Hunting for CFexpress Cards (for Fujifilm X-H2S)

  • What speed? Which brand? How many GBs is enough? Not all cards can keep up with ProRes files. That's why we need to choose carefully.
I tried to take a look at the CFExpress cards we can use in this camera (Fujifilm X-H2S).
➥ You can check Fuji's compatibility table here:

Over an hour of 4K 16:9 ProRes HQ recording time on a 512Gb CFexpress card.
Thanks for a nice video. I'm strongly considering buying an X-H2S because of its rich color shades - compared to my Sony (and Canon) cameras. I can record at least 2 hours and 30 minutes 4K ProRes HQ video on my Ninja V with 1Tb SSD, so the twenty minutes of ProRes HQ on a 512Gb CFexpress card seemed a little scary, considering the prices of CFexpress cards. I went to Fuji's site and looked at the numbers. There is a predominant probability that the 20 min. is Open Gate 6.2K 3:2 video as approx. has the size of 26 Mpix (6240 x 4160 pix). 4K 16:9, which is usually the format my customers demand, takes up approx. 8.3Mpix (3840x2160) which is less than a third of Open Gate 6.2 (26 divided by 8.3) and therefore gives over an hour of 4K 16:9 ProRes HQ recording time on a 512Gb CFexpress card which must be said to be “a little longer on the litre”
The ideal solution is of course external SSD recording via USB, let's hope Fuji allows this in the next software update.
I almost always use the Ninja V as I need a larger external monitor and better video tools, and it is so much easier to edit the ProRes files directly from the SSD drive without file transfer and intermedia file conversion, but for private use, holidays etc. it is very nice to be able to settle for a memory card.

      Thanks for your comment!
Yes 6.2k takes lots of storage but if you shoot 4k ProRes on a 512gb card:
      Prores HQ = 1h 17m 52s
      Prores 422 = 1h 56m 28s
      Prores LT = 2h 46m 37s
so it is enough in my opinion. If you have Ninja V of course you can benefit from external recording possibilities.

I must say, the whole vibe of this channel is so pleasant!
On topic, there's also the more risky route of making a CFExpress card out of an M.2 NVME SSD, using something like the Sintech adapter.

The greatest risk with buying an NVME M.2 is if you accidentally buy one with the wrong amperage and voltage. It could potentially fry your camera! So yeah, risky if you don't do your research.

1)how did you calculate the prores data rates? prores data rates are variable because of different compression based on the scene complexity.
compression ranges from 2.5-5:1 to uncompressed raw data.
    2) about the 2700mb/s prores hq data rate you mentioned, is it 6k 24/30p or 4k120p?

    • @UmutLutfican
      @UmutLutfican  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

hi, thanks for your comment. I used Fuji’s specs from their website. If it is variable it is better for us then.
2700 mbps (~344 mb/s) is 6.2k ProRes HQ regardless of frame rate (24-25-30) as far as I know. I’ll check slow-mo rates when I get my camera.

Check out the "Burst" section on this list:
Double ticked and marked "*3" ones are faster (burst longer)

That was an intelligent design by Sony. It uses CFexpress Type-A cards which are almost same size as SD. They used it for their advantage.
