This had the best of everything in WoW. Vash'jir was freaking beautiful, had the best soundtrack, and there was nothing wrong with the combat. I don't know why everyone says there is. Vash'jir will always be the best zone to me.
DeVon Mohn Underwater content is generally hated in the WoW community. You might remember how often you had to swim around in old Vanilla content. When Cata hit, most underwater quests were either scrapped or made insanely easy.
The Leitmotiv of this piece is genius; ominous, vast, secretive, distant (deeps), yet beatiful and promising to discover for those eager to know, invites you to explore beyond limits, but no promise you ever can (or want to) back. Sorry my bad english, i hope you get the picture.
Absolutely love this track and this map. It gives new life and mystery to Azeroth. I was playing in a private server and I did all the quests, got the achievement. I never played retail during Cata but it seemed good.
Kalahatze Slash I enjoyed the music, thought it was a fitting piece for the experience, and haven't actually played WoW since shortly after Cataclysm launched?
lol same. I remember that some time after Cata launched and i finished Vashjr i went to the sea for holidays and was diving near coral reefs it reminisced me this music and overall feeling of the zone so much. It still kind of does when i have oportunity to go diving. That just shows how great job they did. Vashjr is one of the best zones ( if not best).
Something about Vashj'ir always has me sitting at the edge of my chair, breathing heavily, not really eating at all, reading all the quest texts and giving me that feeling, that horrible feeling that makes me lonely when i'm surrounded by people, makes me feel like it's midnight at noon, and makes me ignore my hunger and carry on.
One of the best zones in WoW IMO, it's such a shame that a lot of it got scrapped and unresolved. Who is the Battle Maiden and where did she go? What happened to Ozumat? What happened to the island that was so crucial for the Horde/Alliance to capture? What's the deal with the dragon skeletons in the abyssal depths? What about the obvious presence of N'Zoth and why was it so important for them to take control of Nespirah and the other shellfish thing whose name I can't remember? So many unanswered questions...
Yeah, also, the fact that the Abyssal Maw raid was scrapped also sucked. There was never any sort of conclusion to the Throne of the Tides. Ozumat just grabs Neptulon and swims into the distance. That's it. Even thought it got scrapped, I wish Patch 4.1 could have been Abyssal Maw. I actually liked questing through Vash'jr too.
The gameplay in that Zone was awful! So awful in fact, that they scrapped abyssal maw just for this very reason. 4.1 was supposed to be the "fire and water patch" but, as someone stated at blizzcon, they just couldn't make the raid enjoyable with the 3D combat in Vash'jir. So it got scrapped.
Vashj'ir had great quests and a truly epic storyline testament to how difficult it was to bring an underwater to fruition. Although I'm not much a fan of vehicle-based quests (which admittedly Vashj'ir did have), I enjoyed it thoroughly nonetheless. My only regret is that they didn't pan out the Abyssal Maw with a raid, more dungeons, and more lore. It felt unfinished. I also thought the way they implemented Neptulon was a significant letdown, with him simply making a small cameo. In order to stimulate the prestige of dungeons and raids, zone quests should introduce the prospect of reaching the story's climax through instances. Vashj'ir could have easily done this for the Abyssal Maw considering how fantastic its quests were.
Joshua Tunis That's because it is unfinished, Not Vashj'ir itself but the lore, Vashj'ir was basically a view into what is to come, with N'Zoth the cause of the Naga and us yet defeating him we are going to see a whole lot more, I mean even legion is starting to look like it will teeter towards the naga once more, thus bringing us closer to N'zoth and the underwater lores that follow.
I'll never forget the first time I came here while playing my shaman on launch day. The way the kraken thing showed up and threw us into the sea was pretty cool, and the most memorable part about that initial experience was watching my unconscious shaman sink down to the dark depts of the ocean to his doom before being rescued. The tone of the whole zone was set right there for me. This was by far Cata's best zone (imo). I hope that one day we can finish this naga storyline completely and finally confront Azshara.
still hope they come up with some more amazing underwater zones. The soundtrack gives me chills, because it really gives you a feeling of the open and wide sea and all the mystery hidden in it. I dont know why so many people choose hijal over vashjr over and over again, hijal is basically just another 0815 zone and this is something special. I had absolutely no problem with moving aroung or targeting and i think people who do even fail at playing pong.
Hyjal has a lot going for it. As of now, it is a great zone lore-wise and back in Cata in the firelands patch, you needed Hyjal quests to do the firelands dailies...So there was that, too. ...But I'm a little odd in that regard. I just do Vashj'ir everytime one of my characters has the eligible level to go there. Something about the music, something about the atmosphere and holy crap - something about the really creative art design in general just amazes me. And then - the creative (and fun) quests. Remember the eel-killing quest w/o context? I laughed for a good 5 minutes at that stupidity and I loved every second of this zone in general. Such a great place. Underwater overall is WAY too underrated - it can be so beautiful!
I never bothered with this zone until years after it came out. It was such a suprise. The quests and this music felt like an old school james bond film.
This zone is hated on quite a bit by some of my friends and seemingly most folks on the forums, I for one absolutely loved it--and the music is probably a good 90% of the reason why I loved this area of the game. Very atmospheric, and immersive. Even moreso than Northrend--which had too much boring music.
I'm still mad they never finished the story to this zone. - What of Ozumot? - What of the Naga Battle Maiden? - What of Neptulon? - What of the island the Horde and Alliance were fighting over?
They were going to finish it but people hated this place so much that they scrapped it.. Yeah, it's upsetting. I actually loved leveling here because there were so many quests it was easy to go from 80-83.
I did at first, but then you have to consider that the island is said to be brand new and Tol Barad, while it was a new zone in WoW, is not a new island in WoW lore, it's been there for quite a long time. Remember that there is a landmass in the middle of Vashj'ir, though really, all it is is just a mountainous peak next to a thin sand bar with just two flight masters and a bunch of wrecked siege equipment. Assumably, this little piece of crap that serves no purpose beyond being one of Vashj'ir's only flight paths with Gryphons/Wyverns IS that island they were fighting over. We already know that not everything went according to plan in the final production of Cataclysm, and that a lot of ideas ended up being scrapped. My guess is that they were toying with expanding Gilneas and turning this tiny island into a PvP zone, but they never went through with either idea, so they took parts of both scrapped ideas and combined them into Tol Barad.
***** In fairness, MoP didn't 'stop' Vashj'ir's completion. Vashj'ir was a procrastinated project that never got finished because it was going to be wrapped up in a raid in 4.1 along with the Firelands. But neither project was nearly ready by 4.1, so they were put off to 4.2. Then they realized that the "fire half" of 4.2 was looking WAY better than the "water half" so they just made it all about the Firelands. The "water raid" looked like crap and was far from completion (it is comparable to Tol Barad's raid - only 3 bosses with no new artwork), which justifies this cancellation, I think. However, the fact that they never did anything with it before 4.3 is what we should be mad about. The raid itself probably would've been garbage, but it's a real shame that the questing zones and their stories never received an ending. TL;DR: Vashj'ir was doomed well before 5.0, so we can't really blame the Pandaren for this one. We *should* be mad that Vashj'ir didn't get any battle pets though.
I feel like people completely ignored this zone because it was slightly inconvenient to be underwater the whole time. Such a shame. This music, and in fact the entire zone and storyline, were incredibly ominous. You felt like you were in danger the whole time. Then you saw a whale shark drift by and realized that hey, you really were.
One of my most favored zones of all time. Greatly enjoyed the ambience, the mystique, myriad of colors, and the chills I'd get running down my spine when diving deeper, and deeper, and deeper.
from the depths I came. We shall swim out to that brooding reef in the sea and dive down through black abysses to Cyclopean and many-columned Y’ha-nthlei, and in that lair of the Deep Ones we shall dwell amidst wonder and glory for ever.
Vash'jr, the memories of the release, so many people trying to do quests at one time. It took me a total week to get to 82 because there was so many people who were just there. Definitely a zone i will not ever forget. Best leveling zone for me so far. :D
The beginning though. It gives you the feeling that "Holy shit I'm in open fucking water with whale sharks." The music is even creepier when you imagine yourself stranded in the middle of the ocean at night in a storm, in real life.
I didn't know what to expect with Vashj'ir, I thought that like all of Azeroth's ocean scenes it would just be a blank ocean floor with the occasional rock or herb to break the monotony. But I have never been so wrong. I loved the immense amount of places to explore, the vivid scenery, the unique creatures and lore, but I freakin' died for the music.
For all of their flaws in game design and writing (especially in Cataclysm), Blizzard has a knack for creating an atmosphere. This is just one of several zones where the music is as much part of the landscape as the art assets, making you FEEL the depths of the cold waters, their mysteries and wonder with its exotic, playful quality. I've only ever had to stop and experience 2 zones in my time playing the game - Grizzly Hills and Vash'jir. Those who don't bother with this place are missing out.
This music came up once when I was doing one of my random research projects - this one on the oceans of the Earth - and I found it fitting as I ended up on the page for the Challenger Deep, lol...
How could anyone hate this zone..I just got done questing through it and even though it was a slow start, it gets HELLA good. The zone is Beautiful, the music is amazing, and the lore would have been amazing also if people would have stopped complaing and bitching on how it's underwater. Suck it up and deal with it man. To Bad blizzard payed attention to the crybabies and scrapped a lot of lore essential of vash'jir.
I love this. I totally get the image in my head of a small submersible slowly dropping into the depths while dangerous creatures drift around menacingly. Perfect for an underwater zone.
I loved that zone, being able to swin over stuff, that cool mount you got. When I got back on land I was disburbed for a while not being able to go every direction in the air !
My favourite Zone in WoW. Has my favourite theme (underwater), music is amazing, Neptulon is my fav Elemental lord and water is my favourite element. Also come on Blizz, playable Naga please.
In my opinion, the only zone that Cataclysm did truly well. Every other zone was either predictable in the WoW sense or had an uninspiring story line. While this one did seem less relevant in the scope of things, I agree with Pepitobenito that both the story and zone itself were quite ominous. If I were to resub, this would go on my list of zones to replay.
This zone was my first cata leveling zone. I left my char at the quest npc to go to vashj'ir because I love the sea. I loved this Zone and the music is well written and when I listen to it I picture myself swimming to Atlantis to see what it hides in is mysteries
All of my friends and guildmates leveled up in Hyjal and they invited me too. I prefered Vashj'ir because it looked scary. I do really liked that experience, especially when I went to Abbysal Dephts..
this zone...and this music...is what made me fall in love with cataclysm when it first came out...i just love detail blizzard put in this zone....if theres anyone out there who hasnt done the quests in this zone....i highly recommend that you do
I happen to be a huge fan of Storm Peaks in WOTLK. ...And all the WOTLK zones, like Icecrown, Borean Tundra, Scholazar basin, Grizzly Hills, Dragonblight, and Wintergrasp. I liked all the new Cataclysm zones too, like Uldum, Tol Borad, Deepholme, Vash'jir, and Twilight Highlands.
Ahh such nice music. Leveling up through this zone was one of the more memorable times in cata, i ended up falling behind my guildies in the race to level 85 just because i wanted to finish all the quests in the zone. I was incredibly dissapointed that most people consider it a flop and it was not expanded upon in underwater raids and possibly more underwater zones.
hated it awell, then I started farming the poseidon mount, learned to love the amazing art and that deep ocean feeling that they actually achived. Vash'jir was really well done.
I've been playing the beta for weeks now, I really love this track. It is very fitting while you're exploring the underwater areas. It's a great zone too. If you're apprehensive about leveling "underwater", don't be. It's got some interesting quests, cool design, and should be experienced at least once.
Some parts of this zone's music remind me of a film we watched in elementary school called Voyage of the Mimi. It featured a young Ben Affleck going on a research expedition to learn about whales, and their boat ends up getting caught in a storm & stranded on an island.
Doing this zone as a Druid is so awesome. I haven't used my retarded sea lion form so much in years. Little fella looked so happy "UNDERWATER ZONE! UNDERWATER ZONE! I AM FINALLY RELEVANT! YAAAAY!"
I stopped playing WoW a few months after Cataclysm came out, but this music has stuck with me since I played the beta. I love this track so much. In fact, I loved everything they did with the world in Cata, the new zones were incredible (especially Vashj'ir and Uldum) and the changes to old ones were very welcome. I just hated what the heroics and endgame turned into. Even though I don't play anymore, I have so many great (and some bad) memories from my 5 years with the game.
Was so happy they put this level in WoW. Such a beautiful and verdant color scheme. And the only other real time you had underwater quests was back in STV during the vanilla days off the coast of Grom'Gol. Loved that back then too ^_^
You`re right, everyone hated it, due to the backtracking, but i liked it and the one thing that amazed me most about it, is how Rareware connected all worlds through several pathways and made that a puzzle mechanic. It really felt like exploring isle o`hags as a whole.
It reminds me Atlantis. The story Nagas and Atlantis are quite similar, once dominated the world but all sank into sea, their people are all changed their appearance, only difference is naga was cursed but people of Atlantis evolved during long time underwater life.
I *loved* this zone - it was gorgeous on many levels. It was so well done that my poor husband, who hates deep water, refused to quest there any longer than he had to. I loved to leather farm the turtles out there. :)
I have heard the peacful song of Hyjal... I have listened to the calming song of Howling Fjord. I saw the beautiful sight of the grizzly hills... I have wondered into the wonders of Mulgore... I have wished to see the gloriest sight of Nagrand. I slept on the soft grass of Ashenvale... But once I crossed upon the sea... I only saw black... complete black.. It was something I never seen before... horride creatures of Vash'jr
In my opinion, this zone is the only good thing about Cataclysm. The feeling your being chased by something all the time, and having to glance behind you, and in those little sanctuary caves, feeling all safe and cosy from the horrors outside in the deeps. I liked Cataclysm at first in this zone, and had high hopes, the other zones were ok, but as soon as i hit 85, i was bored very soon and now i miss old wow terrible.
This zone is epic, questing was great =). There were completely different physics for fighting than you would normally worry about. Let's look around....Up, Down, Left, WHALE SHARK!
This song has lived rent free in my head for the last 14 years
This had the best of everything in WoW.
Yeah, but anything aquatic has always fascinated me. So I guess i am a bit biased xD
DeVon Mohn Oh, Vash'jir was beautiful! But from a gameplay perspective, I hate underwater content haha
+DeVon Mohn I asked a few of my friends - one of the main problems is motion sickness.
In WoW? Weird...
I went diving a month ago and this music instinctively popped into my head.
That's how you know you're addicted to WoW.
Kalahatze Slash I enjoyed the music, thought it was a fitting piece for the experience, and haven't actually played WoW since shortly after Cataclysm launched?
lol same. It still kind of does when i have oportunity to go diving. That just shows how great job they did. Vashjr is one of the best zones ( if not best).
Haha exactly my thoughts. Will be diving again soon and just downloaded this to my phone. Who needs videogames if we can make our lives equally epic!
Ozumat just grabs Neptulon and swims into the distance. and most importantly, WHY AREN'T THERE ANY OTHER OVERSIZED PLAYER AND BOSS FIGHTS?? (Think Apache Chief)
Wasn’t Tol Barad the Island that Horde/Alliance needed to capture?
It was indeed.
Ahh...when i remember Nazgrim here... when he said "Thrall's Balls" xD
vashj'ir, uldum. ugh, cataclysm was amazing for its music
Vashj'ir had great quests and a truly epic storyline testament to how difficult it was to bring an underwater to fruition. Although I'm not much a fan of vehicle-based quests (which admittedly Vashj'ir did have), I enjoyed it thoroughly nonetheless. I also thought the way they implemented Neptulon was a significant letdown, with him simply making a small cameo.
Now we are getting the abyssal maw (Azshara's palace) in 8.2
I'll never forget the first time I came here while playing my shaman on launch day. The way the kraken thing showed up and threw us into the sea was pretty cool, and the most memorable part about that initial experience was watching my unconscious shaman sink down to the dark depts of the ocean to his doom before being rescued. this zone was so well done, i hope they do another under water type zone in the future
zangar sea in wod
They haven't.
Does Nazjatar count as one?
@@Healthtymento Nah.
@@Healthtymento yes

Such a great place. Underwater overall is WAY too underrated - it can be so beautiful!
This zone's music and quests made me wish for Naga player race...
Anyone else notice this music return in Legion? Cause it does.
Yes. I was excited to hear it return.
I never bothered with this zone until years after it came out. It was such a suprise. The quests and this music felt like an old school james bond film.

I loved Vashj'ir, but since when did Northrend have boring music??
When I first played Cata, I came here. I LOVED it. The rest of the zones just disappointed me.
I'm still mad they never finished the story to this zone.

Aesthetically the zone is great, one of the best in the game. The zone was let down mechanically

saame! When I first entered Vashj'ir, I thought it was beautiful, but terrifying!

one of the best music in game really loved it back then

Still waiting for this to come on spotify..... Good music to focus on work (and grind)
Least favorite zone, but some absolutely beautiful music

Also come on Blizz, playable Naga please.
a naga backstory would be too revealing. naga and the old gods are supposed to be mysterious and spooky but naga backstory would ruin that i think
Do you really believe they care about that? '-'
G Ponay they could and they couldnt. They care about lore but they dont know the lore do they care about whatever they want
Water is not an element. It’s a compound made up of 2 different types of elements: hydrogen and oxygen.
This music plays in my head whenever I think of the ocean
This is so magical.Sometimes I went to Vash'jir take a look and listening this music..And down two times Poseidus !
This track just resonates threat, as if something is watching you, constantly, from the depths, and will not hesitate to fuck you up. Great stuff.
Man... Deathwing Made An Pretty Place.
Vashj'ir is probably one of my most favorite areas in WoW. The music is beautiful, the whole area is stunning. I dunno why people complain about it.
7:50 that soundtrack was enough to drive even the bravest of adventurers insane, as they rode around on their seaponies.
this zone...and this music...is what made me fall in love with cataclysm when it first came out...i just love detail blizzard put in this zone....if theres anyone out there who hasnt done the quests in this zone....i highly recommend that you do
Just love blizzards music. They really care for you too get that special feeling when you play.
Uldum and Vash'jir are my two of my favorite zones. So much adventure and mystery, it was sooo fun exploring these areas! I loved the story too :3
This is so beautiful, it really exemplifies the vastness of the ocean and the dark unknown waiting to be explored.
I loved how Vashj'ir played with the idea of 3 dimensional combat. As a mage, it was exceptionally fun.
All of my friends hated this zone, but it is my all time favorite. World of Watercraft for life
Such a magnificent zone with amazing music. I loved every bit of it. There is something so beautiful, fascinating and scary about it.
first zone for me in cata and what an amazing piece of work it is too
I really wish Blizzard went back to this type of ambient soundtrack. They've really been abusing over the top orchestral shenanigans.
they gotta make this available on iTunes, I'd play this on my speakers all day
I've been playing the beta for weeks now, I really love this track.
YAAAAY!"
YES! I loved that area! That giant angler fish was so hard to beat!
Loved that back then too ^_^
N'zoth is down there.
This music really reminds of me Banjo-Tooie on the Nintendo 64...
+FanskapsJägar'n Totally.
+FanskapsJägar'n Such a great game, by the way.
This really reminds me of the Ulduar music for the Mimiron area. And like that one, it chills me to the bone.
3:00 - 5:35 is my fav part! It's got that underwater and Atlantis feeling doesn't it? Truly, amazing :)
i played the whole zone and with this music all the quest were just epic!
This zone was pure beauty.
I feel like I'm in the oddysey
I've always wanted to ride on a seahorse.
Thank you WoW.
Very atmospheric.. Blizzard's music never fails to impress me.
Love this song! Really great to have playing while reading 20,000 leagues under the Sea..
This zone is epic, questing was great =).
There were completely different physics for fighting than you would normally worry about.
Let's look around....Up, Down, Left, WHALE SHARK!
vashjir and uldum, for me the best zones in the entire wow right now
i'm in a trancelike state right now
@Mazed927 that was...amazing.
oh fuck
so hauntingly beautiful...
i love this place just so much fun. the music is mind blowing to.
One of the most beautiful zones in wow!!
one of my favourite areas
Wonderful music!
