Being all comfortable and having all the bells and whistles, it’s no brainer that X70 is a value for money SUV. Say all you want about Proton and Geely, at least Proton bring a very good car to Malaysians with not just a good look but also safe and practical. Well done. 👏🏻

At this price point for X70 is no word to say any bad on it , it does really drive well compare to the CRV . Even the XV does really does a good job in term of ride and handling . Basically CRV are practical and the fastest here but I don’t really enjoy much and feel fun inside the car compare to both of it rival . it was a good Video tho ! Kudos to Proton and Well Done for all Paultan team for bringing us the detail review .
The mass market consumers that jump on the suv bandwagon are mainly looking for practicality, comfort and taller driving position. That’s the reason why Subaru still remains as niche player here, coz not a lot of people buy suv with fun to drive as priority. Being a tall suv, the fun factor is never be as good as a lower car due to law of physics. If I want a fun to drive car, I will either buy a sporty sedan like Mazda 3 or hot hatch like vw golf. Just my 2cents.
Thank you Geely for willing to buy Proton share even Proton not willing to sell more than 50% to Geely. One model from Geely manage to save Proton and thus save so many employees of Proton. And the most important, government does not need to take tax payer money to save Proton!
There's no doubt that the X70 is a superior car which incorporates the current technological innovations. Honda and Subaru have been overcharging us for outdated technology. There is no EyeSight on the CKD Subaru which is standard on overseas models. X70 and Binyue (reported to be coming soon) will definitely be market leaders.

I guess all new X70 owners are proud with their ownership of this SUV. its an all rounder with a bargain price tag. just lacking of the LKAS that Honda CRV has. If not it will be the best of all. salute to Hafriz, Harvinder and Matt for their review on this car. I already test drove the x70 and it really amaze me. 140 kmh is reached without sweating my feet and the salesman said he did reach 220 kmh when he took it from Tanjung Malim to Shah Alam on Guthrie Hiway.
220kmh downhill I believe, x70 doesn’t have a very good hp to weight ratio. It will take a very long stretch of road if it is even possible to reach that speed. Secondly, Boyue back in China is known to have weaker braking distance than competitors, abs doesn’t work perfectly. Good luck driving so fast, if you don’t mind your own safety be mindful of others.
XV just average??? Dude u better check out subaru XV indonesia and check where they drive their XV... its not your average car the XV can go offroad ( not extreme one)
This is just my own opinion comparing to suv benchmark, which is crv and x70. I'm currently a civic fc owner, having test drive the crv, it feels not so much difference between Civic and Crv interior, instead the crv is higher, bigger and better suspension. Then i test drive the x70, now u can really feel the difference, it really stand out and has the continental feel inside and outside. Talk about the reliability it still no genuine answer, but the gen 5 crv is very well known with the gear knob issue, steering rack problem, and lower arm faulty, luckily the emblem is H, if it's the tiger, then it would be a complete chaos and main issue to bash. If you're considering to own a suv, do test drive the X70, and compare it with the crv, it really² different level, the crv feels more cheap, and the gear knob change sound very² loud. It is all the all small little detail that makes X70 worth buying, especially with that kind of price, it is a bargain.

And i get the logic by pitting it against the best c-segment suv and another with one on the price range, but poor XV it didnt stand a chance in this match-up. maybe customers in their 20s can appreciate it more imo

If you don't, your alternatives are from the class below, and you'd struggle to find something better than the XV.
Out of the trio, I would pick the Proton X70 because it has a courageous stance from the exterior, scrumptious interior with loads of premium material, a well refined driving experience and is good value for the money.
Finally! I personally will choose Proton X70 because of the value that it has. Plus it looks very handsome compared to the other two. Clearly I can see Hafriz is very proud with his X70. Btw do we need to wait another 7 months for another Driven episode? 😆
x70 is really a head turning suv. there is one in my place. parked. i walked beside it without even knowing its a proton. i turned back to double confirm. lol
I m owner of Harrier 2.0 and x70, in term of comfort, performance,, features,, x70 won in all aspect with just half of price. If you are choosing between Harrier and x70, I highly recommend x70.
Power wise, non can beat the CX5 diesel. That is just damn powerful (of course diesel has more torque haha). But spec wise, the X70 is amazing. Those nappa leather seats are so comfortable and whats funny is that not even a 370k Merc has that LOL.

I'm a x70 CBU user for 1year and my car did 20k of mileage, these are the problems arises 1. The steering always steer to the left from , what proton did was an alignment everytime I raise this issue, the problem still there. 2. My car gear change when I flaw the throttle very harsh and scary, this happens the 4th month when I brought the car for a long drive to Cameron. 3. 2nd hard gear change is from way down from genting it just drop very harshly from 6th to 4th suddenly then it ran smoothly. 4. 3rd hard gear change when it was on Adaptive Cruise Control from malacca when a car comes in front it suddenly dropped very harshly. 5. My car always wobbles/vibrate when the speed 50kmh -80kmh after that speed it rides smoothy. 6. My car always wobbles/vibrate when climb uphill 70kmh- 100kmh. This is even happens either I drive the car or its on Adaptive Cruise Control. 7. Already two time I address this issue to proton, proton said there is software update for CBU models which is latest software is 005 and my model was running on 000 software update. Proton didn't even notify us until my 3rd service, only when the problem arise they update the software. 8. Proton said they need to open my gearbox to check why it wobbles/vibrate. How sure this will be solved, my car is just 1 year old and I'm not confident with what they going to do. I just don't want another new problem arise from this issue. 9. I'm just not happy on how proton is handling this issue, is this how they solve issue, everytime I need to send the car for the whole day and they problem still there. 10.This is really not helpful, my time and my money to send the car and had to take grab to work. 11. Even my friends warn me to not buy x70 when it launch, I bought it on the confident that they might have improved and I would like to support proton. 12. To all x70 CBU owners kindly go to service center and update your TCU software. 13. Very seldom I use this car and it gives this kind of problems, my daily drive myvi is even better and I had no issues even though it has done 160k km. 14. I was even thinking of buying x50, after all this matter with x70 I have no confidence with next proton cars. 15. Hopefully TH-cam reviewers can help me on this matter to add in your reviews because before buying anything we always trust your reviews before buying new cars.
If im on the market for an SUV under 200k, I think the X70 would be my pick of the bunch as well. The CRV looks too weird for me, the XV is just a jacked up hatch, the CX5 looks better n is nicer to drive im sure, but is 20k more expensive, the xtrail is pretty much dated nowadays, the HRV CX3 and CHR r too expensive for what they r which r just B segment SUVs. So X70 for me as well.

Zaman dah berubah. Buat masa sekarang, SUV tidak lagi dipandu seperti yang saudara bayangkan. Majoriti besar kenderaan seperti ini dibeli dan digunakan untuk menggantikan model-model sedan, dan kebanyakannya tak pernah dipandu pada jalan off-road pun. Malah, model Proton dan Honda (kedua-duanya 2WD) dalam uji pandu ini juga tidak direka untuk dipandu pada permukaan yang lasak. Jadi, kami rasa ia adalah lebih sesuai untuk menguji dan menilai kereta-kereta ini seperti yang akan digunakan oleh bakal-bakal pemilik - sebagai kereta harian, dan bukan SUV off-road.
The clincher for my money is the one with the quietest ride, the best sound system, and the best ride at high speed on the Malaysian Highway. For that Proton comes out the best of the 3 makes. Value for money comes a near second place, but it is nevertheless a bonus that Proton is by far the best value for money out of the 3 choices by far. Use the money saved for your house items? Why not?
what ppl didnt know is that the early batches of the X70 is based by Volvo.. hence it will be better than the upcoming batches which will be purely by Geely..
Geely's joint venture with Proton is a smart move. it means it's tendency to share technology with malaysia instead of a independent foreign car brand. but after all, this one is engineered by Volvo team, at low cost.
Everything seems nice about the X70 except the exterior looks. It's like a box and a monster meshed together. I'll pick the XV anytime for its smooth engine and great looks. However, I totally agreed that the infotainment LCD is horrible.

first of all, lets agree that CRV is undisputed rockstar of the SUV c-segment. Been there, done that. The name alone had enough pulling power compare to others esp in Malaysia. Having said that, X70 is a very good options (full 40k cheaper for the top variant). Should've put CRV as the benchmark and having CX5/Tiguan for direct segmental comparison and HRV/CX3 for price. CRV still the best in direct comparisons, but boy do X70 give a good shout out for potential buyer.
In the end......test drive sendiri lah ya. You may have some clear picture here but you better drive it to see what suits your style and needs. No point arguing, ini bias lah, ini copy lah, ini x sedap lah, ini tipu lah. It's just shows one's ignorance. Go test drive. Be a better Malaysian. Btw, great review paultan.

Yes there will be a ckd model. Maybe in october. Just waiting for the tg malim plant to be finish. 1 more things, if im not mistaken, there wouldn't be a 1.5tgdi. Only 1.8tgdi. And the price would be differ around 10% at max.

Do not cheat ourselves that X70 is cheap Volvo. There is differentiation. I always hear people say now Volvo is china car (they are not afford to own volvo) and Proton X70 is Volvo technology (when they buy Geely and hope that it is Volvo).
LOL X70 is totally unrelated to any Volvo tech. The chassis and platform is unrelated to Volvo's models and is instead used only for Geely's domestic midsized vehicles. The initial 1.8TGDi plus 6-speed auto powertrain is also unrelated to Volvo. The X50 on the other hand can legitimately be considered a "budget XC40" because it shares the platform and powertrain with the XC40.
Probably a good thing. Newer model/revision will iron out issues with first batch, perhaps will also have Proton's input in the ride and handling department.
I agree with Hafiz's conclusion. Each opinion may have its merit. But does it answer the purpose of the review? If its by order of price, comfort, performance and fuel economy, x70 is the best pick. Nuff said.
CRV - biggest, priciest, clunkiest, unstable at high speed, loudest. Pretty much everything i would avoid in buying a car for everyday use in Malaysia 😂
The quality is quite horrendous honestly which is quite a pity. When I rode in one I absolutely hated how the soundproofing was so horrible, close to non-existent. But the Honda Sensing is pretty good stuff, the 1.5T is quite punchy and the interior is very roomy and comfortable.
Proton X70 equipped with a license plate WAL1118. Currently, new vehicles in Federal Territory of KL usually start of with the letter V. I have a car that has a license plate of WM... something (I wont expose my car details here), and it was over 10 years old. This X70 is over a decade old?

Tan Jack yes the X70 has a full 5-star ASEAN NCAP crash safety rating. Its scores are even higher than the CR-V, in fact.

Very true! I am also quite surprised when I compared these units and drove these units for a test drive. The X70 was awesome with the DNA of Volvo.

I m owner of Harrier 2.0 and x70, in term of comfort, performance,, features,, x70 won in all aspect with just half of price.
If you are choosing between Harrier and x70, I highly recommend x70.

Power wise, non can beat the CX5 diesel. That is just damn powerful (of course diesel has more torque haha).
But spec wise, the X70 is amazing. Those nappa leather seats are so comfortable and whats funny is that not even a 370k Merc has that LOL.

I'm a x70 CBU user for 1year and my car did 20k of mileage, these are the problems arises
1. The steering always steer to the left from , what proton did was an alignment everytime I raise this issue, the problem still there.
2. My car gear change when I flaw the throttle very harsh and scary, this happens the 4th month when I brought the car for a long drive to Cameron.
3. 2nd hard gear change is from way down from genting it just drop very harshly from 6th to 4th suddenly then it ran smoothly.
4. 3rd hard gear change when it was on Adaptive Cruise Control from malacca when a car comes in front it suddenly dropped very harshly.
5. My car always wobbles/vibrate when the speed 50kmh -80kmh after that speed it rides smoothy.
6. My car always wobbles/vibrate when climb uphill 70kmh- 100kmh. This is even happens either I drive the car or its on Adaptive Cruise Control.
7. Already two time I address this issue to proton, proton said there is software update for CBU models which is latest software is 005 and my model was running on 000 software update. Proton didn't even notify us until my 3rd service, only when the problem arise they update the software.
8. Proton said they need to open my gearbox to check why it wobbles/vibrate. How sure this will be solved, my car is just 1 year old and I'm not confident with what they going to do. I just don't want another new problem arise from this issue.
9. I'm just not happy on how proton is handling this issue, is this how they solve issue, everytime I need to send the car for the whole day and they problem still there. 10.This is really not helpful, my time and my money to send the car and had to take grab to work.
11. Even my friends warn me to not buy x70 when it launch, I bought it on the confident that they might have improved and I would like to support proton.
12. To all x70 CBU owners kindly go to service center and update your TCU software.
13. Very seldom I use this car and it gives this kind of problems, my daily drive myvi is even better and I had no issues even though it has done 160k km.
14. I was even thinking of buying x50, after all this matter with x70 I have no confidence with next proton cars.
15. Hopefully TH-cam reviewers can help me on this matter to add in your reviews because before buying anything we always trust your reviews before buying new cars.

If im on the market for an SUV under 200k, I think the X70 would be my pick of the bunch as well. The CRV looks too weird for me, the XV is just a jacked up hatch, the CX5 looks better n is nicer to drive im sure, but is 20k more expensive, the xtrail is pretty much dated nowadays, the HRV CX3 and CHR r too expensive for what they r which r just B segment SUVs. So X70 for me as well.
My own opinion.. X70 looks the freshest.. OMG..well done PROTON

Anda patut memberikan penerangan tentang kegunaan SUV di jalanraya biasa, di lebuhraya dan di jalan tanpa tar atau off road.

Semua gadget2 yg di bicarakan seharusnya sebagai tambah nilai kepada sifat2 utama di dlm kenderaan SUV, dan bukan satu kemestian.

Zaman dah berubah. Buat masa sekarang, SUV tidak lagi dipandu seperti yang saudara bayangkan. Majoriti besar kenderaan seperti ini dibeli dan digunakan untuk menggantikan model-model sedan, dan kebanyakannya tak pernah dipandu pada jalan off-road pun. Malah, model Proton dan Honda (kedua-duanya 2WD) dalam uji pandu ini juga tidak direka untuk dipandu pada permukaan yang lasak.
Jadi, kami rasa ia adalah lebih sesuai untuk menguji dan menilai kereta-kereta ini seperti yang akan digunakan oleh bakal-bakal pemilik - sebagai kereta harian, dan bukan SUV off-road.
The clincher for my money is the one with the quietest ride, the best sound system, and the best ride at high speed on the Malaysian Highway. For that Proton comes out the best of the 3 makes. Value for money comes a near second place, but it is nevertheless a bonus that Proton is by far the best value for money out of the 3 choices by far. Use the money saved for your house items? Why not?

Geely's joint venture with Proton is a smart move. it means it's tendency to share technology with malaysia instead of a independent foreign car brand. but after all, this one is engineered by Volvo team, at low cost.
Proton almost planned to enter the American market in November 1988, but they failed to meet strict regulations.
Everything seems nice about the X70 except the exterior looks. It's like a box and a monster meshed together. I'll pick the XV anytime for its smooth engine and great looks. However, I totally agreed that the infotainment LCD is horrible.

From my opinion I think the Vw Tiguan with smaller engine which is only 1.4 turbocharged is more powerful and more fun to drive

first of all, lets agree that CRV is undisputed rockstar of the SUV c-segment. Been there, done that. The name alone had enough pulling power compare to others esp in Malaysia. Having said that, X70 is a very good options (full 40k cheaper for the top variant). Should've put CRV as the benchmark and having CX5/Tiguan for direct segmental comparison and HRV/CX3 for price. CRV still the best in direct comparisons, but boy do X70 give a good shout out for potential buyer.

Yes there will be a ckd model. Maybe in october. Just waiting for the tg malim plant to be finish. 1 more things, if im not mistaken, there wouldn't be a 1.5tgdi. Only 1.8tgdi. And the price would be differ around 10% at max.

Do not cheat ourselves that X70 is cheap Volvo. There is differentiation. I always hear people say now Volvo is china car (they are not afford to own volvo) and Proton X70 is Volvo technology (when they buy Geely and hope that it is Volvo).
LOL X70 is totally unrelated to any Volvo tech. The chassis and platform is unrelated to Volvo's models and is instead used only for Geely's domestic midsized vehicles. The initial 1.8TGDi plus 6-speed auto powertrain is also unrelated to Volvo. The X50 on the other hand can legitimately be considered a "budget XC40" because it shares the platform and powertrain with the XC40.

Probably a good thing. Newer model/revision will iron out issues with first batch, perhaps will also have Proton's input in the ride and handling department.

CRV - biggest, priciest, clunkiest, unstable at high speed, loudest. Pretty much everything i would avoid in buying a car for everyday use in Malaysia 😂

You forgot to mention abt the broken gear knob lmao
The quality is quite horrendous honestly which is quite a pity. When I rode in one I absolutely hated how the soundproofing was so horrible, close to non-existent. But the Honda Sensing is pretty good stuff, the 1.5T is quite punchy and the interior is very roomy and comfortable.
