Whitetips are very inquisitive, persistent and bold when it comes to checking out possible food sources, and will investigate almost anything they come across, including divers! Interestingly, they are very cautious of hooked baits.
Great video. These sharks are scarry! I swam with 3 of them off Kona and they act different in packs. When they were singles you can get a little closer but you have to be on your toes. I didn't stay in the water long and I didn't stray too far from the boat. They were 3-4 miles off shore and there just looked like they were hungry. Of course my camera was at home that day...
It is believed that whitetips were responsible for the deaths of many men when the steamship Nova Scotia was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine off northern Natal, South Africa in WWII (Bass, D'Aubrey & Kistnasamy, 1973). Of the 900 men on board (of which 750 were Italian prisoners of war) only 192 survived, many probably victims of sharks, in what survivors described as a "feeding frenzy" (Reader's Digest, 1989).
Gorgeous video! Such elegant creatures. Clearly he was just waiting for you to get tired so you could be dinner. Or maybe he's used to crazy photographers!
The Bull Shark's probably attacked more due to it's variability as a predator when it comes to entering fresh water ecosystems. But yes the Oceanic Whitetip is very dangerous, exploitative, and has been implicated in several oceanic disasters such as the Indianapolis, Nova Scotia and the Cape San Juan
I would guess that it's exactly like the dorsal was chewed off; probably by one of its own kind. They drift out in the open ocean where food is scarce and in frenzies they don't dick around.
@DeepAddiction47 The guy you are arguing with ( although purposely being provocative ) is actually right, and you, like all the other simpletons on here, are reacting like a child. His point is that sharks should be protected because they are majestic predators that are worth protecting, not because they are the misunderstood teddy bears that we are constantly told they are these days. Sometimes sharks kill people, mostly they don't. Always they are awesome. That's all there is too it.
if they are so dangerous, and if they are man-eaters, mindless killers, then why didnt they eat or even harm these divers. It is self evident that not all, infact maby not any of them were eaten by a shark. Only five people die a year by sharks, none of which are eaten. In 2007 only 1 person died. Why would the sharks back then start a feeding frenzy if now they are docile?
it is not very easy to see, but just go have a look: the cameramen on this video dont have easy jobs: they have to 'out'manoeuvre the sharks quick(which is impossible after a time, again) .It is NOT the actual attack, plus the divers are fit enough at the moment and have protective gear(everything which is outside of your skin, plus the relatively large camera, paddles, goggles.... First you start feeling chilly in the water you may choose swimming for a warm-up, have youn ever swum?

good morning ! I love sharks so probably you ve completely misunderstood me, it is not that I blame them for anything, rather I was stating information on thisparicular species of sharks which is probably one of the least known of all. And do not be so clever my boy: they will harm you bad.More closely, they WILL tear your flesh off the bone like razor. Trust me on this it is only a matter of hours and even good swimmers have no escape.Or did you think you can just walk away from the place?
@DeepAddiction47 Sure, flesh is never consumed, except in all 5 of the attacks in the Red Sea, except for Lloyd Skinner being totally consumed...no reason arguing with a fanatic. Find me one calendar year when humans weren't eaten alive by sharks. Need some help? TH-cam search "shark takes woman's leg". Doh! There goes your argument.
@mluptak Gee, maybe you are the one who needs to study again. Oceanic Whitetips are known maneaters and shark week simply recounts actual instances of predation. The attacks in the Red Sea are nothing compared to what they did after the USS Indianapolis sank. I love sharks, think they are beautiful but LOVE studying about shark attacks. Here's a tip. If you were stranded in the open ocean and an OW came along...it would eat you because that is its ecological niche. It is nature, that's all.
there about the same when it comes to how dangerous, these sharks are man eaters and have killed alot of ppl who are ship wrecked;they stay out far in the ocean.
Let me ask you a question. What makes me speaking the truth about sharks (e.g., man-eaters) makes you so chapped? Are you a dive tour operator that doesn't want anyone to see their cash cow as someting other than a "misunderstood", "curious" creature "we are only beginning to understand"? I've been diving with White sharks in G. Island, been in Hawaiian waters for over 20 years and been to 6 continents. I don't need to "consult a marine biologist" to determine sharks see H.sapiens as prey. Duh.
@DeepAddiction47 My question is simple: why is it even necessary? Sharks are beautiful and mysterious and fascinating either way. Why prate on and on about them attacking people by "mistake" in the light of the known science that proves they arguably have the most finely tuned faculties of all predators? It can't be both, "dick". Keep trying, bro, but like flying the flag upside down, you just wish for a reality that doesn't exist. If you were stranded in the open ocean or not in the US.
Nice camera work, I love the Big Island! And the oceanics!
ninja shark - 'hmm, I'll just take a bit of my fin off and... sneaky sneaky'

They say this is the shark probably most responsible for all the shark attacks on the crew of the USS Indianapolis
Gorgeous video! Such elegant creatures. Clearly he was just waiting for you to get tired so you could be dinner. Or maybe he's used to crazy photographers!
Absolutely amazing.....wow....great video....your friend ..CHRIS THE HOBBY GUY
I would give anything to have been there!!!
world class camera work - nicely done!

Amazing footage
What happened to the shark? It's like the dorsal fin was ripped or Chewed off!

@PrncssMagna I Agree with you PrncssMagna i think thats the most interesting aspect of this footage,
@DeepAddiction47
