It's funny that you made this video. I just watched a video a couple of days ago about the Japanese Blacksmith that makes those scissors. There a couple of videos about him. It's very fascinating.
I did a little browsing on google and apparently those bursts in the spark test is CO and CO2 (being produced from the carbon in the steel and the oxygen in the air) bursting out of an iron oxide layer that forms on the surface of the superheated steel particle that is abraded off the bulk piece of steel. They're like little tiny rust fireworks. Neat.
Its getting weirder and weirder. Next episode is gonna be something like making an ornate gem inlayed steerng wheel. Edit: Now that I say it, that actually sounds kinda cool.
Would haver to be for an earlier car though, pre airbags. That's just way too complicated. And I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want a metal casing blowing open in your face in a crash.
There is a picture floating around of a steering wheel with the center decorated with little stones, just to bring the "positive energy". One of the comments underneath it was something about turning that airbag into a claymore.
Was going to ask for a damascus bonsai set. For a challenge you want to make a knob cutter and wire cutter! (A bit like farrier clippers, but tiny) Fun fact, bonsai scissors are just the ordinary style of scissors found in Japan.
