    Both sides knew their advantages and disadvantages. That's why Spartans always tried to catch the Athenians off guard before they hop into their ships. And it is also known that when the people of Athens went to the oracle to get advice they were said to never abandon the wooden walls that protected Athens, meaning the wooden ships. And the Athenian general Periklis always said "We will defend in land and attack at sea". Proud to be Greek from Macedon. We came to play a little later. But that's also the problem with us folks till today. We cannot just stick together. If only the Greek states combined strength and never let loose...

      Finn Bailey Finn Bailey Finn Bailey what's your argument for that?
      They were actually one of the smallest (and arguably the weakest) military forces in Greece, with their army numbering only a thousand, and that was at its peak.
      The only reason they're famous and heard of today is because they stood at thyrmopalye against the Persians, as a last stand to cover the retreat of the majority of the Greek coalition's forces. And you know that whole 300 spartans vs 1 million Persians is a lie, right? Firstly, the spartans weren't the only ones there, holding the Persians back-- no, initially there was around 10,000 Greeks at that pass(only 300 of which were spartans), but since defeat was assured; Athens, and some other minor Greek states fell back to engage in guerrilla warfare later on. The spartans and a bunch of thespians, helots and thebians (numbering a total of around 2000) held their ground to cover the retreat of everyone else.
      So to sum it up: it's a myth that 300 spartans stood alone against 1 million Persians. And Sparta only had 300 fucking soldiers at that pass-- now compared to the total number of the Greek forces, they are (were) considered a MINOR nation. Very minor. Athens and Thespians made up the majority.
      Another thing to note: the Greeks would have lost the war if it were not for the Athenians. Their large navy and army was the only thing that stopped the Persians. I mean c'mon now; they became the leader of the coalition for a reason...

    Factually, the most popular Total War TH-camrs are not necessarily the best ones. However, I personally would LOVE to see a Total War TH-camr's Total War Rome 2 Tournament. No matter the layout I think it would be great to see Pixie, Legend, Heir of Carthage, Jackie Fish, Alex the Rambler, Republic of Play, OfficiallyDevin, and any others I may have forgotten, compete in a Rome 2 tourney. Field battle or siege, single knockout or best of 3 I think that it would make for an absolutely LEGENDARY Total War tournament. One of the best things about all of these Total War TH-camrs, in addition to their skills' is their fantastic commentary. Please make it happen, and if you don't...... please know that I will still love you all nonetheless.

      You're disgusting, To Hades with spartans. Athenians suffered the invasion of Persia, and Sparta didn't wanna help them take back their colonies in Persia after the sacking of Athens 480. So why are you cheering for Sparta? Sure, they helped Athens win the war over Persia, but that's something I wouldn't say, before knowing the whole story.

    Although I’m sure you know this, but yes Sparta has a good military but their true strength was propaganda. That is clearly evident because the stories we still tell of them today and how exaggerated they are yet still believed.

    After Sparta won and expanded their land they couldn't keep it on the long run because they kept their tradition of only the best are to become warriors, the problem with that was that they had more land and less warriors to defend it and when people realized that they revolt

    I think the reason to the one athenian unit which was surrounded didnt die quickly was because almost all of your units which was surrounding the athenians didnt break them because they were exhausted!
    And the athenians were fresh

    • @antred11
      @antred11 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Rome 1 there actually as a game mechanic by which a unit, if completely surrounded would sometimes fight to the death rather than break, so it was a good idea to leave at least a little gap for them through which to run away (you could still mop them up _after_ they broke).

    Sorry I usually go for the technology based factions but Athens was trying to create a mini empire to which Sparta created the Peloponnesian league (which was a defensive treaty) and Athens later on in the war decided to hold spartan prisoners for ransom because Sparta was besieging Athens, to which the Spartans left, but then Athens went and pulled the war crime of killing all the prisoners and Sparta couldn’t besiege the settlement for a few years after this because they already organized the withdraw. (So in other words they did it just to elongate the conflict). In the end Sparta and her allies besieged Athens again and she had to concede this time to which many of the other city states wanted athens to burn to the ground, but the spartan king said it was not the people’s fault but the leaderships. So I’m all Sparta in any battle where the two are going after each other, and yes all of them had slaves back then that sadly was the norm.

  • @SpartanMikey

    I'm surprised no one on the Spartan side tried to go on the far left flank along the coast line once the Athenians fell back to their last stand position. It's narrow but they wouldn't have had a line of site to see anything coming. If you get a couple of units round there you're in their rear and can flank any of their defence points at your leasure.
    It's a trick I use all the time on this map.
