staff are on penalty rates on weekends usually double rate. 10% covers the extra costs.. i dont mind waiters etc being paid more . they are not high end earners at any rate. if you have a weekend off and want a coffee . the man providing it is working on a weekend. enjoy your coffee.
Don't see weekend surcharge in Sydney as much, but you do see public holiday surcharge, as the have to pay staff double time and a half rate. It probably depends if the business is able to keep more permanent staff or has more casual.
@@RuthFogarty thanks for sharing Ruth 🙏🏼 we’ve definitely seen the public holiday surcharge all over the world as well. The weekend surcharge is totally new to us though!!

Thanks for introducing Byron Bay. Good choice of cafes and shops. Particularly loved the view of Tallow Beach on approach to the lighthouse, and seeing the humpback whales must have been amazing! (Think I would fail if I tried to use a hula hoop 😂) Thanks guys ❤
Thanks Tracy! Glad you enjoyed it. My Auntie used to live just off Tallow Beach 😍 when I first came to Aus that was one of my first stops! The humpbacks are visible up most of the East Coast at this time of year. It’s always special to see them passing though 🐋
@@cjexplores Some places near me are like that but not all places . I live in Liverpool Sydney . It is mainly restaurants that charge and not so much cafe’s .
@@louisaklimentos7583 interesting. I really thought cafes would be totally fine to pay their staff extra on the weekends because they are most likely working harder with all the customers coming in!
Byron has so much great food for such a little town. It has my favorite sashimi from the fish shop, my favorite chicken parmy, my favorite seafood chowder, and my favorite gelato place to boot.
I love this video! Most hospitality in Australia charge a Sunday surcharge now, even cinemas. They do it because it's no longer mandatory for businesses to pay a Sunday rate, therefore a lot of companies use this surcharge / rate so that they can pay their employees more to encourage them to work on weekends but there are a few companies that don't don't pass on the extra money they make on weekends to employees :( I cannot wait to see more SE QLD content.
@@cjexploresNo it’s not true. Penalty rates are still mandatory under the hospitality award. I don’t know why someone would make up otherwise. Attention I assume, but facts matter. www.fairwork.gov.au/pay-and-wages/penalty-rates-allowances-and-other-payments/penalty-rates
Calling it a weekend surcharge is just being honest. Other places may just increase their menu prices but offer a “weekday discount”. It’s the exact same thing one’s trying to hide what they’re doing the other is just being upfront.
Looks like you guys were only in the CBD area? You really would have been better off leaving the car at the hotel and just walked everywhere instead of dealing with parking.

Nice weather and I need to be north !Sur charge is because you have to pay staff more money on the weekends especially Sundays .
True, is it common where you are??

@@Windward535 true, we didn’t have a hotel stay but that would’ve been a great suggestion!
New South Wales is overpriced, especially housing. It has to come down eventually.
