OMG, I love you even more. I've been looking all over for 94 era clips of Closer. Amazing how few of them seem to be circulating. That sounds kick ass. Thanks.
The older ones had much more synthesizers and backing tracks. Pretty much everyone on stage plays keyboard on this song except Chris Vrenna (making for a total of 4 keyboard players on this version) plus the backing tracks. The newer version has only 1 keyboard player. A ton of synth parts were changed to guitars and bass, and plus the new breakdown which cuts out the whole middle section. That's why it sounds so different.
Thanks for this, I've been looking for a 1994 live version of closer other than the woodstock performance on youtube. Can't really hear the kick ass guitar line at the end too well unfortunately though
I think you feel that way if you've never seen Vrenna play NIN. Anyone who has ever seen that thinks he's the best. No disrespect to Freese or Dillon, they're both still great drummers who gave us great music.
in my opinion, aaron north's guitar replacing the synth sounded sooooo much better. but you can never truly get over how cool it sounds either way. doodoodoodoodoodoo doodoodoodoodoodoo
I think Some songs suck live with the new line up mostly Somewhat Damaged & Mr. Self Destruct off the top of my head compared to previous line-ups... and then some songs are fucking amazing live recently Like any With-Teeth Tracks or tracks like Heresy, Deep, Ruiner... IMO... I never leave a NIN show Dissapointed however... and I've been lucky to catch some GREAT setlists...

Self-Destruct Tour = best tour ever! Trent Reznor + Chris Vrenna + Robin Finck + James Woolley or Charlie Clouser = Best Band Ever.

Sin was "BAD-ASS" during Fragility... But Terrible Lie with the new line is Awesome...
