This video was a better balance on new style, the prev. one was a hard watch. Audio bit better although quite inconsistent in volume and clarity. Felt more comfortable in front of camera man! Less silly angles now too. Appreciated adding the "selfie" style parts for more classic Barry. :) Could still do with a steadycam/tripod for a slightly less nauseating wobble but excited to see where you take it!
It was bizarre. I have to be honest that i've been thinking about that since then and my whole life just feels a lie that it didn't really taste of lemon

Hey, thanks. We are a loooooong way off yet but are working away to get a good balance, it takes a bit of time to introduce the feedback into videos and some are easier than others
@fluffy-Muffin to some extent I agree people can resist change but also more and more channels are producing content for the younger generation that can't watch videos without losing interest if there isn't 100 jump cuts and trying to be funny on camera. Also so the videos can be condensed into TH-cam shorts and tiktok videos which again is for the audience with no attention span

I loved it when I lived in Italy, because plum cake (this lemon loaf or any fruity quick bread qualify as plum cake) and cookies are common breakfast staples. You didn’t even need an excuse to eat cake for breakfast.
Yep deffo, I think my bright eggs changed the colour a bit too! I reckon the Starbucks is more pound cake style also to a degree, but was super happy with the final taste!
Had a super stressful day with road closures On the way to the station and then train delays there and back (Tim Minchin thankfully was great and worth the pain and stress) so coming home to a Barry video is the best. Never been this late to a video 😂
Hiya Barry! Great seeing you Mrs and Mr Lewis! I really like the lemon loaf cake. Have you tried it in cake form same buttermilk in the recipe, but a huge pan. What I like to add after putting holes in it that helps with moisture is lemon jello. I just follow the recipe for jello making on the stove top, and then pour it over the cake before setting in the fridge for the lemon jello to set within the cake, and then other toppings can be added. Now I'm the one craving some cake! 🤣😂 Thank you very much for this video!!!

For self preservation I had to limit making these cakes to one extravagant delicious cake to 1-4 times a year for special celebrations. Love seeing my family light up knowing I've made some special.
I like those types of cakes if they are really moist, otherwise you need four liters of milk for a single slice. My mother used to bake austrian "Gugelhupf" which also can be dry as hell if done wrong.
Here's a thought: What if the caramelized lemon zest was made by putting unstrained lemon syrup over the top of the cake whilst it was still baking? I've got a really simple recipe for it. 1:1 lemon juice & sugar zest of the lemons you juiced Boil it all together until sugar is dissolved and syrup is slightly thickened. Mind you, I've seen others that get fru-fru with it by adding in limoncello, food grade lemon oil, and candied lemon peel. Play around with those if you want, mine is the basic recipe you can make with a quick stop to any market and it's perfectly zingy and delicious. My thought is that the syrup would add that candy glaze on top and keep the cake moist.

If you don’t have a skewer to test a cake to see if it’s done, you can use a piece of uncooked spaghetti. In the US a lemon is considered something faulty, for example an inferior car is called a lemon, so when life gives you lemons, refers to making something good out of the bad.
Dunkin just recently started selling individually wrapped lemon loaf here in the U.S.A. with the big glazed top. I haven't tried it yet, but won't be able to compare it to Starbucks because I don't go there for anything!!

Yep deffo, it's extremely similar! I'd normally put holes all the way through with a skewer so it soaks into the sponge for a drizzle, but i'd never turn any lemon cake down lol

I think the phrase of "when life gives you lemons", it's about making the best out of a bad situation, cos there's often always something positive to work towards, even in the face of adversity, or some fluff like that... :P

I would suggest do not put sugar over the candied peel and place peel into the syrup you are pouring on top of the cake to make the bits stick to cake. Sugar crystals create more crystals in any liquid as it stands. Thats why when making syrups they say brush the side of pot to melt all the crystals

Tip: Weigh the eggs, then use the same weight in flour, sugar and butter. This works for most cakes.
I only learned this a few weeks ago from my mum. It's bloody genius!
