I live in LA, and the non-native palm trees are kinda an issue. We grow them incorrectly by planting them as a single when they are supposed to grow in clusters for more root support. AND those 100 yo palm trees are now as tall as a 15-20 story building and not very sturdy.

Just to throw this in. My grandfather became a real estate mogul in L.A./Glendale during the early 1940s and up till the 1970s. I heard this story not only from my grandfather but my dad as well.
My grandfather at that time was buying up lots of property and building several 1,000 unit apartments right within the Glendale. He said he would clear the property and that also meant getting rid of palm trees that would be in the way.
Then, city officials started coming around and telling my grandfather that there were city ordinances that palm trees were not to be cut down without.... I think either permits or permission I do not remember at this point. My grandfather told these people that the prperty were his ad can do as he wished with it. - Now, I know this to be true, my grandfather by this time had 2 body guards and he would instruct these 2 guys to escort the city officials off the property. - I had no idea that back in those days that there were already city ordinances, especially for trees

Love the stunning beauty of greenery in Singapore. I wish our local city council would allow that! I’d like to know more about the rivers we’ve strangled into “submission”. Especially where we’ve stopped the natural flow of the CO river into Mexico. I’m sure it can’t be the only example of rivers being completely cut off from original flow via er, piracy to screw over communities

While it is true that the super-tall-and-skinny palm trees all around Los Angeles are not native, there is actually a species of palm tree indigenous to the region: the California fan palm. Washingtonia filifera, - called the desert fan palm, California fan palm, or California palm - is a flowering plant in the palm family Arecaceae, native to the far southwestern United States and Baja California, Mexico. Growing to 20 meters tall, it is much broader than the skinny Washingtonia robusta - or Mexican fan palms - seen on postcards of iconic LA streets, growing up to 6 meters wide. An old-growth stand of California fan palms is what gave Palm Springs its name and there were indeed palm trees in the LA area before settlers and developers planted non-native species. This is the first time I've seen Weird History get something wrong, I'm surprised!

Orlando, Florida has the strangest founding story around. The story is during the Seminole Indian war a soldier named Orlando reeves was killed on the exact spot where the sign bearing his name is now and in honor of that the commander named the city Orlando. Unfortunately this isn’t exactly true as the historical records don’t have an Orlando reeves anywhere. The other story was the city was called something else but was named Orlando in honor of a soldier though this is false also as there is no record of an Orlando anywhere. We’re not sure where the name came from actually but it’s local legend about Orlando reeves and his passing on the shores of modern lake Eola is the accepted story.
