My Skywalker X8 Black - Build Timelapse

  • Hi FPV fans. I have just completed the build of my Skywalker X8 Black. Watching a video of this plane on youtube back in 2013 ( • Skywalker X8 FPV the b... ) I was inspired to get into FPV. Without any knowledge at the time, or anyone around me with the same interest, I decide to go for other planes to learn how to build, fly, LAND! and then fly FPV. Now with 3 years under my belt, having owned an FPV Raptor, TriCopter, RadJet, Skywalker X7, TBS Discovery, DJI S900, and a Skywalker 1680 - I felt it was time to get my dream plane - The Skywalker X8 Black edition. I am decommissioning my X7 and moving all the tried and tested components into this X8, so I am installing it with some confidence of a lot of bench testing and many successful flights. I hope you like this build video, it took me 6 hours to so the assembly and now I am excited to get it in the air!!!!!....

    Interestingly enough. your are using exactly the same motor that I have been using on my last X-8 build up.. but I also find really interesting the fact that you have move the motor farther back... totally contrary to what I have done.. to have all the weight of the plane closer to the CG, my motor is actually well over 12" closer to the center! I'm truly looking forth to see your first flight! !!! Nice video thanks for posting...

    Great Job ant0nsmith!!!!
    Your video has inspired me to go to the next level and fly FPV.
    I started my dream Skywalker X8 build in the summer of 2017.
    My maiden flight will be some time in the summer of 2018 in Kelowna BC Canada. Due to the thick Washington fire smoke, visibility was poor all summer.This is not a project for the beginner, also quality parts can be costly.
    This is hands down my favourite project!!! The possibility's are limitless with this platform.
    I have learned so much from this build and will be posting my equipment build list once flight proven.
    Keep on spinning to the right.
    ;)

    The link for the video that inspired you doesn't seem to work. Can you post that again? And I'm amazed at how efficiently you build :) BTW, you'll love the X8. I have had two of them. Just be careful when you launch it. That prop can be dangerous. I wear a glove, but my hand has never come in contact with the prop fortunately. It's all in how you throw it.

    Hi Ant0n. Great build, man your experience and forward planning is really obvious considering your experience. I have also cut my wings to allow for the control horns to poke out of the top of the wing, makes sense since it is a belly lander. My question to you is this, did you use longer control horns or did you deepen the pocket for the servo? I'm at this point and I'm not quite sure what to do. If you did deepen the servo pocket, did you use some sort of router tool/bit?

    • @ant0nsmith
      @ant0nsmith  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment! No i didnt deepen the any where the servo goes. I just used the longest servo arms that came the the servos. As long as they stick out of the top of the wing a little bit so the control rod has space to move then it will be fine. You really dont need much travel of the servo, as you will get quite a lot of deflection anyway on the elevons. Hope this helps

  • @andrewjamez

    The lack of carbon spars in the outer wings scares me

    • @MajChronic
      @MajChronic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are carbon spars, they just don't go all the way to the end of the wing.
      Please remember, this is a LARGE wing and is designed for long distance and cargo capacity and NOT top speed or agility and as such, doesn't require spars out to the ends of the wing. If you require either of those 2 components in a wing, (waves hand slowly in front of you) this isn't the wing you're looking for.

    Really gorgeous build. I've been considering the X8 for a while but my car has seriously space limitations. Can you please tell me if it's possible to build this such that the wings can be easily removed for transport? I asked the folks over at FPV Model and they said the wings roots should be attached with tape and (ie permanently.) Thanks!

    • @ant0nsmith
      @ant0nsmith  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply. That is a nonsense answer! I transport my X8 all the time by taking the wings off. The new design of wings fasteners that you get makes it simple to take the wings off, while keeping it strong in flight. I have never had a problem with the wings! Hope you still considering the X8. /Anton

    I have so many questions I'd like to ask you. I just ordered up some 3mm or 1/8 inch plywood for the platform for the battery and electronic gear. I have the basic fpv
    (5.8ghz)stuff and card camera. I've been trying to figure out what to use for long distance flight as a dragon link setup. I live in the mountainous/hilly region of he Adirondaks in NY state so 900mhz might be better. I just at this point am not really sure how to proceed. The other thing is that I ask myself if I should laminate the x8 now or wait until I've made cuts where needed for routing wires etc. Currently I am fiber glassing the verticals on the wing tips as others have had issues with them snapping off. Any advice would be really welcome.
