- The poet Iacovos Kambanellis was a prisoner in Mauthausen during World War II. At the beginning of the sixties, he wrote his memories of this time under the title of "Mauthausen". In 1965, he also wrote four poems on the subject and he gave Mikis the opportunity to set them to music. Mikis did this with much pleasure, firstly because he liked the poetry of the texts, and secondly because he was locked up during the Nazi occupation in Italian and German prisons, but mainly because this composition gives us the chance to remind the younger generation of history, that history that must never be forgotten.
Picture: Liberated prisoners in the Mauthausen concentration camp near Linz, Austria, give rousing welcome to Cavalrymen of the 11th Armored Division. The banner across the wall was made by Spanish Loyalist prisoners. It says "The Spanish Antifascists greet the Liberating Forces". The text is written in English and Russian as well. 6 may 1945

Ich wollte vorhin auf TH-cam Nachrichten antworten' es gibt immer welche doofe " große" Seiten die behaupten dass Mikis zufälligerweise dank dem Film Zormpas so nebenbei berühmt geworden ist. Dabei vergessen die, dass Mikis der Ursprung ist und nicht das Ergebnis. Diese Seiten lassen sich schwer wiederfinden. Wie auch immer: Mikis Theodorakis. = ich verneige mich! R I P

My uncle was involved in the liberation of Mauthausen. I have an armband he kept from a German officer he captured.

Mikis was a “giant” in his field. Influenced and got the respect from countless musicians. Even the Beatles. And I am convinced Mikis pioneered a “heavy metal” sound that influenced Led Zeppelin 🙂

Ja nun ist mikis theodorakis 95 geworden. Was können wir diesem großen mann und unterschätztem Komponisten wünschen? Das seine Musik mehr gespielt und besprochen wird? Seine mauthausen Kantate geht mir jedes mal ans Herz, wenn ich sie höre. Ich war 1972 oder 71 oder 70 in mauthausen und habe diese schreckliche Treppe angeschaut. Nie wieder vergessen. ..
Mein österreichischer mann wollte das nicht sehen. ..dazumal wollten die meisten Menschen in oesterreich diese Seite der Geschichte nicht wahrnehmen. ..

I heard this song few years ago...it got destroyed by an old women choir on the 4rt of may in holland when we remember the ones who died in the war....
The old ladys totaly wrecked the song up...Im glad that i knew this would sound verry neautifull when yrained vocols had sung this song...im glad i found it. Now im.gonna search for more versions...guy version aint that pretry next to woman vocals.
