    If you'd fly KLM in 1996, perhaps even in 1997, you could have bought this exact DCC 175 at significant discount price. I don't remember details now, I think they offered just a player too (probably 170), but I was shopping for DCC at that time and to my great surprise the price from KLM's on-board catalogs (they used to offer them on international flights) was definitely lowest from what I could find anywhere else, including lower Manhattan's cheapest warehouse-stores.
    edit/ Well, it still was expensive, but at least they offered it at true duty-free price and applied additional 10% discount for paying with "partnership" credit card (that starts with "Am..." in it's name) which made it cheapest I could find. Cassettes are easy to make and analog cassettes are in production again. Unfortunately the special tape you need for a DCC (essentially chrome video tape) cannot be made anymore because of the pollution it generates. Unless you rip the media you stream to local storage, anything you “buy” from a streaming service only exists as long as the seller hosts it. That why I am now building own HiFi equipment, such as radio tuners and cassette decks. As this is the only way I can get best out of these formats, as every thing now seems to be low end and made at the lowest possible cost. Hi Techmoan! I'm a huge fan and subscriber of your channel for years now, and I enjoy your videos everytime! But to be fair, I believe you spend too much time and energy on the DCC and MiniDisc formats. Both of these lived for just a fraction of time and became quickly obsolete. It is awesome though that through your videos, you introduced them to people who didn't know their existence - such as me. And it was very interesting to learn about those audio fortmats I never thought existed.
    But, even though some new music releases do come on DCC and/or MiniDisc, let's be honest, it can't be considered as a "comeback", like the vinyl records' one for example. Plus, one has to buy the music players for each one of those formats, so it makes it even harded for them to be available to the general public.
    As a long time viewer and subscriber of yours, I would suggest you to focus on other audio formats/gadgets/players/machines etc. It really makes more sense, than spending time, energy and in some intances, money for these obsolete formats. As always though I did enjoy a lot your video, and I'm eager for the next ones. Be well! 😊

      MiniDiscs was more lossy than DCC. Eventually Sony came up with better formats because they kept going and did stuff like using new lasers, whereas Philips threw the towel in the ring in 1996.
      DAT is lossless though.

    • @dolfandon7124
      @dolfandon7124 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't remember DCC was lossy, maybe the fact that it was less lossy coupled with me having a very good cassette deck for that time (Teac R919-X) had me leaning DCC. But no matter how lossy, MiniDisc was the better format. You could easily edit them down to the microsecond level over and over and over again for mix "discs". Also, they were considerably less susceptible to skips than CDs (a big deal of the time). But you could still access any track almost immediately and add text which only a scarce few CDs of the time had, and then required special equipment to use.

    • @JacGoudsmit
      @JacGoudsmit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dolfandon7124 In hindsight, DCC had no chance of being successful against MD, CD-R/RW, hard disks and sold state. I believe there are no parallel universes or timelines where DCC would have existed after 2005 or so if Philips hadn't killed it in 1996. Even if they would have added features like longer tapes (or lower tape speed to record e.g. mp3 at 192kbps) or the ability to record on analog cassettes, the format was basically still-born.
      But in 1988 when Philips started developing it, when everyone was replacing their LP's with CD's and prerecorded cassette sales were on the decline, it totally made sense. Watch the DCC documentary on TH-cam, and also Gijs Wirtz' presentation in 2019 to learn more.

This is even though in the 90's I was working for a company that made digital audio recording equipment, and I actually used to own a DAT recorder, so this must have been one of the most low key product launches ever. I never owned a Minidisc either, but at least I knew they existed. A shame as it does look like a really good format.

    I still have a Sony MZ-RH10 for my MiniDisc needs (albeit it doesn't take power from the wall anymore - or rather, it doesn't charge the battery with this way). I love those old formats a whole lot - they are great and wonderful. There is still so much you can do with some of them and use them for, perhaps, abstract projects. I use MiniDisc as a way to listen to Audiobooks as a voice recording doesn't neccessarily need to be 320kbps - 128 or even just 64 is enough and can allow a Hi-MD to fit a load of stuff. I marvel at these old things, especially if there are still people committed to them!

    When I first heard about DCC as a teenager back in the '90s, I thought it was going to be the next big thing in music and really wanted a player for myself. I was most excited about the idea of blank DCCs for faithful recordings from CD and the radio.
    But there were several factors working against the DCC.
    1) DCC players were outlandishly expensive. They never made it into affordable boom boxes, etc. I guess there was one Walkman-style device, but it too was very pricey. And it was only a player; it wasn't designed to record from a CD player. DCC players were niche, and I certainly couldn't afford one.
    2) CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RW, etc. enabled digital recordings without the hassle of rewinding and fast-forwarding through a cassette to find the track you want.
    3) Car CD players became more widely available. People would record their CDs on regular cassettes to listen to them in the car, but then that became unnecessary.
    4) MP3 made it possible to keep your whole CD collection on your computer, and later, on portable devices like the iPod and other MP3 players. You could even record MP3s onto CDs and put large collections of music on just one disc. I did this so I wouldn't have to change CDs in the car, and I upgraded my car stereo to one that could play MP3 (or WMV in my case since the files were smaller) CDs.
    If DCCs and players had come out 10 years earlier, they would have been hugely successful.

    I have one of those portable dcc machines, bought in Finland cheaply when the electronics shops wanted to get rid of the format. Sadly I don't have the data cable. In recent years I have used it only as a C-cassette player when converting old tapes, it plays them with good quality. As I remember it, using dcc tapes was fiddly, the head must be absolutely clean, and starting a recording is more complex than with an analogue cassette. It must record some kind of lead-in, bit like formatting floppies. I also have a couple of virgin blank tapes. Wonder if the machine and tapes eventually become valuable and finance my retirement on a Caribbean island...
