What kind of snakes do you have there? My mom always says that the snakes are more afraid of you than you are of them... I'm not sure I believe her, but I guess they do try to avoid attacking and biting until they feel threatened enough. It's their home after all.
Sadly those debris piles are perfect hiding places for all sorts of little critters that snakes can hunt. Good on you both for being safe and making sure you have the snake its space.

We have water moccasins and copper heads that are poisonous
