a half to do so.
