    Hey viewers! It IS true, Rick really does give away the DVD sets. I was fortunate to be a winner, so go ahead and qualify to enter, .. only us viewers of the channel get to enter, so the odds are pretty good👍. Season 4 would have been wonderful. The network had told Sherwood that the show was on for season 4, before a month later, the nix came thanks to the executive wife. Sherwood said that 3 of the cast members had purchased new homes based on the network's initial intent to renew. He did not say which ones, but I would guess was not Tina Louise, not Jim
    Bacus, and not Natalie Schafer. Tina wanted to leave anyway, and both Jim and Natalie were well established.. An episode with Paul Lynde would have been simply nuts! Of all the prospective episodes, one with Paul Lynde is the one I would have most loved to see.

      Outside of __'Bewitched'_ and _'Hollywood Squares'_ the performance of his that springs to mind is an episode _'Love, American Style'_ .....although, that may have to with his co-star, Carol Wayne.

    A silly alien visits the island. 20 years later Alf did visit the castaways.
    Glad the Ginger swap didn't happen. It would have changed the perfect dynamic that is Gilligan's Island.
    The second TV was based off of the castaways turning the island into a resort.

    Great piece on Gilligan's Island! In episode #2 Bye Bye Birdy (Where Ginger leaves the island) here's what happened: A small boat washes up on shore and it is intact! But only one can leave as the boat is very small. Each of the Castaways squabble for why each of them should be the one to go for rescue - except for Gilligan. He's too shy to push his own name! Finally, the Castaways agree to have a vote and of course - everyone votes for themselves! Everyone except for Gilligan; he was too bashful. But Ginger had promised him a part in her next movie if she were the one to go and so Gilligan voted for her and Ginger gets to go! Of course, everyone else is mad at Gilligan as usual. But the Professor is worried Ginger will get Sun poisoning and so he tasks Gilligan with making Ginger some sun screen lotion. Ginger leaves the island, but after she puts the lotion on it turns out to be super-slippery palm oil. When she later stands up to wave at the ship now steaming for her rescue she slips back and bonks her head. Now she does get rescued, but she has amnesia and can't tell anyone where she came from or who was with her. Gilligan has done it again! Back on the island the castaways listen to all this in a news report over the Professor's radio and realize they won't be rescued after all. It ends with everyone shouting, "Gilligan!"

    I'm not so sure of "Ginger" leaving the show and replacing her with two other girls would've worked. There's already a large cast already. It just sounds like a bad idea to me.

    • @johnruschmeyer5769
      @johnruschmeyer5769 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      On the other hand, this would have evened out the sexes at 4 persons each, so potentially less (or more) viewer speculation about possible couplings. From a plot standpoint, I'm wondering what reason would have been given for Ginger not pointing rescuers to the rest of the castaways. Usually, the guest stars either don't tell for personal (selfish) reasons or Gilligan somehow negates the pointer to the island. Would Ginger want off the island badly enough to steal the boat and screw everyone else? Also, it seems like it might have been time for a new opening theme.

    • @donnicholas7552
      @donnicholas7552 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@johnruschmeyer5769 True. But knowing the plot devices used on the show, Ginger could get amnesia and forget what happened to the other castaways? It could also be that she regains her memory and everybody gets rescued and there's closure when the series ends. So, yeah that could work.

      I was greatly disappointed that Tina Louise grew tired with Gilligan's, as did Charlotte Rae, with The Facts Of Life. They both wanted to move on & make more of their careers, but neither got anywhere. Thankfully for Tina, that fourth season never happened. As far as Charlotte, her replacement, Cloris Leachman kind of buried Mrs Garrett, as she was more famous. Happy Ginger is still around.

      "It's About Time" was also Sherwood Schwartz (with an equally memorable theme song; say 'it's about time!' to a babyboomer and you may well cause them to sing the first few lines, 60 years later). It was not ever very popular, though, even with the major format change midway through its run. It must have looked great on paper (Joe E. Ross and Imogene Coca as funny cavepeople, with attractive male and female teen children), but man it was awful in the execution.

    This is GREAT, Rick! I was fortunate to work with Sherwood toward the end of his life. He seemed to like to recycle ideas he thought were good, and at one point had GILLIGAN'S ISLAND, THE MUSICAL, off Broadway. A lot of time has passed, but I do remember attending 2 of his plays. The first, I only remember Sandra Gould sat in front of me and I was so happy to meet her. The second I attended at a college, or high school auditorium. Lovely to be invited to this practice run and I do believe that show became what was performed in NYC. The premise was about an alien with the Castaways, so possibly the alien idea was later worked in to that script. Also, I vaguely remember a TV movie combining Gilligan with The Globe Trotters. I do believe they had built a hotel on the island for that show. Love your work! Disney animator, Dave Woodman

I'm not a big fan of Bewitched but the episodes where he plays Uncle Aurther were standouts. I also love the concept of a Hotel for guest stars washed up on shore. That concept even had spin off potential.

  • @marksadams01
    @marksadams01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I also like "Who's the Dodo?" I'd arrange the script and costumes where the genie's turban is decorated with dodo feathers, some fall off, and the Professor keeps finding them. Gilligan keeps the genie a secret, and has many close calls with the Professor almost discovering the genie. Through all the hubbub, Gilligan, of course, makes three stupid, accidential wishes ("I wish I didn't say that..."), and as the genie and the lamp disappear (with the tide, maybe), the Professor's collection of Dodo feathers fade away, too, with Gilligan and the Professor never seeing the connection between the two storylines.

  • @Orrymain1
    @Orrymain1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    That was interesting. Of course, from the time those 'ideas' were written down to the time the script is written to the time of filming, the whole scenario could be drastically different. By S4, it would be harder in my mind to keep having people pop up on the island and then get off without helping the castaways. They can't all get lost on the way home, too. Alien could just be a foreigner and not an outer world character. I know Tina had issues with the show, but it's very hard to envision Ginger getting into a kayak on her own and just leaving, or for a kayak to be found and they vote for one to use it and vote for Ginger, who would be the least qualified to try to get away safely, second perhaps to Mrs. Howell.

      They're bullet points. You can't base the quality on rough concepts. I think the writing was solid for the most part. They would have made them work or put them aside in favor of other ideas. The other thing is that the cast was so strong that they could have made even a bad script passable. Just look at "It's About Time". Same staff more or less but the cast was so week that they couldn't pull it off. The show was not very good.

    • @LANESxNOWONLYx

      Yes, Gilligan's Island was grounded in reality, especially to me as a child when starting to watch the show. Sure some of the episodes were a bit farfetched & bordered on fantasy. It was the characterizations that made such a wonderful fantasy seem so real! Wisely enough, the Writers employed dream sequences to deal with storylines exceeding the realm of reality, & it was effective. Even my childhood mind could differentiate those elements of the show. The miniaturized Gilligan idea would have been much better achieved as part of a dream sequence to allow the show continuity in grounded reality.

    • @gabevee3
      @gabevee3 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh COME NOW! So invisible Gilligan is grounded? Or each of them gaining special abilities from irradiated seeds grounded? Or mind reading nuts... grounded? The whole latter series was all farcical fantasy... like the mad scientist transferring personalities. Grounded in reality??? Did you ever even watch the show? There are sooo many other scenarios that did air that were whacky like a miniature Gilligan, which would have been par for the course, actually. Sorry for sounding so hard, but imagining that a miniature Gilligan would have been jumping the shark to me hasn't watched the show. Don't get me wrong... I love Gilligan's island. It was farce, and that's what I love about it. But the undone episodes would be just as farcical and fun and in keeping with the rest.

      I’m thinking you must have missed the qualifying adverb “basically” in the statement. And yes, there were exceptions but the majority of episodes were grounded in reality.
      So, “basically grounded” is an accurate description.

    The Alf episode where he dreams he's on Gilligan's Island is a gift from God. The Skipper, Gilligan, The Professor and Mary-Ann are excellent, and seem like time stood still for them on the island. Since the Skipper put Alf to work, it's not quite what he expects.
    One of the best episodes of Alf.

It’s a shame none of these came to be due to the show being cancelled and I remember you going into more details why it got cancelled and I still think it’s dumb, but I guess there are shows do get cancelled for dumb reasons. I think if these episodes were made and if viewership increased, who knows, maybe then Gilligan’s Island could have gone on for another season or two after a fourth season. Thanks for the video Rick, keep up the great work!

      Networks get strange ideas in their heads all the time. Look at the Rural Purge, for instance. Many shows cancelled in that were still really popular in the ratings, yet all were scrapped. Now, they’re all looking for the next cop show, the next doctor drama, the next law practice. The idea of any kind of fantasy scripted show is almost impossible now, other than the tried and true like another reboot of Star Trek.

    The "motel" idea of guests staying there actually happened in the movie "The Castaways At Gilligan's Island", where the castaways are rescued again, and Mr Howell then proposes the idea to turn the island into a holiday resort, with the other castaways as silent partners, where guests would come and stay and live like the castaways did for a week.
    The movie had special guests like Tom Bosley.
    They also did "The Harlem Globetrotters On Gilligan's Island" where it was set in the Castaways, which is the name of the new resort that the castaways had set up.
    I read that these movies were to set up a "Gilligan's Island" revival series, which would be like the previous seasons, but now set on their resort holiday island, and their misadventures with the guests.

      I didn't care for the second and third GI movies; in fact, I would've rewritten the first movie altogether. The movies were not as funny as the TV series was, and much of the charm was gone. The first movie I would had them being rescued but foregoing the parade and Gilligan and the Skipper visiting the others after their rescue so they can get the other castaways to sign off on an insurance policy saying they were not at fault (which had already been decided in the TV series), but finding they too had problems.
      I mean, would Mary Ann's boyfriend have waited 15 years for her to reappear after being presumably lost at sea? C'mon! After that long, all of the castaways would've been presumed to be dead. And what did Mary Ann do after her best friend and their mutual boyfriend got married? Did she go stay with the Skipper and Gilligan?I did like the visit to the Howells in that movie, as well as Judith Baldwin's line as Ginger, "He tied me up and saved my life!" That line should've been given to Dawn. No offense to Judith, but she just wasn't convincing as Ginger, not with her honey-dipped-too-thick voice.

    Hi, Rick. I read about the possibility of Gilligan having a pet dinosaur. If the producers had intended to make the creature a recurring character, it would have needed a unique gimmick to keep everyone on the island. I see Gilligan just after the theme song stumbling over a rock, leading him to fall into a cave where a small dinosaur hatches from an egg. Naturally, Gilligan runs away yelling in a panic (regardless of the creature's size).
    Over the course of the episode, the creature is proven to be somewhat naive in its nature. Regardless, the Professor hatches an idea (pun intended) that as the dinosaur grows, someone will be able to ride it back to civilization. However, the creature overeats towards the end of the episode, and falls into the lagoon on its back. It floats off into the ocean. The last scene shows everyone gathered around the radio, listening to the announcement of the creature arriving in civilization with an overstuffed belly. The announcer also states that scientists will be studying the creature closely as no one can understand how it came to consume so many coconuts (with no explanation as to how they know about the food). Then, the ending theme song plays.

      Nowadays it would have to have a dark origin story. They'd all be escaping unpleasant pasts that are slowly revealed throughout the course of the show. Like maybe the professor was passed over for tenure because he was having an affair with the Dean's wife. The Howell's fleeced retirees out of their life savings. Skipper and Gilligan are forever guilt ridden for causing a boating accident that resulted in someone dying. Ginger is dealing with being sexually harassed in the film business. And Mary Ann, she's just as sweet as can be. Nothing wrong with her!

    My question with Ginger leaving was how would they explain her not telling about the rest of the castaways so they would have been rescued?
    I am wondering what new CBS shows for that season got flopped & got cancelled that they shouldn't have put on in the 1st place & instead keep Gilligan's Island on.
    Of the new episodes, the Pirate one appeals to me most.
    Also, these were proposals, but even if there was a 4th season some of them might not have been made, script problems being one possible reason.

  • @petesalisbury1173
    @petesalisbury1173 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The owner of the script that had the 4th season story ideas was Robert Rankin, President of the Original Gilligan's Island Fan Club. Only he has seen that page and he only shared information from it in his fan club newsletter. Everything you shared is an exaggeration of his original information. I was the island correspondent for the newsletter and was eventually promoted to fan club president by Sherwood Schwartz. Two tidbits of information I will share with you. Vito Scotti was to play the pirate. The Ginger gets rescued storyline was a contract negotiation ploy as the cast contracts were all up for renewal for season 4 and beyond. It was suspected that Tina Louise would demand a much larger raise than producers would want to pay (a tactic her agent tried for the reunion film). By showing storylines replacing Ginger it was hoped they would be able to keep Tina in the cast and stick to the budget.

    The episiode where Gilligan becomes Dick Tracy sounds like it might be a dream sequence, much like the episode where he sees himself as a James Bond-type secret agent. The rest of the castaways would round out the cast of his dream: Skipper as the police chief, MaryAnn as Tess Truehart, Mr. Howell as the villain (Moneybags, maybe?). Rick, your best video to date! Really loved it cuz I'm a great fan of Gilligan's Island. I think the most interesting, and the hardest, of the episodes would have been rescuing Ginger. It sounds plausible that she wanted off since she was really unhappy that the premise of the show didn't center around her. I understand they probably didn't tell her the whole truth about the concept of the show when she signed on. But that episode would be the hardest. Like another commenter said, how would she be explained as having been rescued and not told her rescuers about the others. They're all supposed to be great friends on the island. On all the other episodes where someone came on the island and went off it could be explained easily by their character why they didn't tell anybody. Zsa Zsa played the typical dizzy blond, the surfer bumped his head losing his memory, Harold Hecuba wanted to steal the musical presentation of Hamlet that The Castaways had devised, etc. But even if Ginger couldn't remember or didn't want to tell, the fact that the actress that was lost at sea with 6 others years earlier suddenly showing up in obvious good health should trigger something that would be hard to discount in this kind of episode. It would have been interesting to see how they worked around it. Again great job, keep up the good work! You really raised the bar with this one!

Of the 10 episodes that we're never filmed, I like the concept of By By Birdy. That would have added a new feel for the show and would have been cool to see how that episode and the following episodes would have played out without Ginger. I just wanted to say that 2 episodes from the series were my favorites: the episode when they went to another place where the mad scientist lived. The scientist switched personalities between the cast. Hysterical! The other was the episode where Gillian was fishing and caught the crate of radioactive vegetable seeds. Really funny! I have always read that one of the actors on Gunsmoke was related to the wife of the CBS executive.

    The Alien? Leonard Nimoy crashlands in the Galileo shuttle and becomes so frustrated with Gilligan that he uses the Vulcan Death Grip on him then fixes the shuttle and leaves. Gilligan then wakes up to see the shuttle fly off

    Tie between Paul Lynde and the Alien episode. Paul makes everything better but an Alien GI episode really stands out because Id love to see a Mork-like or Alf-like character on the Island!

    I guess I will have too be the one, when it comes to gunsmoke or Gilligans island there is no contest. I loved Gilligans island but gunsmoke is the most iconic western of all time. Gunsmoke ran for 20 years plus several gunsmoke movies, there simply no comparison!

    What am I doing anyway? I'm trying to get you to remember the first season black and white Gilligan's Island episode where the castaways had put Willie Gilligan/Bob Denver up to being the next American president. Since Bob Denver has earned a master/bachelor degree in political science. The 8th castaway: Teresa Dortch never brought Willie Gilligan over to Washington DC for this reason. Maryanne Somers/Dawn Wells was different. The castaways had put her up to performing for a talent show in 3 separate 2nd or 3rd season episodes. One of them was when Maryanne had a hard time being herself. She was definitely Ginger Grant/Tina Louise. Also, there was a 2nd season episode where she tried out as a Miss Castaway pageant. Gladys, the gorilla had a strong sense of fairness. Plus, the episode called Don't Bug the Mosquitoes really won the hearts of the Gilligan's Island fans. It's all about the fictitious female teen rock group called the Honeybees. These 3 Gilligan's Island episodes reveal that Dawn Wells was crowned as the 1959 Miss Nevada pageant. 🪨 🎸 🤘 🥌 👩‍🎤 🗿 👨‍🎤 ➕️ 🫚 ⏲️ ⏳️ 🕐 🕙 🕚 🕑 ⏲️ 🎭 🤧 🤧 😂 🤣 😳 😭 🎭

    Very interesting! I really enjoyed this as I often wondered what another season would have been like had it not been canceled. I remember reading that the wife of the studio head wanted her beloved Gunsmoke to continue and Gilligan's Island got the ax instead. That whole premise of Ginger being rescued alone is absurd and would never have worked. Replacing Ginger with two additional actresses would have changed everything we loved about Gilligan's Island and the SEVEN castaways. Originally they should have cast either Julie Newmar or Sharon Tate OR had either one be the replacement. They would have been perfect-- In my opinion anyway. Good Job Rick!
