I’m impressed. You even have four minutes. At my Viking events I barely pull out the camera for anything at all. For one it feels a little awkward to show off modern technology, and to. I tends to focus on the moment and forget the Pictures I can show to others afterwards
I feel you on filming in public (with and without friends). Just enjoying the moment is very understandable. The event looks lovely, especially with all the amazing craftspeople! I don't know wether we have the same around here, but I'm fond of the Festival Mediaval in Bavaria. More focus on entertainment than history but there are still a couple craftspeople (potters and glas blowers for example) and there is a lovely relaxed mood altogether. Sadly no one actually demonstrating spinning, weaving or dyeing, just merchants selling fabric, wool and pelts and the like.
ah, I couldn't make it this year, but I love Borre Viking Market, ever since the fateful summer day I just happened to stumble into it as a clueless 18-year-old. I set out to drive nowhere in particular one uneventful morning, 2 hours later I found myself tablet weaving in Viking Age tent at Borre. I had never seen this type of weaving before, and the lady doing it kindly let me try (it was a simple repeating pattern). This encounter set me on the path of textile nerd-ery and now I am an avid weaver/braider/embroiderer.
Ah, yes. The gateway crafters. Many so underestimate their impact but they can be such a treasure! Glad you found a place for nerdery, crafts, and enthusiasm!
This is so beautiful, even those couple of shots. For us that have wish but not have means this is a soothing moment. To just watch and imagine to be part of it. One day, may we meet. Thanks for the video 👌🏼❤️
Sitting here melting in our "30ºC and sunny" July weather, while watching your group wearing layers of wool and seeing the dog's breath when he yawns makes one really appreciate the differences in what "summer" means in other regions of the world. 🥵🥶😆
What lovely footage! Amazing handcrafts, gear, decorations...! I am a Viking reenactor myself. However, there are only very few purely early medieval markets where I live (northwest Germany), so I have a lot of friends and aquaintances who do high or late medieval reenactment - or even 18th century Scotland! I love making things myself - sewing, needlebinding, leather works, wood carving, tablet weaving, embroidery... Just now I am working on a leather belt pouch 😀
@@katecapek3116 No, I don't because there are hundreds of tutorials online by people who are much more talented than me. However, on markets I show people how the different crafts work and also teach them if they want to learn.
As an reenactor myself, I can totally agree with you. It is nice to meet with friends, who you only see on Medieval/Viking market’s once or twice a year. 😊
This was so lovely, thanks for bringing us along ❤️ I just saw Shannon's video on English piecing and my first thought was "I bet Kristine would love this! I wonder if she'd be into doing a video with it" and then poof! There you were with Shannon! I'm thrilled to see my favorite creators hanging out ❤
Sadly, no. We do have an agricultural fair that has been done almost every September for more than 150 years. We enjoy it immensely and there are displays and venders for handmade/homemade crafts--quilts, knits, etc.-- and edibles--mostly preserves and locally produced wine. I was very fortunate to be involved in the production of the 150th anniversary book (I'm a graphic designer/desktop publishing expert, retired now), full of old photos and stories of the past.
That looks amazing! I'll be going to castlefest again this year, which at it's core is a music festival, but it's so much more, and while it has quite a variety of nerds, history nerds are definitely included.
I have middle age market rather near, and then the one at Hämeenlinna (medieval castle) is famous here. But nothing really older than that except at Åland, I think. And I don't think they have the option to camp at the market place, unfortunately...
September 14-15, 2024. Den Oever Viking Days. Den Oever, Netherlands. I went there both days as a visitor (in appropriate dress) last year since it's not that far away. Weather permitting I plan to go again this year.
I used to work at a Renfaire in Tuxedo NY, it even had dedicated buildings. In the US these are more like fantasy festivals than historically accurate. But still there are blacksmiths and other traditional craftspeople. But our camps were sadly modern and behind walls away from the public..more like a Mad Max set then this lovely footage! (What you are doing is probs more like SCA stateside, which is more of a private group)
There's a viking center fairly close to me called Värmlands Vikingacenter. Depending on where in Norway you live, it might not be that far! They have a yearly market that usually happens in late July, the next one is in 2 weeks I think. I've been meaning to go for years, but have never gotten around to it. Being disabled and not having a car makes getting to remote places a bit difficult. 😅
I can totally understand that being a challenge! Accessible markets are an ever-ongoing discussion and challenge. I hope you manage to attend in some capacity that is engaging and safe for you. ❤
In the US there is Pennsic war, two weeks and 10,000 plus people get together at the end of July and beginning of August. I only went once just before the pandemic and is was the most magical event i've ever been to. I never got to go to the war during the second week, I spent my entire time going to classes, every day and all day. There was so much to do there. I'm not currently involved with the SCA now, as with any organization, sometimes friendships don't work out. But I learned a lot of history and loved making my own clothes.
My mom is a Legend at Pennsic. She has been to ALL 50 odd of them. Rain, heat, snow, long distances, nothing has ever stopped her. And it is a truly massive event. The classes alone are impressive!
@@ecummins8650 I had heard about it years ago and it really is the most amazing event. Reading about, watching videos about it, nothing prepares you for it. Two weeks of dressing up and playing. We're living in wonderful times. And the weather changes throughout the day are insane. I thought I would be going to the war, but I spent all my time at the classes. Hopefully I will go back again. Its very rare to meet someone who has been to all of them but there are a few here and there. I loved listening to old timers telling stories by the fire of Pennsics of long ago.
There are some SCA events and Ren Faires where I live in the USA, but very little reenactment of the type there is so much of in Europe. I'm quite jealous and dream of someday visiting some of the northern European events. There is one very small group in my area I'm just starting to connect with, and I'm very excited about it :)
I was at the Haithabu Summer Markt in Northern Germany last week, and some craftspersons I now call friends (and met there again this year) were at Borre before that as well! And I completely agree, experiencing such markets as a reenactor is truly unique.
Borre is truly one of the best markets in Europe, lovely organiers, wonderful area and the ambiance and comraderie is exceptional. I was so sad to miss it this year due to health reasons.
as one of the vikings who travel to markets during the summer i whole hardheartedly agree with this! its such an amazing hobby and i love my friends i get to see and the knowledge i get to learn and share! and yes I'm also impressed that you have so much to show people! i forget to take pictures and videos all the time!

It can be s very difficult balance between wanting to experience the event and documenting a tiny bit, for sure!

Nothing like that here at all but those belts oh my I want a better look
