- After the Patriots' 2024 schedule was released on Wednesday, Phil Perry and Marc Bertrand join Early Edition and discuss which week would be best for Drake Maye to get the start for the New England Patriots.
He should start when the coaching staff feel he is ready. Not when a bunch of reporters need a storyline.
While I am not sure he ever will be ready, I think you start Maye when he's ready. If it's week one, week 12, or week 15 of 2025, start him when he is ready.
They're just making conversation. The kid is a long way off from being anything like ready.
There should be no rush, we’re not making the playoffs. Let these young guys develop and get another top 5-10 pick, get some more talent and next year see what he’s got
I agree with Phil. If he’s ready and you can protect him, then let him play. Simple!
I think the OL question is far more important than anything else.
There are countless number of QB's drafted in the top 5 in the NFL that crashed and burned. Many of them because the reason a team drafted in the top 5 is that they were horrible the previous season(s).
One of the typical faults of those teams is that their OL was sub par. So, you put a young QB out there who get's hammered and loses his confidence, get's happy feet, etc.
Heck, that was part of the problem with Mac Jones failing. His OL was horrible and he got hit so many times he thought there was pressure that wasn't really there and rushed throws that he didn't have to.
So until the OL shows that it can protect any QB, he shouldn't start.
Period.
Week one, let him rip it 🔥
Week 1. Declare him QB1 . ralley behind him for the whole season. No double checks. If he is health he starts. No shuffle. No BS.

7 of their losses were one score games, all they needed was an offense that could produce, and the Pats drafted with that in mind. They aren’t going to suck as badly as youre acting.

Im not even a patroits fan but hes not ready he is only 21 and played 2 seasons in college their is no need to rush that young man play brisett and let him learn for a year maybe play him the last couple weeks of the season and have him ready to roll next year!

If they throw him in late in the season and they start winning the fans are going to be upset because they'll start thinking maybe they should've started him in the beginning instead of losing majority of their games with brisset if that does happen

Then you need to consider whether it's worth starting a young quarterback, whether you can properly protect him, so you don't cut his career short.

I THINK JACOBY BRISSET AND ZAPPE PLAY THIS YEAR. AND DRAKE MAYE AND JOE MILTON SIT IN BENCH WATCH AND LEARN… BUT THEY CAN PLAY IN 4TH PERIOD ONLY. BECAUSE THEY STILL DEVELOPED. DRAKE MAYE CAN START NEXTYEAR FOR SURE.
