    I served in the Canadian forces and I've never heard this story. Amazing, truly inspiring.

    Thank you for telling the story of these brave men. However, while they were the first black battalion, they weren't the first black unit formed in Canada. That distinction goes to the 'Colored Corps', formed during the War of 1812 also as a construction unit. They built the defenses, roads and battery emplacement. The Colored Corps also built Fort Mississauga in Niagara, a fort that replaced Fort George after being destroyed by the Americans.

    Our Legacy Voices Project is working with Library and Archives Canada and primary sources to create educational programming on No2 and to address misinformation. They did not remove wounded from the battlefield, nor defuse landmines, nor build bridges.

    The construction battalions were frequently under fire, especially at Ypres. The attitude towards black troops made no sense even in 1914-1918. The French Army had lots of African troops and many of their best units were made up of Black troops. In fact, the French were very happy to have black American troops.
