We'll show you how to be nice when playing Catan. Don't worry, it'll help you win too. Being nice is actually a good strategy after all.

How about the classic: I trade you for some wheat, then you play a monopoly card to get all the wheat from everyone.

The best solution there is to just kindly quit. Give them no satisfaction in their hollow victory.

Keep up the good work! You have a great personality! I know your subscribers are low, but stay persistent, you’ll get there. The catan videos had great content. Thx! I am now excited that my children and wife might like me a little less when I win. However, I will show good manners! I’ll just laugh at them on the inside.😂

When playing with couples, get ready to have the robber on your stuff...

I agree that setting up unbalanced trade for the sake of spiting another player is unfair and against the concept of a competition (that one is here to win and so one will make moves to advance ones position and not others). Blocking and stealing though is fairplay and excpected: Catan is not a game of diplomacy, but of placement and ressource management, so being nice is of very low value compared to positional advantage and ressource denial obtained by aggressive blocking and thieving. Moreover the lenght of the game doesn't exactly allow to capitalize on goodwill: you are allready fighting an uphill battle if you give your opponent some leeway and they can leverage it into an advantage.

It really depends on who you're playing with. I've played plenty of games where I pissed off the wrong person and lost as everyone teamed up on me because I blocked and stole in fairness. The expectation at the table was more about "being nice" that abiding by rules that are permitted. If everyone at the table feels that blocking and stealing is not offensive (honestly as everyone really should) then you're definitely right.

@@hardyhousegames I can't dismiss the metagame aspect of the players themselves indeed.
I still see a difference though: one is a case of fair play and personnal attitude which leads to the question of "does the griefing player belong in this group?" because if a player is disruptive then the group shouldn't have to put up with it, whereas the other is a case of what the players feels confortable with in a game which leads more to the question of "is this game adapted for this group?", because if they are incomfortable with what is arguably a core balancing element of the game then there is probably another game that would suit their taste better.
With that said if a group enjoy playing this way there is nothing wrong with it: a game is played to be fun after all. To me we are not playing the same game though.

I play mostly online (pandemics be like that) and the worst manners I see are in the chat. Table talk is one thing, name calling and profanity are another. I'm pretty quick to mute and/or block.
And what's with calling people "noob"? This game is over 20 years old! You think you're on the cutting edge of gaming?
