  • This is how to connect your computer to your VAG Cable. This also shows how to get your computer talking to your car. I'm using a "VAG KKL" the version is 409.1. Make sure you buy the correct cable, mine was $3 on EBay, I've used the same one for 5 years now. Once you set the COM port on your computer to 1,2,3 or 4 you should be good to go. Any questions just ask! Like and Subscribe!

    For all of those, this is not working: I needed to download the "CH340 driver" and after that the cable was recognized and not simply "USB serial" after that to change the port I had to normally double left click it to be able to set the port.(clocking right/properties did not give me an option to change the port)
    Hope this helps.

    How to enable an non-genuine copy of VCDS.
    Tested with HEX-V2 hardware clone adapter from 2017 and VCDS 2018
    1. disconnect everything (Data cable, internet and antivirus)
    2. Open the VCDS file containing the installer
    3. Install the VCDS file you need, make sure the install path will be C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS[XXXX] [in case its an alternative version, it can add something after the VCDS, like "Pri" in case if its a dutch reseller that sold the program to you.
    4. once the installation is finished, you'll be asked if you wish to open the program, choose NO.
    5. Now, if you have installed it and ready to go, you should also have another folder that contains the following file; "VCDSloader", this is your unofficial application that you will use to open the program. So there are two seperate files, VCDS.exe and VCDSloader.exe, both in seperate files.
    6. Drag the VCDSloader.exe file INTO your installation path, in this case that should be
    C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS. You'll see many files there, its how it's supposed to look like.
    7. Now, for easier purposes, make a shortcut of VCDSloader.exe for easier access, whilst its inside C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS folder. That shortcut you can place wherever you can access it easiest from, most often the desktop.
    8. [Plug in hardware into OBD and laptop, it is supposed to give a constant green light, if it flikkering or gives any other colour, search online what it means.]
    9. Now you may start up the program trough the shortcut, NOT TROUGH THE VCDS.EXE PROGRAM inside the folder, but the VCDSLOADER shortcut, or just simply the original vcdsloader file INSIDE the installation folder.
    10. When you start it up, you'll notice that all options are greyed out besides "options". Thats because the program does not know which hardware you connected with the false software. So, press "options", then press "Test" on the screen. You will most likely find out that your software will indicate either that it hasn't found any hardware or that it the Com-port has no reaction with the hardware
    11. If no connection, that means your USB driver probably isn't set up right. Go to device management and look up Com-port and USB-drives.
    12. You'll most likely see two instances ; 1. There is no com-port, but there is a ROSSTECH HEX-USB drive in the USB section. 2. There is a com-port, AND there is a ROSSTECH HEX-USB drive present. In the both situations, I advice to uninstall the "ROSSTECH" driver completely and unplug your hardware from your laptop. Then plug it back in and you'll notice that there is now an "Unknown USB" present with a yellow icon (in another situation, you might still see the same as before, if thats the case remove it again).
    13. Now, in the folder which you received from the vendor, the one where the original VCDS was where you installed the application from, also contains a USB-driver set-up. You can either run it with a set-up (if it's included) or do it manually. If you want to do it manually, go back to device manager > Unknown USB > update driver > Manual install > Driver location. If the driver is correct, and you did it correctly, you should now see "ROSS-TECH HEX-USB with VCP" in the USB drives, along with a new available COM-PORT.
    14. [Skip this step if your com-port is either 1,2,3 or 4. if its higher, READ THIS!]
    If your comport is 5 or higher, VCDS will not recognise it in the "options" menu. So, go to Device manager>comports>properties>2nd tab (i believe) advanced, here you can change the current com-port to another number. You have to place it either at 1-2-3-4. Anything above that will result in a defect software.
    15. So, if you did everything correct, you can now open VCDSloader again [TURN ON IGNITION!!!], then go to "options" then go and first test USB. If everything is perfect, it should give you a short list of stuff like
    Comport : OK
    Interface : FOUND!
    CAN : OK
    etc.
    When you test your com-port, (make sure you pick the right number) you should also get a confirmation with "COMPORT : OK, INTERFACE : FOUND!".
    So, right now you should be able to fully use all functions of VCDS.
    If you get an issue of "Interface not found" or "comport not connected", you can :
    1. make sure antivirus is off
    2. Test the same program on another volkswagen
    3. Test other USB ports (common)
    4. Make sure you turned on the ignition when testing
    5. Check if the hardware is properly connected and gives off LED lights when testing/idle
    If all fails, always search more info on google or contact your vendor.
    This is how i did it for me personally, but i couldn't get it to work on a Volkswagen crafter 2008, because you need an extension for the hardware. The engine of a Volkswagen Crafter is a mercedes engine. So, tough luck.

    after configuring and testing the ports, we still get a "no response from the controller" on some of the scans. for instance the engine module won't connect but the auto trans module will. what issue might that be?

    • @ChristopherCameronAudiRepair
      @ChristopherCameronAudiRepair  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply!! I bet this is because of a bad module in the car. I have that happen on a lot of B5 models that have a bad module. Sometimes I unplug the radio if the scan isn't working, or I unplug the module I suspect of being the problem. For example, if the car is showing all the signs of a bad abs module (ABS lights on, Break light flashing, 3 beeps), and VAG-COM isn't communicating with any other modules, I unplug the ABS module then do a scan. If this doesn't work, the radios on the B5 are known to mess with the K-line (I think it's called K-line for B5), so I'll unplug that next, and try to scan. If all this doesn't work, then there is a different module that is out or has a short/intermittent connection. Let me know if this helped or if you need some more ideas. What model are you working on? Cheers!

      hmmm, does windows let you know that the adapter was plugged into your computer? Windows will do a notification beep when a usb device is plugged in and recognized, if windows doesn't do this beep it's cause of the port. If you don't see ports in the device manager, try to plug in a usb device other than the VAG cable, and see if the ports option shows up. You might have a bad cable, which does happen too, I had one.

    • @bencrosbie
      @bencrosbie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for the reply. yes it does acknowledge the usb with sound and the sign that device is plugged in and i also tried other usb ports. and shows the usb controllers section in the device manager. sooo when i test the lead without plugging into the car it says interface found bla bla not pluged into the car then when i plug it into the car it says post status is ok bla bla the interface is not found. the green light is on the plug anyways. tried com1,2,3,4 and usb even tried led button. but still cant save changes because of it.

    • @ChristopherCameronAudiRepair
      @ChristopherCameronAudiRepair  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And you switched to COM1,2,3 and 4 in device manager (accordingly) every time you tried it the VAG-COM app? I'm assuming if it says post status is okay, that the cable should be working fine. If you have another car you can try to get a scan off of, it would help a bunch. I have a couple Audi's so if VAG-COM isn't connecting to my new project car, I'll try on another car to see if VAG-COM is just being stubborn. I find plugging in the cable to the computer first (listen for notification beep), then plug into the car, then turn the power for the car on (but not running, unless I'm checking measuring blocks), then open up VAG and check connection, works the best for me. Sometimes the order it's done in can cause problems. Let me know if this works, if not, you should try to connect to a different (VAG compliant) vehicle to see if it connects, then we can get a good idea on which end it stems from. It could be a bad cable, or it could be a problem with a module in the car. I think these are the only two problems it could be at this point. Let me know if it works, I'll be online :] Cheers!

      Yeah post status ok and tried all the ports. Its funny i couldnt come across ports in device manager but vcds wouldnt attempt amd say ports not exist interface not found. Only the usb where it says port ok then the numbers and inferface not found. The vcds im using is 18.2.1 its supposedto he the right software anyways as I was told. And yeah could be any of them as you say but ive a bad feeling the cable shit itself :S cheers for your help really appreciate it man ill let you know after i mess around with it. When the cable is plugged into the laptop does it show the ports tab in device manager? If you don't have any usb devices plugged in the ports tab will be hidden. But if the laptop doesn't show ports tab after the USB is plugged in, try to plug in a different usb device and see if it comes up maybe. A usb mouse or thumb-drive would work. There are a few different types of CAN cables too. I got a "Dual-K & CAN, VAG12.12" cable and it wouldn't communicate with my model. I also had the correct cable that worked for like 5 weeks and then shit the bed. Let me know how it goes for sure! Cheers broski!

      You should only need to buy the cable, and vag-com. Does your laptop/PC notice when you plug it in through USB? Or does your car not notice that the cable is connected, and did you make sure to you got the correct cable for you vehicle? VCDS should have a cable chart that will show you which cable connects to your ECU. They have K-line, HEX, and a few others I believe. Let me know (if you haven't already got it working), Cheers

      That could be the port setting, it has to be on port 1,2,3, or 4. Sometimes windows will assign it to 5,6,7,8... So you'll have to change it manually in device manager. Look under USB devices and you should see the cable. Let me know if this helped at all, sorry for the late reply! Cheers

      Hey, you have to designate port 1-4. If windows already assigned that port to something else you have to manually change it. I believe it's in device manager, but it's been awhile. You should be able to plug the cord in and it'll pop up in device manager. You could search "device manager" in windows and it'll bring it up for you. Then look for USB devices. Let me know of this helped at all, if not I can try to be more specific. Gluck! Cheers

      Hey, sorry for the late response. You want to use an open COM port, so 3 is normally a safe bet (unless you have a lot of USB hardware connected to your laptop or have had a lot connected in the past). As long as the adapter is set to COM 3 and windows is set to COM 3 you should be good to go on VAG-COM side of things. Once you plug the adapter in, does windows beep or make a sound to let you know the USB adapter is plugged in?

      @ChristopherCameronAudiRepair  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gui Felix, does the red light turn on to show the vag cable is on (if it has one), or do you hear the chime from windows letting you know the USB device has been plugged in? It must show up on device manager if you set the controller to COM 3. You could try a different COM port, COM 3 could be reserved by/for something else on your laptop. You can only use up to COM 4. Try each one, and remember to change on VCDS and device manager. If that doesn't work it is possible you have a bad cable. Which version of windows are you running?

    • @guilhermefelix1565
      @guilhermefelix1565 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Cameron yes. The red light is on. When i plug the usb on computer, for windows is ok. But when i try to conect on vcds COM ports, not happens. The error still happening.

    • @ChristopherCameronAudiRepair
      @ChristopherCameronAudiRepair  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm.. If you tried all 4 of the COM ports, then I would return the adapter for a different one. There is only a few things that can go wrong. Since we know windows is talking to the adapter, I would say it's either the VCDS software or a broken/defective adapter. If this doesn't help you might want to give Ross-tech a call.

    Cant get mine working

    • @ChristopherCameronAudiRepair
      @ChristopherCameronAudiRepair  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey sorry for the late reply! I have had times when vag-com can't communicate to the ECU due to too much interference from the radio. Unplugging the the radio fixed it.
      However if you can't get your PC to detect it the cable that's another thing all together. Make sure you don't have anything connected to your PC/Laptop. If you did have anything else connected that might have reserved one of the ports 1-4 (vag-com requires one of those ports) then you might need to manually assign one of those ports for your adapter.
      Another thing it could be is a faulty adapter, I received one from Ebay that didn't work at all with my first Audi. It's nice if you have a different car you can test it on to make sure it's not just the car having problems with communicating.
      One question, when you plug in your adapter does windows make a sound to let you know a peripheral device was plugged in? If you plug in an external mouse it should make the same noise as the adapter would make if it was plugged in.
      Also, does the light on the adapter light up, and are you sure you have the right adapter, I think K-line and HEX should both work.
      It could also be a module that's hanging it up, or have you checked you diagnostic fuse is good, and all the connection pins are there and in good shape?
      Do you have an aftermarket radio interface? That could also hold things up, If your 100% sure the adapter and the laptop are working good, try unplugging the radio, or if you have any warning lights on (maybe for abs or something) you could try unplugging the module that you have a suspicion could be bad. I believe on a A4 B5 model I was working on once, it had a door lock pump that got soaked with water (it was located in the trunk) and it wouldn't connect with vag-com until I had the radio and the pump disconnected. Let me know if any of this helps if not I have a few other ideas. Cheers!
